Early-stage Nascent Soul 1068 His publicly displayed cultivation while living as an imperial grandson of Great Li in another world. This belongs to that world’s cultivation system rather than the progression listed above.

Background / History

Childhood and concealed parentage

Li Miaoxuan names Chengyi and watches him take his first steps at eight months old. After she leaves their world, Li Haotian raises him in the imperial palace 83 158.

At three, Chengyi becomes unconscious and unresponsive. Imperial physicians cannot help him, so Li Shi’an brings him to Gu Yuanqing. Gu discovers that spirit spring water has prematurely awakened a sealed treasure in the child’s Divine Court, trapping his consciousness inside it. After waking, Chengyi describes flying within a bead and playing with living clouds 156 157.

Gu Yuanqing initially feels an unexplained affinity with Chengyi and offers to accept him as a disciple. Li Haotian refuses, then reveals that the child is Li Miaoxuan’s son—and therefore Gu’s own son. The revelation leads to a dispute over Chengyi’s upbringing: Haotian emphasizes governance and palace education, while Gu insists that the boy should be free to choose something other than the throne 157 158.

Heir apparent and emperor

Chengyi’s appointment as heir apparent faces no opposition under Li Haotian’s consolidated rule. Around this time, Haotian tells him that the Imperial Chronicles conceal the truth about his mother. When shown an image of Miaoxuan, Chengyi recognizes her as the woman he saw inside his Divine Court pearl during his breakthrough 185.

Chengyi chooses to marry Chen Binglan, daughter of Grand General Chen Ao. He seeks his father’s approval and invites him to the wedding; Gu attends through an avatar. After the public ceremony, Chengyi introduces Binglan to Gu as his father 202.

Upon inheriting the throne, Chengyi proclaims a general amnesty. His succession causes little disruption because he has already been handling court affairs during Haotian’s withdrawal from public life. He later personally leads a military campaign and unifies the Qian Yuan Realm 220 229 400.

Under his rule, Great Qian encourages cultivation through competitions and rewards, including medicinal pills supplied by Gu Yuanqing. His publicly known identity is Gu’s direct disciple, and that association discourages cultivators from violating Great Qian’s laws 220 231.

Establishing the Qian Yuan Sect

When six North Sea sects approach Qian Yuan Island, the elders appoint Chengyi sect master to represent their realm to the Cultivation World and Exquisite World. He accepts reluctantly: after decades on the throne, he hopes to leave rulership behind, cultivate freely, and search for his mother 400.

Chengyi receives the visitors without yielding to their accusations over Huang Wenzhong’s disappearance. In the ensuing confrontation, he defeats Meng Tingfeng through swordsmanship rather than overwhelming treasures, then captures the higher-realm Yue Heng with the Hun Tian Rope and Sky Burning Tower 401 402 403 404.

Afterward, he brings trusted Imperial Court disciples to the island and requires Nether God Blood Pacts to protect the interworld passage’s secrecy. He takes possession of the six sects’ tower ships, but stores them in miniature form because he lacks enough cultivators to operate them 407.

World Conflict and imperial defense

As the World Conflict approaches, Chengyi treats the protection of ordinary people as an imperial duty. He recognizes that even an army and defensive arrays cannot intercept every invading magic beast 464.

He volunteers to command the Qian Yuan Realm’s forces against the Slanting Moon World and leads the charge. His duel with Wang Zufeng exposes him to genuine killing intent beyond the pressure of trials and protected sparring. Although wounded and outmatched in cultivation, he refuses to retreat; Gu Yuanqing oversees the battle as a dangerous opportunity to temper him 468 470.

Chengyi also manages foreign relations and internal security. He welcomes the Purple Extreme Pavilion’s envoy and places the teleportation array under government supervision. Later, he orders a coordinated assault on the Ten Directions Misty Rain Tower residence, captures Lu Jingren, and confiscates the Tower’s goods. His failure to notice an accompanying Heavenly Human Split Soul becomes a lesson in the hidden methods of powerful cultivators 494 518 519.

Searching for his mother

After becoming a Heavenly Human, Chengyi leaves Qian Yuan and passes Great Qian’s throne to his eldest son, Li Guanrong. During his travels, he approaches the Sacred Heaven Sect intending to kill Zuo Qiu, but withdraws after sensing danger beyond his abilities. Learning that his mother is on the Outer Realm Battlefield, he changes course to find her 593 613 618.

