Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Orthodox Daoist cultivation 313 315 Began cultivating alongside Elder Longbrow before the Eastern Jin. Studied the Nine Heavens Profound Scripture, Lesser Purity Secret Manual, and later the Purple-Azure Precious Register.
Combined orthodox and demonic cultivation 313 316 Cultivated both the Purple-Azure Precious Register and Blood God Scripture. Claimed to have integrated their teachings without conflict.
Blood God Son transformation 313 After repeated defeats by Longbrow, flayed himself, pierced his acupoints with golden needles, and tempered his body with demon fire. Became a red human silhouette capable of consuming essence qi and primordial spirits.
Centuries of cultivation under confinement 313 314 Strengthened his demonic arts and dismantled eight or nine tenths of Longbrow’s sealing formation. His study deepened his understanding of time, space, hidden worlds, and the Heavenly Dao.
Cross-world reach 365 Reached the universe containing Earth before Shi Feiyang, demonstrating the Blood God Scripture’s ability to operate beyond their original world.
Three thousand blood-shadow incarnations — temporary empowerment 404 Xinru’s Buddhist realm assisted his division into three thousand incarnations and redirected their attacks toward Shi Feiyang.
Strengthened divine blood-demon flames 433 Ancient lamp oil increased the power of his three flames. They burned and demonized the formation’s small worlds and destroyed Qi Shouming’s Iron Bixi Immortal Shield.
Orthodox recovery from Purple-Green Tusita Fire 525 Nine years of practicing the Nine Heavens Profound Scripture eliminated the fire afflicting him after the Emei attack. He considered abandoning demonic cultivation, but returned to it under Red Flower Princess’s influence.
Union with the Heavenly Demon Immortal-Slaying Sword 567 Offered the sword his essence blood and bonded with it. Its increased power shattered or disabled numerous opposing weapons and broke Master Youtan’s Buddhist defenses.
Further empowerment by Chiyou 568 Chiyou poured accumulated souls and blood essence into him, overwhelming his remaining moral restraint. Li Jingxu judged himself unable to subdue Deng Yin in this state.
Completed Blood Pool 725 After one hundred days, completed a pool capable of restoring Xiaoyue’s damaged soul and recreating his body as a blood-god form.
Mature Blood Pool network 738 Expanded the project into 108,000 blood lakes across Star Lodge Sea. The pools could withstand Nine-Spirit Primordial Sage’s roars without collapsing or releasing their captive spirits.

Background / History

Deng Yin and Elder Longbrow, Ren Shou, cultivated together from before the Eastern Jin. Originally warm-hearted and eager to help others, Deng Yin shared a bond with Longbrow closer than ordinary blood brotherhood. Longbrow entrusted him with the Purple Ying Sword while keeping the more difficult Azure Cord Sword himself 313 316.

Deng Yin married Shen Wugou, and the couple were deeply devoted to one another. Together with Longbrow and the other two elders, they studied the Purple-Azure Precious Register and traveled to accumulate good deeds 313.

By the Northern Song, Deng Yin was using demonic powers to commit countless killings. Longbrow repeatedly pursued and defeated him. Deng Yin’s subsequent Skinning Cultivation transformed him into Blood God Son, allowing him to absorb victims and wear their bodies to deceive their friends and relatives 313.

Longbrow eventually captured him with the Two-Polarity Dust-Mote Formation and confined him beneath Star Lodge Sea. He left a prophecy that genuine repentance could still save Deng Yin, but escape without reform would lead to the annihilation of both his body and spirit. Centuries of confinement instead strengthened Deng Yin’s determination to destroy Longbrow’s descendants 313.

His hatred was also rooted in the death of a woman he loved: he remembered Longbrow demanding that he kill her, then destroying her with the Azure Cord Sword when he refused. Deng Yin rejected Chishi Divine Monarch’s argument that Longbrow’s decision to spare him deserved gratitude 411.

Appearance

  • Blood-demon body: A red human silhouette formed from refined flesh and blood rather than an ordinary intact body 313.
  • Dispersed form: Can scatter into deep crimson blood light and condense back into human shape 402.
  • Three overhead flames: His strongest divine blood-demon flames appear above his head during combat 433.
  • Blood-red aura: His arrival at Mount Jiuhua stained the sky and bathed the mountain in a glow resembling a massacre 553.
  • Borrowed appearances: Uses stolen bodies, possessed intermediaries, and blood-made incarnations to conceal his identity 313 315 553.

