Meng Huai followed Yun Zimo to the largest office building in Dian City. Anyone who could set up an office here had to be seriously impressive.

Yun Zimo took Meng Huai to the eighteenth floor and said proudly, "My best friend's firm is amazing. They've leased this entire floor."

Meng Huai curled his lip. "Pretty impressive, all right. Good thing they practice law. Otherwise, with a whole floor of hell to themselves, most of them would probably be dead by now."

Yun Zimo's expression shifted slightly. "Why would you say that? Eighteen sounds like 'going to prosper.' It's such an auspicious number!"

Meng Huai smiled casually. "Haven't you heard of the eighteen levels of hell? I don't know what people these days are thinking. They think everything foreign is better, so they follow foreigners in shunning thirteen and calling it the devil's number.

"They don't even consider regional differences. A foreign devil would have to kneel once it came here. It wouldn't be used to the local conditions, after all. What our ancestors passed down is the real truth, but people refuse to believe it. If they end up dead, they have only themselves to blame."

Yun Zimo rolled her eyes. "Nothing but bad omens out of your mouth. If anyone heard you, they'd beat your face into a bloody mess."

Meng Huai grinned cheekily. "As long as I'm lucky in love, I don't care what happens to my face."

Yun Zimo could do nothing with him. She could only pout and ignore him, though she still reached out to take his hand. She led him to a large office, knocked, and went inside.

There was only one desk in the office, which showed that its occupant held a high position. Otherwise, she would never have had the whole room to herself.

Behind the desk sat an elegant career woman. She was Yun Zimo's best friend, the firm's chief attorney, and Dian City's renowned beautiful lawyer, Zhao Yuejiao.

Yun Zimo smiled brightly. "Sorry to interrupt such a busy woman!"

Zhao Yuejiao shot Yun Zimo a look. "Always teasing me. Some high-powered businesswoman you are. So this is your fiancé? He looks pretty good.

"Have you two worked out how to divide your assets? Mainly your fiancé's, of course. A beauty like you is marrying him, so you'd better get a hefty share."

Meng Huai felt as though thunder were crashing overhead. This woman was something else. It had to be an occupational hazard: she was talking about dividing assets right off the bat. Next would probably come divorce proceedings, though they would have to get married first.

Zhao Yuejiao smiled gracefully. "I'm used to joking around with Zimo. Please don't mind me, Mr. Meng."

Meng Huai chuckled. "Not at all. But you got one thing wrong just now. I've already given Zimo all my savings."

Yun Zimo blushed slightly and glared at Meng Huai. He chuckled, looking positively asking for a beating.

Zhao Yuejiao shook her head inwardly. Yun Zimo was famous for being an ice-cold beauty and hated frivolous grins more than anything. Yet she had found herself a man like this. Fate truly was a mysterious thing.

Yun Zimo took out the Foundation's documents. Business came first, after all.

With nothing to do, Meng Huai looked around. Suddenly, he spotted a fat middle-aged man and let out an involuntary sound of surprise, drawing both women's attention.

Meng Huai asked Zhao Yuejiao, "If you resigned from this firm, it wouldn't be hard for you to find another job, would it?"

Yun Zimo answered for her. "Yuejiao has a stellar reputation. People wanting to hire her could line up from here to Dian Lake. But why would she resign?"

Meng Huai smiled nonchalantly. "To stay alive, obviously. What good is a reputation if you're dead?"

Zhao Yuejiao's expression changed, and she said angrily, "I was wrong to joke earlier, but there's no need to curse me like that, Mr. Meng. Isn't that rather petty of a man?"

Before Meng Huai could speak, Yun Zimo cut in. "He wouldn't joke about something like this. You need to resign right away!"

Zhao Yuejiao frowned. "What's gotten into you? How has he bewitched you? Are you two playing a joke on me?"

Looking outside through the floor-to-ceiling window, Meng Huai said, "That fat middle-aged man is about to collapse. People shouldn't do things that weigh on their conscience, or retribution is sure to come."

No sooner had he finished speaking than the fat middle-aged man toppled headfirst to the floor. He began foaming at the mouth, his body convulsing nonstop. The coworkers beside him screamed at the sight.

Zhao Yuejiao stared in astonishment. "Are you some kind of miracle doctor? Hurry up and save him!"

Meng Huai wagged a finger. "I don't know the first thing about medicine. If you had to put a label on me, in terms you'd understand, you could call me a charlatan.

"As I just said, people shouldn't do things that weigh on their conscience. His retribution has arrived. Once he's dead, I'll take a look at what happened."

Zhao Yuejiao huffed angrily, hurriedly opened the door, and ran out. Meng Huai and Yun Zimo followed her out.

Yun Zimo whispered, "Are you saying someone put a gu curse on that fat man?"

Meng Huai nodded. "The black aura around him is incredibly strong. It means he's done every wicked thing imaginable, and now his retribution has come. Under the rules of Gu Masters, whoever placed the curse must be severely punished.

"But someone like him must have done terrible harm to the other person. So we usually let them take their revenge and settle everything before we intervene."

Yun Zimo blinked, feeling there was nothing wrong with that. Unless someone had been pushed too far, how many people would deliberately harm others? Surely people with abilities shouldn't just have to swallow injustice!

Meng Huai had been watching from the sidelines when his gaze suddenly sharpened. He stepped forward, pushed aside the people blocking his way, and crouched in front of the fat man.

He tugged at the fat man's collar and looked at the bulging veins in his neck, his expression turning grave.

The entire firm was in chaos. With the boss absent, Zhao Yuejiao was the highest-ranking person there, and she kept shouting instructions.

Meng Huai shouted, "Everyone shut up! You're driving me crazy! There's no need to call an ambulance. A hospital can't treat him either. What I'm about to do will turn everything you know upside down. You mustn't tell anyone!"

As he spoke, he formed a hand seal and drew a finger across the fat man's neck. His fingertip was like a blade, easily slicing open a blood vessel. Then he pinched a beetle out of it.

Meng Huai had Yun Zimo bring him a paper cup and dropped the beetle inside. Then he passed his hand over the wound, restoring it to its original state.

Repeating the process, he removed another eight beetles from the fat man's neck. The man groaned, clearly beginning to recover.

Everyone around them stared, dumbfounded. They were all elite legal professionals with years of education behind them. Seeing such a scene was simply overwhelming.

Meng Huai told Zhao Yuejiao, "Contact your boss and have everyone take time off. Also, if he wants this matter resolved, tell him to bring this fat man to the Villa to see me."

With that, he turned and left, giving none of them a chance to speak. Everyone stepped aside, their eyes filled with fear.

In the elevator, Yun Zimo asked, "Is this going to be a lot of trouble?"

Meng Huai burst out laughing. "Didn't I look impressive back there? That was exactly the effect I wanted. This isn't a simple matter."

His expression was grim when he spoke that last sentence.