Bai Xinglan pursues him to seize the Heaven Treading Immortal Steed. After twelve days of flight, Chengyi is trapped and nearly killed by Zhou Yishan. Gu Yuanqing’s concealed protection destroys the attackers, and Gu heals both his son and the steed. Chengyi nevertheless refuses to abandon his search 613.

Further pursuit by the Yunmeng Holy Land forces Chengyi to separate from his companion Qi Yu. He evades capture for more than a month and openly challenges Xiao Cang’s refusal to let evidence of the original attack be examined publicly 615 616.

Chengyi finally reunites with Miaoxuan after roughly two centuries apart. They spend several days talking, eating, and gradually becoming comfortable with one another. He tells her about his descendants and their flourishing homeland, but protects his father’s and the realm’s confidential matters. Before they part, Miaoxuan removes her imprint from the Nine Revolutions Spirit Nurturing Pearl, granting him full control 618.

Sect leadership and growing independence

Chengyi remains sect master after retiring from the throne. Under his administration, Heavenly Humans serve as elders, Void Heaven cultivators as hall masters, and Divine Platform cultivators as attendants. Former court officials join voluntarily, accepting responsibilities in exchange for sect support 637.

He arranges cultivation resources, oversees trade opportunities, and carries out his father’s strategic instructions. His victories over a Yin-Yang cultivator of Nether Sea Palace and an elder of Yan Shen Palace establish his own martial reputation, although outsiders still explain his achievements primarily through his parentage 650 672 688 697.

His technical knowledge does not always produce the right judgment. When confronting the Sacred Heaven Sect’s mountain-protection array, he becomes fixated on finding a flaw in a formation created by a Huntian expert. Gu Yuanqing recognizes that this approach has trapped him before he even attacks 729.

Over time, Chengyi delegates most routine sect business to Li Guanrong while continuing to consult trusted senior family members on decisions affecting the sect’s future. His eventual Chaos Heaven breakthrough allows the Qian Yuan Sect to stand among top-tier sects with less dependence on his parents, who entrust much of Gu Huai’an’s instruction to him 951 1046.

Another world and immortal ascension

In the Heavenly Canopy Dao Realm, Chengyi lives as an imperial grandson of Great Li and secretly gathers information about its powers and possible arrivals from the Fa Yuan Realm. He uses a demon assassination attempt as an opportunity to withdraw from excessive attention rather than expose his identity. He later reunites privately with his disguised father at the Mystic Sword Sect’s residence 1068.

Before his Immortal Tribulation, Chengyi arranges the Qian Yuan Sect’s affairs and spends time with his wives, children, and elders. After surviving the trial, he bows three times to Gu Yuanqing and ascends alongside the Heaven Treading Immortal Steed. His achievement makes him the Qian Yuan Sect’s third immortal within three thousand years 1097.

In the Immortal Realm, Miaoxuan arranges for him to join the Celestial Origin Immortal Palace because its opportunities suit his Wind, Thunder, and Fire foundation. He prepares records of the realm’s powers and customs for Gu Yuanqing, who later gives him a newly deduced cultivation method and teaches him for three days 1109 1111.

Appearance

At thirteen, Chengyi is described as a graceful, handsome youth who inherits Li Miaoxuan’s finest features 171.

  • Brows and eyes: Crescent-moon brows and star-like eyes 171.
  • Bearing: An elegant, upright presence compared to a jade tree in the wind, with an unusually heroic air 171.
  • Combat manifestation: Later appears in thunder-formed battle armor, surrounded by a true-fire domain strengthened by wind, resembling a descended Heavenly God 980.

Personality

Chengyi is polite and affectionate from childhood. Even after Gu Yuanqing’s growing power makes emperors and cultivators increasingly cautious around him, Chengyi remains the person who feels his father has changed little. His filial respect persists into adulthood, including strict observance of court etiquette during his reunion with Miaoxuan 157 171 618.

He takes rulership seriously without treating it as his ultimate ambition. As emperor, he considers his subjects’ safety his responsibility; as sect master, he accepts leadership because his realm needs a representative. Privately, he would rather become a carefree cultivator like his father 400 464.

