Meng Huai looked at the two women before him. He had not expected the owner of this law firm to be a formidable career woman too. Just thinking about it felt like a headache.
Liu Jun smiled gracefully. "Qin Xiuying and I were classmates, and we've always been very close friends. I know a little about your situation too, Mr. Meng. Please lend us a hand."
Meng Huai frowned slightly. These people in high society really were all connected, sharing information with one another over even the smallest matters.
He said sternly, "Since you know about me, that saves me wasting my breath. Originally, I didn't want to get involved. I was going to leave him to his fate.
"But the other party used blood corpse gu. Even after he dies, his soul won't be able to pass on, and his corpse might turn into an undead creature. That's why I had no choice but to help."
Liu Shourui, the fat man, was so frightened by this that he nearly wet himself.
He hurriedly pleaded, "Master, you have to save me! I'll do anything you ask. I don't want to die!"
Meng Huai snorted. "You should first think about what you've done. Unless someone bore a deep grudge against you, they would never resort to this.
"Besides, you're shrouded in black energy. Clearly, you're no good person. If the gu they used weren't so vicious that it might harm other people, I'd gladly watch you die."
Liu Shourui's expression turned extremely ugly. He loved money and especially enjoyed representing the nouveau riche in court. He had no scruples and would use any despicable tactic.
Countless ordinary people who had lost their lawsuits wanted to skin him alive, eat his flesh, and grind his bones to dust. Only then could they vent their hatred.
Meng Huai looked at Liu Jun. "You're his boss. There's no way you didn't know about a lot of this, so you count as an accomplice. Luckily for you, there are still a few decent people at your firm.
"And you didn't go all the way and fire those decent people. You've benefited from their virtue, which has offset the baleful energy on you. That leaves you somewhere between good and bad.
"But sooner or later, misfortune will catch up with you. It's just a question of who will suffer the retribution. If you aren't married yet, you'd better stay that way, rather than bring disaster on someone else."
Meng Huai had an absolutely venomous tongue. His words made Liu Jun wish she could crawl into a crack in the ground, while terror filled her heart. Who wouldn't be afraid of something like this?
Zhao Yuejiao said to Yun Zimo, "You know that in our line of work, we earn money by going against our consciences. A lot of the time, we don't have a choice. Our firm is actually one of the better ones. We often provide free legal aid. Please help us!"
Yun Zimo nodded. "Yuejiao's right. They handled several recent cases to recover unpaid wages for migrant workers, and they got quite a lot of money back."
Meng Huai glared. "If I didn't know that, you wouldn't even have made it through the door. Whoever tied the knot has to untie it. To resolve this, we need to know who planted the gu.
"We have to deal with the root of the problem. You can't stay on guard forever. Just because I can save you once doesn't mean I can save you every time. And after the other party fails, their methods will only become more vicious."
Liu Jun thought for a moment. "I think this might be connected to the case Liu Shourui is currently handling. The Wang Taiying case. It's very well known online."
Meng Huai sprang to his feet, pointed at Liu Shourui, and shouted, **"You're that bastard lawyer! If I'd fucking known it was you, I'd have put two more gu worms in you myself.
"Do you know what I'm thinking right now? I want to strangle you this instant, you bastard! How could you even say something like that? She was just a little girl—a little girl who'd been victimized! Don't you have children?
"Whoever's taking revenge is being pretty merciful. They should have planted the gu in your child and let you learn what it means to suffer something firsthand, you bastard.
"Get out of here right now! I won't save you. And you two can fend for yourselves too. A person has to have some moral limits. You're worse than dogs!"**
The three of them endured his furious scolding with their heads lowered, not daring to say a word. Still, they were used to being berated and could take it.
Yun Zimo's face was livid too. She said to Zhao Yuejiao, "I thought we were close friends. You brought scum like this here. Are you trying to end our friendship?
"If you don't want to be friends anymore, then we won't be. I'm trying to set up a charitable foundation, and you want my husband to save scum like this? What exactly are you trying to do?"
Zhao Yuejiao said evasively, "I know this was wrong too, but a lot of things aren't what you think. We didn't have a choice either."
Meng Huai drew a breath. "Listen carefully. After you die, I'll follow the rules and kill whoever planted the gu. But I won't do anything for you. Please leave!"
Liu Shourui dropped to his knees with a thud, tears and snot streaming down his face. "I know I was wrong. I only did it because I was greedy for money. Please save me. I don't want to die."
Meng Huai snorted. "You don't want to die? Did that little girl who jumped off the building want to die? Do you know what retribution means? This is retribution.
"If an apology could fix everything, what would we need heavenly justice for? I'm sure this person won't stop. After killing you, their next target will definitely be your boss.
"So you can start putting your affairs in order. Buy two urns. Maybe you can get a bulk discount. People like you don't even deserve urns."
Liu Jun turned pale and said hurriedly, "I know this was my fault, and we've already paid for it. Public outrage is practically drowning us now, but we really had no choice.
"I promise you, Mr. Meng, we'll never do anything like this again. And every year, I'll represent a hundred—no, a thousand ordinary people in court. You have to save us."
Meng Huai tapped his fingers on the desk. "If you want me to save you, fine. Have that scumbag tell everyone the whole, unvarnished truth and give that little girl the justice she deserves."
Liu Jun frowned. "If we do that, our firm's reputation will be ruined. Besides, this involves too many people. We can't afford to take them on!"
Meng Huai clapped his hands. "Since you can't give her justice, pay her back with your lives. Either give her justice or pay with your lives. Two choices. That sounds perfectly fair!"
Zhao Yuejiao suddenly raised her head. "Yes, we have no conscience. Yes, we're worse than animals. We deserve condemnation, but people can't just kill us as they please.
"You're a capable man. How can you stand by while someone does whatever they want? You said yourself that killing people who use gu to harm others is your responsibility. You should do your duty."
Meng Huai sneered. "You really do know your trade. Nicely put. I've never seen someone admit to being an animal with such self-righteous confidence. This has certainly been an education.
"Don't try to guilt-trip me. That won't work. If I say I won't save you, I won't. If you want to live, I'll point you toward a way out."
The three of them brightened and looked eagerly at Meng Huai, wanting to know what that way out was.
