Background / History

Upbringing and recruitment

Xiang Yu’s father died young, leaving Shan Meirong to raise him through considerable hardship. She loved and pampered him, hoping he would become a decent person rather than demanding exceptional achievements 14 16.

He met tour guide He Huaying, also known as Golden Flower, during a trip. They subsequently spent time together, and she took him to the Lovers’ Festival at Butterfly Spring and introduced him to the Night God Church 16.

His obsession with Yun Zimo made the Church’s promises especially attractive. After his defeat, Meng Huai also concludes that he joined partly to escape his mother’s possessive control 16 39.

Fashion-show poisoning

Special Envoy Ye Zifeng supplied Xiang Yu with a cake containing Lust Gu, promising that Yun Zimo would be at his mercy after eating it. The gu instead activated during the fashion show, causing a scandal and damaging both the sponsor’s brand and Yun’s company 9 10.

Xiang Yu blamed Yun for the failed show and offered to suppress the fallout if she became his woman. When Meng Huai posed as her fiancé, Xiang Yu threatened violence and revenge. Meng secretly planted an Echo Gu on his shoulder, allowing him to overhear Xiang Yu’s subsequent meeting with Ye Zifeng 9 10.

The early activation was later revealed to be deliberate interference by Fan Yuli, who said she wanted to ruin the show and take revenge on Xiang Yu. Meng reasoned that Xiang Yu had intended to exploit the models afterward, not sabotage the corporate event that supported his own influence 22.

Betrayal, repentance, and death

Xiang Yu also arranged for his mother to be poisoned. When Shan questioned his unexplained withdrawals from company funds, he claimed the money was already his as heir. She froze his financial access, excluded him from company affairs, and announced plans to send him abroad 13 14.

He responded by demanding control of the company and attempting to trigger the gu inside her. The attempt failed because Meng had already removed the worms. Xiang Yu then turned his drum-assisted powers against Shan, Yun, and Meng 14.

Meng defeated him after the drum broke and the silver snake extracted his gu poison. With his conscience restored, Xiang Yu begged his mother’s forgiveness and disclosed the Church’s villa location. Shan accepted his apology and asked him to help care for their business 15 16.

Immediately after Meng and Yun left, Xiang Yu fell from the third floor and died. Meng suspected that the Night God Church had used a spell to silence him for revealing its whereabouts; the passage does not confirm the mechanism 16.

Return as a walking corpse

A Church envoy later promised Shan a means to resurrect her son. At the Fenglan factory dormitory, Meng and Yun discovered Xiang Yu’s bloodied body accompanying her, with his soul still trapped inside it 37 38.

Shan used a Luo Fu Drum to command him in battle and rebuilt his crushed body with flesh gathered by blood-red worms. She eventually fused with him into a Two-Headed Corpse Gu 38.

Xiang Yu resisted the fusion, exposing the blood-red Life-Bound Gu at the joined necks. Meng’s Golden Silkworm extracted and swallowed it, breaking the fused body apart. Xiang Yu crawled into Shan’s arms before Meng summoned ants to consume them both and destroy the surrounding corpses and building 39.

Appearance

  • During drum activation: His eyes become blood-red, and black threadworms emerge from every pore 14.
  • As a walking corpse: His face is smeared with blood, and his flesh can fall away under his mother’s touch 37 38.
  • Movement and speech: His corpse moves mechanically with stiff, precise steps. He can produce hoarse sounds but no longer speak 38.
  • Fused form: He shares a two-headed body with Shan Meirong, surrounded by sticky, corrosive blood 39.

Personality

Before his defeat, Xiang Yu is entitled, jealous, and coercive. He treats his future inheritance as money already belonging to him, tries to turn Yun Zimo’s business crisis into sexual leverage, and threatens Meng Huai for showing affection toward her. At the Church’s villa, he also exploits a young woman under the pretense of spiritual cultivation 9 10 14.

The narrative distinguishes this cruelty from his remaining conscience. Once the gu poison is removed, he recognizes the horror of attacking his mother, apologizes tearfully, and cooperates with Meng’s investigation 16.

His final resistance to being fused with Shan shows that some desire for freedom survives in his corpse. Nevertheless, after their separation, he returns to her embrace like a child seeking comfort 39.

Abilities & Skills

Drum-Assisted Gu Defense

Xiang Yu’s combat powers depend on a counterfeit Luofu Drum rather than established personal cultivation 14 15 50.

  • Draws black worms from his body and assembles them into a larger creature 14.
  • Produces a barrier that destroys an approaching beetle and initially prevents the silver snake from reaching him 15.
  • Fails when repeated drumbeats break the instrument; the silver snake then removes his gu poison 15.

Walking-Corpse Body

His posthumous body retains his soul through a method distinct from Corpse-Control Gu 37.

  • Can move and attack while its head is detached 38.
  • Can be reconstructed into a stronger body using flesh gathered by blood-red worms 38.
  • Acts as Shan’s weapon under her drum commands; independent resistance becomes evident during their fusion 38 39.

Two-Headed Corpse Gu

This ability belongs to the fused mother-and-son creature, not Xiang Yu alone 38 39.

  • Its blood corrodes marble and dissolves ordinary attacking gu insects into nourishment 39.
  • Its critical weakness is the blood-red Life-Bound Gu concealed where the necks join 39.
  • Xiang Yu’s struggle exposes that weak point, enabling the Golden Silkworm to destroy the fusion 39.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Counterfeit Luofu Drum — His principal combat artifact. Meng identifies it as an imitation connected to the genuine Luofu Drum; its destruction leaves Xiang Yu defenseless 15.
  • Lust Gu-laced cake — Supplied by Ye Zifeng for the scheme against Yun Zimo and the models 9 10.

Relationships

  • Shan Meirong — Mother and Fenglan Group chairwoman. He poisons her, later earns her forgiveness, and becomes the focus of her destructive attempt at resurrection. Meng attributes part of his Church involvement to a desire to escape her control 14 16 38 39.
  • Yun Zimo — Object of his unwanted pursuit. He attempts to obtain her through gu poisoning, financial pressure, and threats 9 10.
  • Meng Huai — Adversary who exposes his scheme, defeats him, and restores his conscience. Meng later destroys his walking-corpse body 9 15 16 39.
  • Ye Zifeng — Night God Church Special Envoy who supplies the poisoned cake and promises further action against Yun 10.
  • He Huaying / Golden Flower — Tour guide who introduces him to the Night God Church; his identification of her gives Meng a new investigative lead 16 20.
