Background / History
Emei’s foundations were accumulated over more than a thousand years and three generations. The Three Elders gathered resources and established connections; Elder Longbrow developed those arrangements; Qi Shouming’s generation inherited the task of formally opening the sect. Its reserves included treasures, merit, favors, and disciples cultivated through repeated reincarnations 74 188.
Master Lianshan’s contribution included a vow to turn heterodox schools and evil cults toward righteousness. He entered an unorthodox school and became its leader, but died on Moon Island after demons descended during his attainment of the Dao. His surviving treasures remained accessible only to those capable of resisting earth’s pole true fire 74.
The mansion-opening ceremony marks Emei’s formal establishment rather than the beginning of its preparatory lineage. Qi Shouming is therefore counted as its first-generation leader, Li Yingqiong as its second, and Shangguan Hong as its third. By the final evacuation, barely a hundred years have passed since that opening 389 811.
Emei’s influence rests on more than combat strength. Its strongest elders uphold its military reputation, while generations of goodwill, assistance, and alliances provide its broader advantage. Shi Feiyang’s interventions disrupt many arrangements that would otherwise have brought treasures and independent immortals into Emei’s orbit 271 389.
Organization
Leadership
| Leader | Position and tenure |
|---|---|
| Qi Shouming / Perfected Miaoyi | First-generation leader. After losing his body, remains as a Yang Spirit, transfers leadership to Li Yingqiong, and serves as Grand Elder 389 563 573. |
| Li Yingqiong | Second-generation leader. Receives leadership and the Tusita True Edict from Qi Shouming; leads Emei’s anti-cult operations and refuses submission to Divine Lord Giant Wood 573 600 802. |
| Shangguan Hong | Third-generation leader. Remains in the mortal world to preserve the lineage when the other leaders ascend 389 811. |
Senior Figures
- Three Immortals of the Eastern Sea — Xuanzhenzi, Ascetic Monk, and Qi Shouming are the most formidable members of their generation 271.
- Two Elders of Mount Song — Zhu Mei and Bai Guyi participate in Emei’s major councils and defenses. Zhu Mei’s apprenticeship under Shuijingzi makes him “half an Emei disciple,” despite his Green City connections 271.
- Xun Lanyin / Lady Miaoyi — Qi Shouming’s wife and a major administrator, teacher, and negotiator. She replaces the secluded Ascetic Monk in the sect’s active core during the Illusory Wave Pool campaign 389 423 424.
- Master Canxia and Dragon-Slaying Abbess Shen Xiu — Cultivate both Buddhist and Daoist paths after studying under Elder Longbrow 271.
- Other senior cultivators — Include Li Yuanhua, Tong Yuanqi, Xu Yuantong, Wu Yuanzhi, Master Baiyun, Master Yuanyuan, and Zen Master Yuanjue 271.
Disciples and Discipline
- Disciples normally must pass the mountain’s restriction trials before traveling to accumulate outward merit. During the sealed-mountain period, passing those trials does not grant permission to leave 423.
- Senior members assist juniors with sword refinement. Lei Qu’e, despite only three or four years in the sect, receives a flying sword capable of overcoming Red Snake’s much older cultivation 22.
- Shentu Hong and Ruan Zheng are expelled for eighty-one years after leading disciples who mistakenly kill an overseas wandering immortal. Their punishment requires three successive reincarnations before readmission 150.
- Before the planned battle with Deng Yin, Qi Shouming distributes younger disciples between those who will remain and those sent away to preserve the sect’s future 430.
Lower Court
- Purpose: A martial-world branch intended to train ordinary recruits and provide a route into immortal cultivation 437 438.
- Initial intake: Eighty-nine selected recruits from the group abandoned by Xiaoyue’s faction 438.
- First administrator: Shi Feiyang under Yue Yun’s identity, with Leng Yun handling records and receiving foundation-establishment instruction 437 438.