His confidence conceals persistent insecurity about his parents’ extraordinary advancement. Despite exceptional aptitude and abundant resources, he repeatedly calls his own talent poor and resents being unable to help them. He wants the cultivation world to recognize “Li Chengyi,” not merely Gu Yuanqing’s or Li Miaoxuan’s son 614 848 936.

Comfort can weaken his motivation. After the World Conflict ends, Gu Yuanqing challenges him to explain why he cultivates and identifies his loss of purpose as a cause of stalled progress. Chengyi responds through self-examination, renewed goals, and eventually a calmer acceptance of the long road ahead 526 532 1111.

He is also capable of defiance and calculated restraint. He refuses Yunmeng’s attempt to control the examination of evidence, protects confidential family information from his own mother, and conceals his identity while gathering intelligence in Great Li 616 618 1068.

Abilities & Skills

Wind, Thunder, and Fire Daos

  • Builds his Void Heaven world from three complete Great Daos: Wind, Thunder, and Fire 460.
  • Uses wind to accelerate his flying sword and reinforce fire, while thunder supplies powerful offensive techniques 470 980.
  • At early Void Heaven, requires hand seals, True Words, and Spirit Formulas rather than releasing Dao techniques with a thought 470.
  • Eventually treats these three Daos as the sovereign principles of his cultivation, with other Dao insights serving subordinate roles 1073.

Swordsmanship

  • Trains under Gu Yuanqing and gains practical experience through Heavenly Ladder battles 403.
  • Uses lightning-wreathed flying-sword attacks with traces of the Demon Subduing Sword Art 403.
  • Defeats Meng Tingfeng despite slightly lower cultivation by reading weaknesses in his swordsmanship and changing between precise and forceful attacks 403.
  • His Lightning Law disrupts Yue Heng’s control of the Ruyi Ring, but swordsmanship alone cannot overcome Yue Heng’s Void Heaven Domain 404.

Divine Soul and Soul Seals

  • Possesses an unusually strong spiritual foundation from childhood, later supported by his mother’s soul-nurturing pearl 157 460.
  • Applies a soul-seal technique taught by Gu Yuanqing to Chang Xudong and reinforces it with an ancient oath to protect the Floating World’s secrets 310.
  • Continues sensing Chang across worlds, using that connection to confirm that the Sea Islands belong to the Cultivation World 310.
  • Uses the same connection to determine that North Spring Mountain is moving closer to the Sacred Heaven Sect 360.

Formations

  • Studies array formations under Gu Yuanqing and develops substantial knowledge and discernment 729.
  • Controls Qian Yuan Island’s Grand Formation while guarding against interference during the opening of Qingping Grotto-Heaven 710.
  • Cannot find an opening in the Sacred Heaven Sect’s earth-vein-linked mountain-protection array; his insistence on solving it technically becomes a tactical mistake 729.

Alchemy and Fire Cultivation

  • Receives Gu Yuanqing’s alchemy inheritance and specializes particularly in Fire and Thunder 711.
  • Successfully cultivates the Heavenly Human True Flame from the Golden Palace Qi Huang Dan Jing 711.
  • Practices with mid- and low-grade heaven-tier Dao Souls supplied by his father. His intended next fire technique, Two Forms Tribulation Fire, requires gathering tribulation qi during the Yin-Yang Great Tribulation 711.

Ancient Realm Techniques

  • Learns Ancient Coin condensation and rapid escape methods during his first visit to the Ancient Realm 524.
  • Studies Dao-Soul fishing and refinement at the Boundless River; initially loses catches repeatedly before improving through practice 526 528.
  • Dao-Soul refinement can cloud his memories temporarily. Gu Yuanqing uses recovery time, Red Dust Wine, and sleep to clear lingering influences 530 531.
  • Must protect his divine soul carefully: a serious injury in the Ancient Realm could permanently end his cultivation prospects 524.

