Personality
Himeko is attentive to the younger crew’s wellbeing. After the Jarilo-VI expedition, she encourages March 7th, Stelle, and Dan Heng to rest and enjoy the station’s feast while she and Welt check on Jiang Yao. She also warns Stelle against overeating 5.
Her hospitality extends beyond a person’s usefulness. When inviting Jiang Yao aboard, she acknowledges the crew’s attachment to his cooking but explicitly assures him that he would be welcome without it. She later refuses to demand explanations about his connections to the Stellaron Hunters, treating a companion’s past as something they may share voluntarily 15 26.
Usually elegant and dependable, Himeko loses some of her composure around Jiang Yao’s food. She becomes absorbed enough in breakfast to miss messages and calls, then reacts awkwardly when the younger crew finds her. Coffee is a more sensitive subject: their rejection embarrasses her, but she remains determined to improve even after discovering how difficult Jiang Yao’s methods are 10 12 13 19 27.

Coffee Brewing
Himeko is a dedicated coffee enthusiast with practiced movements, high-quality beans, and comprehensive equipment. Her enthusiasm does not translate into coffee the other passengers enjoy 20 22.
- Flavor: Her coffee is bitter, spicy, and acrid. Himeko enjoys its distinctive taste and stimulating effect, but the rest of the crew avoids it 19 20 22.
- Notorious reputation: Its smell alone makes Pom-Pom shudder. Welt recalls pain in his esophagus after forcing down a cup 19 20.
- Effect on Jiang Yao: Even the Aeon of Voracity struggles to stomach it, finishing his cup through pride and respect for food rather than enjoyment 22.
- Learning difficulty: Jiang Yao’s instruction requires judging the grounds by sight and aroma, then adjusting temperature, water quantity, and pouring technique. Himeko cannot reproduce his results merely by following the written steps 27 35.
Equipment / Items
- Coffee-making equipment — A setup so comprehensive that Jiang Yao cannot find fault with it 22.
- Premium coffee beans — Uses high-quality beans, including Geisha beans she purchased herself 22 24.
- Jiang Yao’s written brewing instructions — Follows them during later practice, without achieving comparable coffee 35.
Relationships
- Jiang Yao — Rescued traveler, later crewmate and coffee instructor. Himeko formally invites him aboard, protects him during Kafka’s scrutiny, and seeks his help with brewing. The crew interprets his willingness to drink her coffee as romantic interest, but the narration attributes his endurance to respect for food and personal pride 15 20 21 22 25 27.
- Welt — Fellow senior crewmate and planning partner. They check on Jiang Yao together, share bewilderment over their changed palates, and consult Pom-Pom about the Express’s itinerary 5 7 8 17.
- March 7th — Younger crewmate whom Himeko encourages to rest after Jarilo-VI. March later discovers her secret breakfast with Welt and joins the gossip surrounding Jiang Yao’s coffee tasting 5 13 21.
- Stelle — Younger crewmate whose overeating Himeko cautions against. Stelle later regrets ignoring that warning and originates the theory that Jiang Yao has a crush on Himeko 5 14 20.
- Dan Heng — Crewmate whose wellbeing Himeko watches closely; she is particularly pleased to see him relaxed after Jiang Yao’s coffee. He notices her unusually furtive trip to the dining car 19 25.
- Pom-Pom — Conductor and travel-planning partner. Remains aboard with Himeko during the Luofu visit and shares the crew’s aversion to her coffee 17 20 35.
- Asta — Station contact and ingredient-supply collaborator. Alerts Himeko when Jiang Yao awakens and later coordinates deliveries with her 3 35.
- Kafka — Stellaron Hunter whose request Himeko handles cautiously. Himeko challenges her scrutiny of Jiang Yao before hearing her warning about the Luofu 25 26.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Herta Space Station: Rescue and Recruitment
After the Express finds Jiang Yao unconscious in space, the crew takes him to Herta Space Station for treatment. Himeko participates in the discussion with Herta and later leaves the reception meal with Welt when Asta reports that he has awakened 1 5.
Jiang Yao’s egg fried rice overturns Himeko’s initial skepticism. Although made from ordinary protein rice and chicken eggs, it leaves her unable to enjoy the station’s lavish feast as before. March’s question about whether Jiang Yao will join them prompts Himeko and Welt to recognize the opportunity to recruit him 6 7 8.
The following morning, Himeko and Welt become so absorbed in his soup dumplings that they fail to answer the younger crew’s calls. Once everyone has gathered, Himeko offers Jiang Yao help reaching a destination of his choice—or a place among the Nameless. He accepts her invitation 10 11 12 13 15.
Aboard the Express: Coffee Lessons and Gossip
Himeko approaches Jiang Yao hoping to improve her coffee. His willingness to taste it delights her, while the other passengers flee when offered cups of their own. Stelle interprets his enthusiasm as a possible crush, drawing the crew into secretly watching the tasting 18 19 20 21.
Jiang Yao finishes the coffee despite obvious agony, then brews Geisha coffee himself. Himeko initially believes she can copy his method, but the finished drink makes her recognize the shortcomings of her own. She savors it so completely that her cup is empty before she notices the others gathering for their shares 22 23 24.
Xianzhou Luofu: Leadership and Supply Support
When Kafka requests a course change, Himeko takes charge of the discussion and protects Jiang Yao from her probing interest. After Kafka leaves, she respects his privacy while asking for his judgment on the crisis. The ensuing vote supports visiting the Luofu 25 26.
Himeko remains aboard while the advance party checks conditions on the Luofu. During the wait, Jiang Yao gives her detailed brewing lessons and encourages further practice. Her later attempts still fall short, despite his written instructions 27 35.
While coordinating Asta’s ingredient shipments, Himeko briefly questions whether the unusual supplies are edible, then reaffirms her trust in Jiang Yao’s skill. Missing his cooking, she messages him to ask for takeout for herself and Pom-Pom 35.
