Background / History
Reputation and Recruitment
Pei was widely known around the Heavenly Sword Sect as a rootless drunkard who nevertheless insisted on cultivating. Her dependence on alcohol attracted ridicule, but she watched cultivators with genuine longing for their freedom to fly and travel the world 24.
Li Shouyi approached her while searching for exceptionally untalented disciples. She initially dismissed his offer as a scam, pointing out that everyone knew she lacked a spiritual root. Seeing Lin Shuishui and Su Wan’er demonstrate their poor roots and Foundation Establishment cultivation persuaded her to reconsider 24.
She formally became Li’s third disciple beneath an ancient tree. His system initially judged her a “good-for-nothing seen only once in a thousand years,” offering him a reward if she made no progress for seven days. Su welcomed her with clothes and wine, while Li planned to keep her intoxicated rather than cultivate her potential 25.
Heavenly Sword Sect Selection Trial
One-Eye’s claim that bad luck followed Pei made other contestants avoid her. Believing she had become a burden, she offered to let Li abandon her. He instead reaffirmed his acceptance, gave her wine, and promised she could drink her fill every day 26.
His remark that each sip represented a different stretch of life inspired her enlightenment. While intoxicated, Pei witnessed countless versions of herself living as beggars, merchants, emperors, and other people. She then developed a cultivation method that bypassed her missing spiritual root 26 27.
After waking to find her master, senior sisters, and other contestants unconscious, Pei continued alone, intending to win and obtain help. She unknowingly crossed trials whose dangers Zhuo Yifan had accidentally disabled, then took the Shadow-Bearing Sword from the final platform. Its removal collapsed the secret realm and expelled everyone outside, leaving her in first place 27 28.
Pei initially refused to surrender the sword. Once Li negotiated compensation with Heavenly Sword Sect Master Zhang Daoling, however, she trusted her master and relinquished it. The agreement allowed her to choose another treasure from the sect later 28 29.
Founding the Sect and Taking a Disciple
Pei accompanied Li to Good Fortune Mountain and participated in founding the Useless Talent Sect. Still adjusting to the group’s chaotic routines, she asked about practical matters such as identification tokens, but soon left to satisfy her craving for wine 33 34.
At a tavern, Li promised to pay for all her wine, then slipped away while she packed it into her Spatial Ring. With no money to settle the bill, Pei offered to teach the proprietor, Zhang Sanpang, cultivation. She proved her abilities by carrying him into the sky and brought him back to meet Li 34 35.
Learning that Zhang had been born missing one hun soul and one po soul, Pei sought Su’s help to buy medicine. She insisted that her promise to accept him as a disciple was genuine. After Su secured Soulwood roots for two million spirit stones, Pei used them to complete Zhang’s soul 37 38 39.
Heart Demon Encounter
A Heart Demon posing as “Doraemon” offered to fulfill Pei’s wish for fine liquor. It supplied a bottle of “1982 Sprite,” which she drank before angrily identifying it as liquor watered down until no alcohol remained. Her Flicker Strike injured the demon, and the encounter deepened her Dao comprehension 48.
Li subsequently punished all three senior disciples with three hundred strokes each. Pei found having her mouth sealed—and therefore being unable to drink for three days—especially miserable 48.
Appearance
- Large, expressive eyes and delicate brows are specifically noted 35 39.
- At her introduction, she carries a crystal-clear liquor bottle and gives off an overpowering smell of alcohol 24.
- She wears clothes supplied by Su Wan’er after joining Li’s disciples 25 26.
- Li describes her tear-streaked face as resembling pear blossoms drenched in rain 28.
Personality
Pei’s swaggering introduction conceals a reserved, vulnerable disposition. Once accepted by Li, she becomes noticeably shy; renewed mockery makes her lower her head, and rumors about her supposed bad luck prompt her to offer to leave rather than burden him 25 26.
Her attachment to wine is both a daily need and the foundation of her Dao. She becomes physically uncomfortable without it, repeatedly reminds Li of his promise to provide it, and reacts violently to what she believes is adulterated liquor 24 34 48.
Despite her impulsiveness, Pei takes promises seriously. Her attempt to recruit Zhang Sanpang begins as a solution to a wine debt, but she follows through by seeking treatment for his damaged soul and firmly affirming that she intends to teach him 35 37 38.