Leadership and Strategy

  • Commands military campaigns, rallies armies, and coordinates operations that account for civilian safety 229 468 518.
  • Uses the Realm Token to disrupt hostile formations and support allied fighters 518.
  • Manages diplomacy, trade, interworld secrecy, and sect organization 407 494 637 697.
  • Recognizes when weaker disciples should withdraw so that they do not hinder Gu Yuanqing against a stronger enemy 899.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Nine Revolutions Spirit Nurturing Pearl — Treasure placed in his Divine Court by Li Miaoxuan. Its premature awakening traps his childhood consciousness; later, it nurtures and protects his divine soul, rendering Yue Heng’s soul attacks ineffective. Miaoxuan eventually removes her imprint and grants Chengyi full control 157 404 618.
  • Hun Tian Rope — Heavenly Human Treasure given by Gu Yuanqing. Binds Yue Heng before his imprisonment; against Wang Zufeng, its restraints are broken by the opponent’s intensified power 297 404 470.
  • Sky Burning Tower — Heavenly Human Treasure used for confinement and strange-fire attacks. Chengyi captures Yue Heng inside it and can release its full power after attaining Void Heaven 404 470.
  • Flying sword — Used with Lightning Law and wind control for rapid, technically precise attacks 403 470.
  • Heaven Gate Token — One of the treasures passed down by Gu Yuanqing after Chengyi’s third-layer Divine Platform breakthrough 297.
  • Realm Token — Supports Great Qian’s control of the realm and weakens the Misty Rain Tower residence’s defensive formation 518.
  • Protective jade plaques and tokens — Gu Yuanqing supplies safeguards ranging from Heavenly Human to Chaos Heaven power. During the Bai Clan pursuit, Chengyi has only three Chaos Heaven plaques; his own cultivation limits how effectively he can direct their divine abilities 533 613.
  • Honored-guest token — Gift from Illusionary Spirit Sect Master Lu Zeyu during Chengyi’s visit with his father 530.
  • Heavenly Dao Scripture, both volumes — Entrusted to him along with responsibility for related affairs. Gu Yuanqing warns him to avoid the dangerous Dao Palace 724.
  • Ten Directions Token — Left to Chengyi by Gu Yuanqing. Its power is restricted to the Exquisite Realm Domain and reaches its fullest potential when combined with the Realm Tokens 994.

Relationships

  • Gu Yuanqing — Father and principal cultivation mentor. Their relationship combines affection, filial formality, rigorous instruction, and Gu’s persistent concern for Chengyi’s safety 158 614 724 1111.
  • Li Miaoxuan — Mother. Finding her is an early motive for cultivation; their reunion is initially formal but warms through shared meals and conversation. Chengyi encourages contact between his parents without revealing confidences that are not his to share 297 562 618.
  • Li Haotian — Maternal grandfather and predecessor on Great Qian’s throne. Raises Chengyi after Miaoxuan leaves, initially opposes Gu’s claim to guide his upbringing, and later supports his cultivation and sect leadership 158 220 400.
  • Li Shi’an — Great-grandfather and trusted senior adviser. Helps bring the unconscious child to Gu Yuanqing and later publicly supports his authority as Qian Yuan Sect Master 157 401 494.
  • Chen Binglan — Wife, daughter of Chen Ao, and empress of Great Qian. Supports his cultivation but fears the dangers of his breakthroughs and the possibility of permanent separation after his ascension 202 460 1097.
  • Little Fox — Childhood playmate and later intimate companion. Known as Su Xuexin and later Su Xin’er in the supplied accounts, she grows close to Chen Binglan and hopes eventually to follow Chengyi into the Immortal Realm 158 360 528 1097.
  • Li Guanrong — Eldest son and imperial successor. Handles government during Chengyi’s absences, inherits the throne when Chengyi leaves Qian Yuan, and later manages much of the sect’s routine business 528 618 1046.
  • Gu Huai’an — Younger brother. Chengyi offers to search for him in another world and is later entrusted with much of his routine instruction 951 1068.
  • Heaven Treading Immortal Steed / Little White — Mount and trusted traveling companion. Repeatedly uses spatial abilities to help Chengyi escape; Chengyi stops it from exhausting its bloodline beyond safety. It accompanies him in his immortal ascension 613 615 1097.
  • Qi Yu — Traveling friend and rogue cultivator. Separates from Chengyi rather than become a liability against Yin-Yang pursuers 614 615 616.
  • Zuo Qiu — Target of the Great Qian family’s blood feud. Chengyi wants revenge to be taken by their own hands, but initially abandons an attempt when he senses danger at the Sacred Heaven Sect 310 613 720.
  • Lu Zeyu, Yi Yunbo, and Qiu Ziqing — Connections introduced through Gu Yuanqing. Welcome Chengyi at the Illusionary Spirit Sect and offer assistance to future Great Qian cultivators at the Boundless River 530.
