Background / History
Rejection and Discipleship
Lin Shuishui is introduced as the Lin Household’s eldest young lady, notorious for loving sleep more than life itself. Before arriving at Cloud Cliff Sect, she had already undergone testing at several sects and become accustomed to rejection 1.
At Cloud Cliff Sect’s recruitment ceremony, she misses her turn because she is sleeping beneath a tree. Li Shouyi persuades the examiners to give her a chance, arguing that reaching the sect despite her overwhelming drowsiness demonstrates sincerity. When her Void Spiritual Root leads to another rejection, he accepts her as his first disciple. She falls asleep halfway through her formal bow 1.
Li gives her an enchanted white jade pillow and encourages her to pursue cultivation through sleep. His private intention is to prevent her from improving and secure rewards from his Mediocre Talent System. Lin instead feels understood for the first time and resolves to repay him by achieving something remarkable through sleeping 3.
Her subsequent breakthrough overturns his expectations. The system recognizes her potential to become a Great Sage, and she begins cultivating at extraordinary speed while asleep. When Li scolds her, she assumes she has not worked hard enough and commits herself to even greater effort 4 5.
Newcomers’ Tournament
Lin’s sleeping habits make her a target of public ridicule, including an incident in which she falls asleep in her food. Su Wan’er defends her and later enrolls them both in the newcomers’ competition, interpreting Lin’s suggestion that their master sometimes means the opposite of what he says as encouragement to act 6 9.
In her first match, Lin survives an earth cultivator’s Rockfall through the Thorn Armor supplied by Su. Its reflected attack defeats him, prompting Sect Master Tang Que to prohibit armor exceeding Foundation Establishment capabilities 11 12.
Against Li Zuoshou, Lin’s dreamscape ability allows her to escape a seemingly lethal sword strike without physical injury. She then uses True Meaning of Dreams to trap his soul in an illusion that feels like ten years of helpless defeat. She releases him afterward, explaining that he has suffered no actual physical harm 14 15.
Lin wins her semifinal against Lu Renjia. Su concedes the final rather than fight her senior sister, making Lin the tournament champion 18 19.
Leaving Cloud Cliff Sect
When Wu Dalang arrives to kill Li Shouyi, the sect leadership and other disciples abandon him. Lin forces herself to remain awake, rejects the sect master’s demand that she leave Li’s side, and offers to hold Wu off with Su so their master can escape. Their tournament placements complete a hidden system mission that grants Li temporary power to survive the confrontation 20.
After Li defeats Wu, Lin suggests establishing their own sect. She leaves Cloud Cliff Sect with Li and Su and later participates in the founding of the Useless Talent Sect on Good Fortune Mountain 22 33.
Bao’er and Later Cultivation
Lin meets Bao’er while eating at a restaurant and takes her as a disciple. She identifies the girl’s damaged spiritual root as potentially repairable with Heavenly Flow Essence and joins her fellow senior disciples in seeking remedies. Meeting Bao’er also brings Lin new insight into Dreamscape True Understanding 36 37 40.
Her constitution prevents her from managing sect affairs, so Li assigns that responsibility to Su Wan’er instead. Lin subsequently undergoes another breakthrough and tribulation, with the lightning falling on Li rather than injuring her 40 41.
During a later enlightenment opportunity, an inner demon searches for desires it can exploit. Lin offers only two: to sleep and to stop being scolded by her master. Unable to work with either, the demon kicks her out of its realm 47.
Appearance
Lin is repeatedly described as an exceptional beauty with a youthful, baby-faced appearance 1 20.
- Eyes: Large, expressive eyes, usually bleary from sleep 1 14 47.
- Complexion: Fair skin 4.
- Habitual expression: Drowsy or apparently blank, even when responding to important news 14 37.
- Sleeping mannerisms: Drools, snores faintly, and can fall asleep standing up 1 8 23.
Personality
Lin is laid-back and strongly motivated by sleep and food, particularly roast chicken. Even after reaching Foundation Establishment, she continues visiting the dining hall out of habit. Her prayer at the sect’s founding asks for long mornings and roast chicken rather than prestige or power 6 33.
Her gratitude toward Li Shouyi is sincere. Having previously been scolded for sleeping, she regards his acceptance as recognition of her worth. She repeatedly interprets his displeasure as evidence that she must cultivate harder, and her loyalty ultimately outweighs her fear of a far stronger enemy 3 5 20.