She grows more cheerful among her companions, joining their teasing and celebrating their successes. Her possessiveness over wine remains comically strong: she stops Su from giving Bao’er alcohol because she does not want another future competitor for it 30 39.
Abilities & Skills
Drunken Life, Dreaming Death
Pei describes her Dao as turning herself into a furnace capable of refining “all things beneath heaven.” Its demonstrated foundation is refining spiritual energy into wine that nourishes her soul and body 27 28.
- Rootless cultivation: Digests spiritual energy instead of relying on a spiritual root to retain it 27.
- Internal refinement: Uses her dantian as the vat, flesh as the lid, and spiritual sense as the guide 27.
- Life visions: Experiences different lives while intoxicated, gaining insights from their contrasting circumstances 27.
- Flight: Her Dao provides an integrated method of flying without separate instruction 34 35.
- Advancement through understanding: Improves by deepening comprehension of her personal Dao 34 48.
- Documented interruption: Her initial ascent stops because of external interference, not because she reaches the method’s limit 27.
Flicker Strike
A combat technique she uses against the Heart Demon after drinking its supposed liquor 48.
- Sends the demon flying from the strange space and leaves half its face caved in 48.
- Its underlying mechanics and other applications are not explained.
Soul-Restoration Technique
Pei administers the Soulwood-root treatment that repairs Zhang Sanpang’s incomplete soul 39.
- Ignites the root with magical power and guides its smoke into Zhang 39.
- The smoke forms replacements for his missing soul components; she then presses his completed soul back into his body 39.
- The restoration depends on the purchased medicinal root rather than a demonstrated ability to repair souls unaided.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Liquor bottle — Carries one at her introduction and drinks from it while speaking with Li 24.
- Li Shouyi’s wine — A welcoming gift whose changing flavors help trigger her Dao awakening 26.
- Spatial Ring — Uses it to pack wine at Zhang Sanpang’s tavern 34.
- Shadow-Bearing Sword — Heavenly Sword Sect ancestral sword obtained in the selection trial. It does not resist her touch, though it can injure unacknowledged handlers. Later returned in exchange for the right to select another treasure 28 29.
- Soulwood roots — Purchased with Su Wan’er’s funds and consumed in restoring Zhang Sanpang’s soul 38 39.
Relationships
- Li Shouyi — Master. Gives her hope of cultivating, defends her from mockery, and inspires her wine-based Dao. She trusts his decisions, despite his deceptive schemes and punishments 24 25 26 29 34 48.
- Su Wan’er — Second senior sister. Welcomes and defends Pei, catches her when she becomes drunk, and finances Zhang Sanpang’s treatment. Pei gratefully hugs and kisses her after the auction purchase 25 26 39.
- Lin Shuishui — Eldest senior sister. Welcomes Pei into the group and accompanies her in helping their newly recruited disciples 25 37 38.
- Zhang Sanpang — Disciple and former tavern proprietor. Pei recruits him after being left with a wine bill, then fulfills her promise by repairing his incomplete soul 35 38 39.
- One-Eye — Repeated tormentor. Mocks her and spreads rumors that she brings bad luck; Li later makes having him slapped a condition of returning the Shadow-Bearing Sword 25 26 29.
- Zhuo Yifan — Heavenly Sword Sect trial official. His accidental disabling of the hazards enables her easy passage; afterward, he unsuccessfully asks her to return the sword 28.
- Zhang Daoling — Heavenly Sword Sect master. Negotiates the sword’s return and promises Pei a replacement treasure of her choosing 29.
Notable Quotes
“Turn oneself into a furnace and refine all things beneath heaven.” 28
“Enough, spare me the nonsense. I, Pei Zhujiu, keep my word. If I said I’d take you as my disciple, then I will.” 38
“If there’s one thing I hate most in this life, it’s people who water down liquor.” 48
Trivia
- Pei grew up hearing stories of the Wine Sword Immortal and reciting that figure’s declarations while drinking. This makes finding a sword at the trial’s end particularly exciting to her 28.
- After her enlightenment, Li’s system reverses its assessment, calling her a “favored daughter of heaven rarely seen in a thousand years” 25 28.
- She repeatedly answers “Mine” when Zhuo Yifan asks her to return the Shadow-Bearing Sword 28.
- She calls Su Wan’er “Eldest Senior Sister” in gratitude for the Soulwood-root purchase, although Lin Shuishui actually holds that seniority 39.