Personality

Deng Yin’s defining grievance is his relationship with Elder Longbrow. Affection, gratitude, fear, and hatred remain inseparable: even his desire to slaughter Emei’s disciples stems from his fixation on his senior brother. He is willing to risk heavenly retribution to erase Longbrow’s mortal legacy 404 411.

He is patient and highly manipulative. He offers solutions to another person’s greatest fear, then uses that need to secure cooperation. His original promise to reward Shi Feiyang with a supreme scripture was deliberately dishonest, while his recruitment of Xiaoyue exploited the latter’s fear of punishment and desire to surpass his former fellow disciples 314 316 525.

His courtesy is selective. Toward Shi Feiyang he can be accommodating and affectionate; toward others he projects arrogance and terrifying spiritual pressure. His public harmony with Jiang Shu conceals contempt and a desire to humiliate him 411 553.

Deng Yin nevertheless retains remorse and attachment. Memories of Shen Wugou make him ashamed of his demonic existence, and Xiaoyue’s death prompts him to acknowledge responsibility for teaching corrupting arts. Such moments do not secure lasting reform: resentment, romantic attachment, and confidence in his own mastery repeatedly draw him back toward demonic power 525 548 553 565.

Abilities & Skills

Blood Shadow Divine Skill

Transforms his body into blood light, making conventional bodily destruction largely ineffective 313 402.

  • Absorbs a victim’s essence qi and primordial spirit through direct contact 313.
  • Seizes bodily shells and uses them to ambush people who trust the victim 313.
  • Survives Master Ren’s crushing pestle strikes by dispersing and re-forming 402.
  • Closes around most flying-sword wounds like water; Gongye Huang’s Ink Dragon Flying Sword is a notable exception 359.
  • Invades an opponent’s body and attempts to possess it or refine its power 402.

Blood-Shadow Incarnations

Creates independent blood-made manifestations for deception, movement, and attack.

  • Sends an external incarnation in one direction while his true body doubles back 433.
  • Produces an incarnation from a drop of blood concealed in a tea bowl 553.
  • Turns falling blood rain into attacking blood figures 567.
  • Reaches three thousand incarnations with Xinru’s assistance; this is not presented as an unaided baseline ability 404.

Divine Blood-Demon Flames

His three principal flames reinforce his Blood Shadow Divine Light and attack both physical defenses and constructed worlds.

  • Ancient divine lamp oil increases their strength 433.
  • Burn and demonize small worlds generated by the Two-Polarity Dust-Mote Formation 433.
  • Empower blood-red rays released from his ten fingers 433.
  • Strip spiritual potency from Qi Shouming’s Iron Bixi Immortal Shield before piercing it into inert iron 433.

Formation Knowledge and World Traversal

Centuries spent studying his prison made Deng Yin exceptionally familiar with the Two-Polarity Dust-Mote Formation.

  • Identifies gates, feints through its changing routes, and targets Jade Green Peak’s formation core 433.
  • Crosses countless small worlds in a flash of blood-red light 433.
  • Understands aspects of time, space, and hidden worlds through prolonged study 314.
  • Reaches the universe containing Earth despite remaining constrained by Longbrow’s original imprisonment 365 711.

Divination and Mental Influence

  • Controls Snow Mountain Sect disciples as remote messengers 313 314 316.
  • Appears in dreams as the Clear Void Great Emperor and recruits followers through promises of salvation 356.
  • Uses Master Ren’s concern for Xie Shan—and a credible vision of his possible future—to create an opening in her Vajra Womb-Realm 402.
  • Can plunge many lesser cultivators into demonic illusions with a glance 553.
  • Appears to perceive Li Jingxu’s private thoughts after bonding with the Demon Sword 567.

Blood Pool Cultivation

Uses blood lakes and a central pool to accumulate demonic power, contain spirits, and manufacture blood-god bodies.

  • Restores Xiaoyue’s damaged primordial spirit and recreates his body 725.
  • Demands that assembled cultivators enter the pool; they suspect transformation will place them under his control 725.
  • Develops a network of 108,000 blood lakes across Star Lodge Sea 738.
  • Commands allies accompanied by hundreds of Blood Gods 747 758.