Despite her sleepy demeanor, Lin can be persuasive and mischievous. She helps Su reflect on their master’s apparent sacrifices, but also invents explanations for his anger to preserve her dignity as the eldest senior sister. She privately recognizes how easily Su believes her improvisations 8 15.
Abilities & Skills
Dreamscape True Understanding
Lin’s principal cultivation ability connects the Sleeping Dao with accelerated cultivation and movement between dreams and reality 4 5 14.
- Dream cultivation: Cultivates a thousand times faster than an ordinary person while dreaming 5.
- Dream–reality switching: Can freely switch between reality and dreams; Li Zuoshou’s sword attacks her dreamscape rather than injuring her physical body 14.
- Instinctive use: Her first demonstrated defensive application occurs without a developed understanding of other combat techniques 14.
- Sleep requirement: Awakening the ability intensifies her innate drowsiness. By the confrontation with Wu Dalang, she needs twenty-three hours of sleep per day to avoid feeling sleepy 20.
True Meaning of Dreams
An offensive dream technique demonstrated against Li Zuoshou 15.
- Envelops the opponent in light and traps their soul in an illusory world 15.
- Distorts perceived time: an instant outside feels like ten years to Li Zuoshou 15.
- Gives Lin overwhelming control within the illusion, where his attacks and resistance accomplish nothing 15.
- Leaves the opponent outwardly motionless; Lin can release the trapped soul and wake them 15.
Void Spiritual Root
Her root leaks away most of the spiritual energy she gathers, but the energy she retains is exceptionally pure 1 5.
- Limitation: Energy loss slows her advancement despite her extraordinary dream-cultivation speed 5.
- Advantage: The retained qi is purer than Li Shouyi’s; he identifies this purity as a foundation for fighting above one’s realm 5.
- Manifestation: Appears pure white like jade, without any coloration, when she reveals it to Pei Zhujiu 24.
Immovable Wisdom King Form
A mental cultivation technique comprehended alongside Su Wan’er after hearing Li Shouyi’s advice on enduring insults 11.
- Strengthens and solidifies the soul 11.
- Prevents evil from drawing near, shatters illusions, and neutralizes beguiling sounds 11.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- White jade pillow — An enchanted gift from Li Shouyi, presented as her life-bound treasure for cultivating through sleep. She sleeps while holding it 3 4.
- Basic protective armor — Acquired by Li using sect Merit Points for the newcomers’ tournament 10 11.
- Thorn Armor — Supplied by Su Wan’er. Its defenses cannot be breached by attacks below Golden Core, and it reflects the earth cultivator’s strike to secure Lin’s first tournament victory. Subsequently barred from tournament use by the new armor restriction 11 12.
Relationships
- Li Shouyi — Master. Accepts her despite repeated rejection elsewhere and unintentionally enables her extraordinary growth. Lin remains loyal when Cloud Cliff Sect abandons him and proposes that he found his own sect 1 3 20 22.
- Su Wan’er / Shen Wan’er — Junior sister; called Shen Wan’er in the early chapters and Su Wan’er later. Defends Lin from ridicule, supplies her armor, and concedes the championship to her. Lin frequently helps—or misleads—her in interpreting their master’s words 2 6 8 15 19.
- Pei Zhujiu — Third junior sister. Lin welcomes her politely, shares in the group’s teasing, and accompanies her when bringing prospective disciples back to Good Fortune Mountain 25 30 37.
- Bao’er — Disciple, met at a restaurant. Lin seeks a remedy for her damaged spiritual root; Bao’er later protects her sleeping master from disturbance 37 40.
- Li Zuoshou — Tournament opponent. Lin defeats him through a soul-trapping dream illusion and personally releases him afterward 14 15.
Notable Quotes
“Master must have faced enormous pressure to take us as his disciples. So we have to work even harder if we don’t want to disappoint him.” 8
“Junior Sister and I aren’t cowards who cling to life like you! Without Master, we wouldn’t be who we are today, so we’re definitely staying with him.” 20
“Master, run! Junior Sister and I will hold him off.” 20
Trivia
- The system’s description of Lin as a future “Sleeping Emperor” is a prediction of her potential, not a realm or title she has already attained 4.
- When counting Spirit Stones, she measures their value as “one roast chicken, two roast chickens” 34.
- Bao’er begins displaying similar excessive sleepiness after becoming Lin’s disciple, although Li Shouyi is unsure whether the connection is responsible 42.