- Curriculum: Internal cultivation, swordplay, movement, concealed weapons, and remote sword control. Some techniques counter Wutai; others allow Emei and Wutai practitioners to cooperate 438.
- Named manuals: Include Golden Summit Cotton Palm, Extinction Sword, Lianshan Returning Origin Qi, Lesser Purity Divine Sword, Myriad Forms of Jade Radiance, and Dragon-Sparrow Twin Rings 439.
Xiaoyue’s Rival Emei
- Xiaoyue establishes a competing sect on Emei Mountain at Deng Yin’s direction, following a plan secretly proposed by Shi Feiyang. Public recruitment and visible miracles are intended to displace the hidden orthodox sect’s claim to legitimacy 429.
- Its Buddhist branch is taught by Zhu Hong, with Venerable Golden Light supervising martial training; Lu Qing leads the Daoist branch. Their initial followings exceed two hundred and five hundred disciples respectively 430.
- The faction builds halls and training grounds outside orthodox Emei’s entrances, turning the mountain’s public visibility into a challenge to Qi Shouming’s authority 430.
- After Deng Yin’s defeat, Xiaoyue, Zhu Hong, and Lu Qing leave. Orthodox Emei offers their remaining recruits the choice of departure, continued allegiance to Xiaoyue, or admission to its lower court 437.
Cultivation & Abilities
Nine Heavens Profound Scripture
- Emei’s directly inherited immortal teaching; transmission to outsiders is forbidden, even for the estranged Xiaoyue 320.
- Provides powerful spells, resistance to demonic interference, and a cultivation path described as “both steady and swift” 339 531.
- Correct orthodox cultivation is described as allowing ascension and treasure refinement without heavenly tribulations 339 613.
- Temperament remains important: Ling Yunfeng makes little progress in Emei’s orthodox methods despite their quality, while advancing more readily through unorthodox teachings 537.
Lesser Purity Secret Manual
- Studied by direct-line disciples upon entering the sect, alongside the Nine Heavens Profound Scripture 315.
- Contains spells progressing from elementary to profound across a broad range of applications 315.
- Supplies a common foundation from which disciples develop specialized and innovative techniques 315.
- Its spells also support public demonstrations, including the cloud-and-light manifestation used to establish the lower court’s authority 437.
Swordsmanship
- Described as unrivaled under heaven when Lei Qu’e confronts Red Snake; refined weapons and orthodox technique can compensate for a junior’s comparatively shallow cultivation 22.
- Supreme Purity Mystic Gate Formless Sword Qi uses essence as its body, vital energy as its edge, and the primordial spirit as its spirit. Complete mastery permits gathering into form and dispersing into qi 315.
- That highest sword art requires a nascent soul close to pure yang and exceptional cultivation of heart and nature 315.
- Invisible Sword Escape allows Xuanzhenzi to infiltrate the Illusory Wave Pool and strike Xuanyuan’s disciples while avoiding an unsafe direct confrontation 389.
- Purple-Green Unity, wielded by Li Yingqiong and Zhou Qingyun, forces the Heavenly Demon Immortal-Slaying Sword to withdraw rather than meet them directly 561.
Two-Polarity Dust-Mote Formation
- Derived through study of Jade Green Peak and anchored by the Grand Purity divine talisman; its spatial transformations can evolve worlds within the formation 350 423 427.
- Ordinarily concealed. Probing it with a primordial spirit triggers a response and alerts Emei before an uninformed intruder can locate it 424.
- Uses changing configurations and gates—including Life, Death, Gloom, Extinction, Bright, and Illusion—to trap and counter intruders 427.
- Can imprison powerful enemies for refinement by immortal fire and divine thunder. A portable, simplified version uses the Two Modes and Six Harmonies Banner Gate and Six Precious Pearls 562 718.
- Limits: Shi Feiyang escapes by disrupting its space-time transformations with the Haotian Mirror. Giant Wood bypasses the problem of penetrating it by attacking the mountain’s physical connection to the earth 464 802.
