Meng Huai's expression turned grim as he stared at the Two-Headed Blood Corpse before him. He had never expected them to be capable of this. He had really overplayed his hand this time.
Yun Zimo went pale with fear. She had never imagined that a scene she had only seen on television would unfold right before her eyes. If she had not already seen a thing or two, she probably would have wet herself.
Meng Huai said sternly, "I never imagined you could turn into a Two-Headed Blood Corpse. It seems your relationship is far more complicated than I thought."
Shan Meirong said viciously, "You meddling bastard, you're dead today. I'll tear your woman to pieces right in front of you and make her one with my son."
Xiang Yu kept making hoarse chuckling sounds. Whether he was pleased or opposed to the idea was impossible to tell; his whole face was smeared with blood.
Meng Huai snorted. "You think turning into a Two-Headed Corpse Gu lets you throw your weight around in front of me? Well, admittedly it does, but I'm no pushover either. I'll fight you to the death!"
At first, Yun Zimo found his words reassuring, but by the end, she realized something was off. Her husband clearly lacked confidence. The thing facing them must really be formidable.
She said timidly, "I'm only a burden here. Don't worry about me. Just run!"
Meng Huai glared at her. "What nonsense are you talking about? You're my woman. How could I abandon you? If they want to hurt you, they'll have to step over my dead body."
Yun Zimo was overwhelmed with emotion. Her husband was simply too good to her. She would live or die with him, and no one would ever separate them.
Shan Meirong's face twisted as she shouted, "You two bastards, stop flaunting your love in front of me! I'll send you both to hell today and show you what happens when you cross me!"
As she spoke, she advanced, leaving sticky pools of blood with every step. Like sulfuric acid, the blood ate pits into the marble floor.
Meng Huai decided to strike first. He immediately formed a hand seal, opened his mouth, and spat out dozens of tiny insects again. They swiftly landed on the Two-Headed Corpse Gu.
To his surprise, the moment the insects landed, they became stuck in the blood. It quickly enveloped them and dissolved them into nourishment for his opponent.
Meng Huai's eyes widened. This thing was absurd. With that armor of blood protecting it, his Gu insects were completely useless.
Without his Gu insects to fight for him, he was a toothless tiger. He could do nothing but stare helplessly.
Meng Huai took a deep breath and silently weighed his options. He did not know whether releasing his Life-Bound Golden Silkworm Gu would be enough to hold them off, but he had to take the gamble. Otherwise, they would both die.
Just then, the Two-Headed Corpse Gu, which had been advancing step by step, suddenly stopped. Something seemed to have gone wrong.
Xiang Yu's head struggled incessantly, letting out beastlike growls, as though he wanted to tear free of the body and no longer remain fused with his mother.
Shan Meirong looked panicked and kept shouting, "Son, my darling baby, what are you doing? Hurry up and help Mommy kill these two bad people! Then you'll get what you wanted!"
Meng Huai stared in astonishment, unsure what was happening. But he immediately noticed an exposed patch where the Two-Headed Corpse Gu's necks joined, uncovered by blood. Inside it was a blood-red worm.
He knew that worm was the Life-Bound Gu. Without a moment's hesitation, he opened his mouth and spat out a streak of golden light, which turned into a plump golden silkworm in midair.
The golden silkworm rapidly spat out silk, wrapping it around the blood-red worm. Then it pulled desperately, trying to drag the worm out of the body.
Shan Meirong screamed and tried to grab the silk, but the other hand reached out and seized hers, holding it firmly so she could not move it at all.
Shan Meirong shrieked in terror, "What are you doing? Everything I've done has been for you! Ever since you were little, I've fulfilled every wish you had. You can't treat Mommy like this!"
Xiang Yu was like a trapped beast, crying out hoarsely again and again. His eyes were filled with pain and resolve, as though he was trying to break free of something.
The Golden Silkworm Gu pulled harder and harder. It had dragged nearly the entire worm out, but the tail remained attached to the body, refusing to break free no matter how hard it pulled.
Meng Huai pulled a flask from his pocket and drained the remaining liquor. Then he charged forward and spat a mouthful of flame straight onto Xiang Yu's head.
Seeing her son's head burning, Shan Meirong immediately cried out. The blood covering her body writhed, enveloping his head and extinguishing the flames.
Doing so required her to redirect her power, causing her grip to slacken for an instant. The Golden Silkworm Gu seized that opening, dragged the blood worm free, swiftly pulled it to its mouth, and swallowed it whole.
Meng Huai likewise dared not hesitate. He hurriedly opened his mouth, and the Golden Silkworm Gu turned into golden light and flew back. Only after he swallowed it into his belly was it completely safe.
Both heads of the Two-Headed Corpse Gu let out agonized howls at once. Then it abruptly burst apart, becoming two bodies again, both horribly mangled.
Xiang Yu struggled to crawl back into his mother's arms. Like a little child, he hugged her tightly, his face filled with happiness.
Shan Meirong's formerly hideous, terrifying face suddenly filled with tenderness. With her one remaining hand, she gently patted her son's back, humming a lullaby.
Meng Huai let out a long sigh and formed a Hand Seal with both hands. Countless ants appeared on the floor and instantly engulfed the mother and son. Moments later, nothing remained.
The ants multiplied, spreading into every room. They not only devoured all the corpses but also destroyed everything else.
After Meng Huai and Yun Zimo retreated outside, the dormitory building collapsed with a thunderous crash, reduced entirely to rubble.
Meng Huai called Zhao Zhen. Soon, people arrived to deal with the scene thoroughly. Tomorrow's newspaper would carry a report about a shoddily constructed building.
Sitting in the car, Meng Huai took a swig from a bottle and said, "A mother's love is indeed great, but a twisted mother's love can only inspire fear.
"Xiang Yu joined the Night God Church not just to get you, but more importantly to escape his mother. Unfortunately, in the end, he was still a child who couldn't leave his mommy."
Yun Zimo was a very clever girl. Thinking back on what had happened and considering Meng Huai's words, she understood what was going on. Disbelief spread across her face.
Meng Huai continued, "If I'm not mistaken, every girlfriend Xiang Yu had before must have met with some kind of misfortune. Luckily, he failed to win you over. Otherwise, you and I would never have had our chance."
Yun Zimo clutched Meng Huai's arm. The more she thought about it, the more terrifying it became. She had never imagined that such a renowned, successful career woman could be someone like that.