Limitations and Vulnerabilities

  • Damaged Dao foundation: Skinning Cultivation damaged his body and prevents him from producing the “true lead” needed to regulate desire through orthodox bodily cultivation 565.
  • Unstable Dao heart: Great magical power does not protect him from influences that redirect his ambitions while leaving him apparently lucid 565.
  • Specialized weapons: The Ink Dragon Flying Sword can injure him; the Buddha-Fire Heart Lamp is treated as a potentially fatal threat 359 405.
  • Psychological interference: Master Ren secretly clouds his judgment during the Emei battle until Shi Feiyang warns him 433.
  • Opponent-specific containment: Shi Feiyang’s prepared White Jade Lotus Seed breaks his body apart from within, allowing Jiang Shu to capture him with the Haotian Mirror and Nine-Doubt Cauldron 569.
  • Spiritual countermeasures: Giant Wood’s scriptures and Nine-Spirit Primordial Sage’s roars initially destroy his blood lakes and dissolve his heavenly demons’ blood pacts 723.

  • Chishi Divine Monarch — Longstanding loyal friend who risked his life protecting Deng Yin from Longbrow. Repeatedly urges him to abandon revenge 411.
  • Nine-Li Divine Lord — Rescued ally. Deng Yin values his strength and hostility toward Shi Feiyang’s lineage 411 727.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Contact, Temptation, and Cross-World Activity

Shi Feiyang’s environmental work draws Deng Yin’s attention. Through a controlled disciple, Deng offers supreme scriptures and formation secrets in exchange for release. Shi refuses, judging the danger to innocent people greater than the strategic advantage 313 314.

Deng then recruits Xiaoyue by offering protection from Longbrow’s Soul-Slaying Flying Knife and access to powerful swords. During the failed Purple Ying retrieval, he withdraws his control of the messenger before Xun Lanyin can identify him 314 315 316.

He also reaches the universe containing Earth and presents himself to followers as a divine savior. Shi Feiyang openly admits that his instruction of disciples there was intended to guard against Deng Yin 356 365.

Release and Sworn Brotherhood

Deng Yin helps coordinate the timing of several volatile factions’ attacks before his release. At the Sacred Mausoleum, Shi shows him a future in which escape ends in annihilation, securing his cooperation against the Buddhist masters 391 401.

After their joint survival, friendship remains uncertain. A later confrontation over Xiong Manniang’s stolen rings ends with binding oaths: Deng promises not to kill innocents, and Shi promises not to oppose him while he honors that condition. They become sworn brothers, with Jiang Shu included as the third brother 404 405 412.

Emei Campaign and Attempted Reform

Deng Yin attacks Emei with his allies, but the fully activated Two-Polarity Dust-Mote Formation and its defenders prevent an easy victory. Shi’s warning saves him from Master Ren’s covert interference; the battle nevertheless costs his faction heavily and leaves him afflicted by Purple-Green Tusita Fire 433 717.

Orthodox cultivation eventually cures the fire. Later, after Xiaoyue’s death, Deng acknowledges the harm caused by his teachings and promises to follow the righteous path. He reluctantly surrenders the Evil Book despite his attachment to Red Flower Princess 525 548.

Jiang Shu’s Capture and the Demon Sword

Deng Yin’s attempt to humiliate Jiang Shu traps his sworn brother inside the Yin-Yang Clam Shell. Its theft by Gu Chen forces Deng and Shi Feiyang to travel north to rescue him 553 554.

On their return, Shi turns Deng’s susceptibility to Chiyou into a trap for the Heavenly Demon Immortal-Slaying Sword. The gambit succeeds in drawing the sword to him, but Deng embraces its power, rejects Shi’s effort to restore his conscience, and attacks his elder brother 565 566 567 568.

Shi activates the hidden lotus seed, Jiang Shu captures Deng Yin, and the Demon Sword is split. Chiyou escapes. Shi explicitly rejects utterly destroying Deng Yin, who later recognizes that Shi had treated him better than anyone since Longbrow 569 571.

Renewed Blood Demon Campaign

A later scheme proposes extracting Deng Yin from Lingqiao Immortal Mansion through gradual bodily substitution. By his subsequent appearance, Deng again regards Shi Feiyang as a deceiver who used him and nearly destroyed his accumulated cultivation 669 710 711.

His search for Red Flower Princess escalates into mass slaughter in Sichuan and the construction of blood lakes. Giant Wood’s intervention repeatedly destroys the early lakes, even converting the heavenly demons Deng summons through child sacrifices 723.

Deng consolidates his project at Star Lodge Sea, promises a world without moral restraints, and uses Xiaoyue’s restored body to demonstrate the Blood Pool’s power before demanding others enter it. The pool network eventually stabilizes, while Deng delegates forces to assist Xinru and prepares to confront Giant Wood 724 725 738 747 758.