Divination and Spiritual Defense
- Emei ranks among the world’s foremost schools at calculating heavenly secrets, using divination for searches, strategy, and anticipated tribulations 266 733.
- Divination is not infallible: Shi Feiyang manipulates heavenly signs and the elders’ assumptions to conceal his infiltration 428.
- Strong, pure-yang minds repel Dongxuan’s curses, causing them to rebound upon her Golden Silkworm Gu 602.
- Spiritual strength does not eliminate every vulnerability. The Demon Sword exploits Wan Zhen’s resentment and Golden Cicada’s buried family grievances 563.
Headquarters & Locations
| Location | Function |
|---|---|
| Emei Mountain | Main sanctuary and seat of the lineage. Restored to Sichuan after the Blood Lake rescue, but left behind during evacuation because its tainted qi would contaminate Shi Feiyang’s sanctuary 810 811. |
| Five Palaces of Primordial Origin | Five extensive architectural complexes containing immortal residences, restrictions, and illusion-filled spaces 423. |
| Central Primordial Immortal Mansion | Reception venue and residence area; Shi Feiyang receives a cave abode here while impersonating Yue Yun 423 424. |
| Thirteen Left Origin Restrictions / Right Origin Fire Abode | Trial grounds controlling disciples’ eligibility to leave the mountain 423. |
| Flying Thunder Cave | Entrance used to admit guests while the main mountain entrance is sealed 423. |
| Jade Green Peak | Heavenly Palace Treasure, treasury, and central source of the sect’s defensive formation 423 810. |
| Golden Summit / Jade Emperor Temple | Site of the lower court established under Yue Yun’s identity 437 439. |
| Turtle-Fishing Rock, Eastern Sea | Cultivation and sword-refining base of the Three Immortals and their close disciples 150 320. |
Treasures & Weapons
- Jade Green Peak / Nine-Heaven Jade Green Peak — Houses treasures gathered by Elder Longbrow over a thousand years. Its time, space, and divination distortions make close investigation dangerous; Qi Shouming eventually gives it to Shi Feiyang 423 424 811.
- Imperial Mansion Heavenly Script Tusita True Edict — Heavenly recognition of Emei’s lineage and expected leadership. Taken early from Jade Green Peak, passed to Li Yingqiong, and later reported destroyed after the battle with Deng Yin 389 573 719 811.
- Innate One-Qi Grand Purity Divine Talisman — Associated with the formation’s core; protects Canxia from the apparent Blood Shadow attack engineered by Shi Feiyang 427 428.
- Purple and Azure Swords — Signature weapons of Li Yingqiong and Zhou Qingyun. Their combined power checks the Demon Sword; both are transferred to Shi Feiyang during the final evacuation 561 811.
- Seven Cultivation Swords — Destroy evil Gu and their spirits. The complete set is entrusted to Golden Cicada before Emei divides its forces against Chiyou 602 675.
- Jade Casket and Golden Saber — Left by Elder Longbrow to punish a traitor and strengthened by Emei’s formation. The saber repeatedly divides Deng Yin’s body and also enables consultation with Longbrow across realms 717 719 720.
- Jade Lotus Pod — A powerful demon-subduing treasure stored in Jade Green Peak. Shi Feiyang obtains it during his infiltration, along with the first volume of the Blood God Scripture 423 437 465.
- Illusory Wave Pool treasures — Several hundred mid-grade treasures supplement Emei’s inherited high-grade arsenal 560.
Relationships
- Shi Feiyang — Enemy, infiltrator, uneasy ally, and eventual protector. Their feud begins with Zhuge Jingwo’s attempt to forcibly harvest the Millennium Purple River Grass. Shi later rescues the sect and accepts responsibility for its remaining disciples 718 810 811.
- Wutai Sect / Grandmaster Taiyi Hunyuan — Mortal rivals committed to three sword duels. Hunyuan’s hatred makes Emei his principal target, and his Demon Sword causes catastrophic losses 258 449 561 563.
