Ch. 1Heavenly Dragon
Chapter summary
Plot and events
- The Clear Radiance Mountains are notorious for lethal miasma and dangerous exotic beasts, but their valuable resources continue to draw hunters.
- Zhao Er checks a hidden trap and collects eight Golden-Clawed Heavenly Dragon centipedes, handling them barehanded despite their venom. He refreshes the bait and covers the trap again.
- A mysterious system records his work: he gains experience in traps and poison resistance. His Poison Sand Palm practice has left his skin blackened, but his growing resistance is easing its side effects.
- Zhao Er plans to dry and sell his accumulated centipedes to raise enough money to begin condensing his qi and blood.
- After carefully making his way out of the woods, he hears movement behind a tree and instantly draws a concealed weapon. The chapter ends on this apparent threat.
Character development
- Zhao Er is methodical, cautious, and unusually composed around danger, as shown by his precise trapping and calm handling of poisonous centipedes.
- A transmigrant from another world, he once hoped to become wealthy, but has come to see martial strength as essential in this violent age. After months of preparation, he is pursuing an unconventional route into martial cultivation, relying partly on his mysterious system.
- His ambition is practical as well as martial: he is using his trapping work to fund his first step toward cultivation.
Themes
- Risk and reward: The mountains’ dangers are worth confronting because rare creatures can bring substantial wealth.
- Strength and social barriers: Martial resources are monopolized, making advancement exceptionally difficult for commoners.
- Adaptation and perseverance: Zhao Er turns hazardous conditions and an unorthodox skill set into a possible path forward.
- Power’s costs: His Poison Sand Palm practice causes poisoning, while his resistance gradually mitigates the harm.
Character interactions
- Zhao Er has no direct interaction with another person in this chapter. His encounters are with the environment, his trap and its venomous catch; the unexplained movement at the end sets up a likely confrontation.