- Deng Yin / Blood God Son — Former member and persistent enemy sworn to annihilate Elder Longbrow’s mortal-world lineage. His threats repeatedly force Emei into defensive seclusion 411 536 717.
- Chan Master Xiaoyue — Estranged former disciple who attempts to replace orthodox Emei with a publicly recruited rival sect 316 429 437.
- Green City Sect — Closely connected through inherited favors and shared predecessors, but not politically uniform. Zhu Mei supports Emei, while Jiang Shu’s bond with Shi Feiyang complicates cooperation; Tian Canzi unsuccessfully attempts mediation 228 271.
- Li Jingxu — Protector and mediator. Defends Emei during the Demon Sword crisis and urges its leaders to cooperate with Shi Feiyang rather than perpetuate sectarian grievances 562 573.
- Chan Master Bai Mei — Senior Buddhist adviser. Refuses to join an unsafe assault on Shi Feiyang and redirects Emei toward more urgent threats 287 288.
- Xiao Shijiu and Luo Ziyan — Long-standing friends dating from Elder Longbrow’s era. Xiao Shijiu secures compensation and protection for Lin Su’e after her assistance to Emei creates a feud 423.
- Divine Lord Giant Wood — Initially receives Emei’s agreement to oppose Deng Yin, but becomes its attacker after demanding submission and a change of religious allegiance 791 802.
- Haotian Shangdi — Divine authority recognizing the lineage. His imperial protection, enforced by Zhao Gongming and heavenly troops, safeguards Emei’s collective ascent 811.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Escalation of the Shi Feiyang Feud
- Elder Longbrow’s arrangements already link independent cultivators to Emei: Old Lady Red Flower guards herbs intended for future disciples and gradually recognizes the possible benefit of that connection 41.
- Yuanjue and Stubborn Stone attempt to seize medicinal spirits as leverage against Shi Feiyang. Their subsequent deaths transform an unresolved feud into a sect-wide demand for vengeance 266 271.
- Qi Shouming postpones retaliation because an attack could bind Shi firmly to Wutai and Mount Hua. Tian Canzi abandons mediation, returns the borrowed Iron Umbrella, and ascends 271.
Demon-Sword Coalition and Formal Opening
- Qi Shouming suspends his own sword-making and invites twenty-six powerful cultivators to oppose the demonic sword-forging project 322.
- Emei supplies the coalition’s main strength, but the Star Lodge Sea expedition ends with grievous casualties 334 360 389.
- The sect captures the Illusory Wave Pool and holds a reduced mansion-opening ceremony after losing roughly half its elders. Deng Yin’s subsequent threat prompts the recall of branch disciples and the sealing of the mountain 411.
Infiltration and Lower-Court Reform
- Emei resolves the Lin Su’e dispute through compensation, mediation, and offers of sanctuary. It also agrees to shelter Yue Wen pending formal apprenticeship 423.
- Shi Feiyang impersonates Yue Yun, receives orthodox teachings, and secretly studies the formation. He engineers a false Blood Shadow crisis that directs suspicion toward Deng Yin while increasing his access to Jade Green Peak 424 427 428.
- His proposal to establish Xiaoyue’s rival sect pressures orthodox Emei into confronting Deng Yin. Victory weakens Deng Yin for roughly ten years and enables the creation of the lower court 429 430 437.
- As “Yue Yun,” Shi leads the juniors against Lie Baduo and then Ancestor Haha, seeking to draw Hunyuan out. That intended objective fails; Shi ultimately reveals his ability to escape Emei’s formation and returns the real Yue Yun 447 449 464 465.
Reconciliation and the Third Sword Duel
- Shi sends Qi Shouming a letter defending his conduct while offering peace. Qi replies through Zhuge Jingwo, thanking Shi for the hospitality shown to Emei’s disciples 534 552.
- Hunyuan’s Heavenly Demon Immortal-Slaying Sword kills forty-one people in the gathering and consumes their blood and spiritual essence. Emei traps it, but its influence reaches beyond the formation 561 562.
- The sword corrupts Wan Zhen, who destroys Qi Shouming’s body before becoming its vessel and dying. Qi survives as a pure-yang spirit 563.
- Qi transfers leadership to Li Yingqiong. Li Jingxu’s counsel calls for cooperation with Shi and defines Emei’s responsibilities as service to the wider immortal community 573.
“East Wind” and the War Against Chiyou
- Emei joins Shi Feiyang’s nationwide anti-cult campaign. Li Yingqiong destroys the Divine Dragon Cult’s mainland establishments and pursues its remnants overseas 599 600.
- Emei defeats Dongxuan’s Gu forces, destroys her stronghold, and kills Heavenly Silkworm Immortal Maiden. Zhuge Jingwo persuades the party to spare Heavenly Silkworm Boy as an exploited victim 602.
- During Chiyou’s invasion, Golden Cicada persuades a divided Emei contingent to honor its alliance with Shi instead of supporting the corrupted Jiang Xuejun 672 675.
- Jiang kills Lei Qu’e and Xu Xiange and traps the party in a Soul-Refining Formation. Shi intervenes and warns that they cannot safely fight her 676.
Renewed Blood God Threat
- Deng Yin captures 216 villagers to force Emei out of its protective formation. Qi Shouming answers with the True Edict and Golden Saber, but Stone God Princess rescues Deng Yin 717 719.
- Emei recovers the slain villagers’ souls and arranges rites for reincarnation. Qi urges broader cooperation after losing the True Edict in the fighting 719.
- Longbrow warns that Emei’s planned grotto-heaven will not survive the cosmic calamity and directs the sect toward eventual refuge in Shi’s Divine Dragon World. He also orders it to prevent Red Flower Princess from joining Deng Yin 720.
- Emei searches for Red Flower Princess in three regional parties, with Shi remotely guiding Li Yingqiong’s group to her Tianjin avatar 733.
Restoration, Displacement, and Final Ascension
- Giant Wood revives Master Baiyun, Laughing Monk, and other dead cultivators and recruits them into the Azure Flower School. Shi separately restores Demon Sword victims, including Drunken Taoist, Master Yuanyuan, and Xu Yuantong, though their memories are incomplete 737 738.
- Li Yingqiong refuses Giant Wood’s demand that Emei submit and abandon its Haotian faith. Unable to penetrate the formation, he surrounds the mountain with 54,000 divine trees and begins severing it from the earth 802.
- Facing annihilation, Emei sends Yue Yun for help. Shi rescues the mountain from the Blood Sea with the Haotian Mirror and returns it to Sichuan 807 810.
- The elders choose collective ascension, entrust the remaining lineage to Shangguan Hong and Shi, and surrender the Purple and Azure Swords and Jade Green Peak. Zhao Gongming repels Deng Yin’s attempt to attack the ascending immortals 811.
Notable Quotes
“Can we help Chiyou lead these barbarian Rong Tribes through the Great Wall and south to slaughter the Central Plains? What would that make our Emei Sect?”
— Golden Cicada, defending the alliance with Shi Feiyang 675.
“Disciples of Emei, heed my command! Follow me to slay demons and eradicate evil!”
— Golden Cicada, rallying the sect against Jiang Xuejun 675.
Original-Story Differences
- The narrative distinguishes Emei’s original destiny from the altered events: it was meant to become the foremost immortal sect, gather orthodox lineages into one house, and lead the myriad immortals 271 389.
- Its actual mansion-opening ceremony is far smaller, with fewer guests, insufficient recruits, and roughly half its elders already lost 411.
- Rather than completing that rise to supremacy, Emei ultimately preserves its lineage through ascension and sanctuary under its former adversary, Shi Feiyang 811.
