Background / History
Aequus enters the story as an Elite Camp trainee specializing in body arts and physical conditioning. He and Milers surpass Cotton after the latter becomes complacent following his acquisition of a Devil Fruit. Their strength earns them permission to train separately from the main class, and Aequus uses a gravity chamber to temper his body 6 11 13.
He welcomes Randall as a fellow body-arts enthusiast and proposes training together. Although initially much stronger, Aequus becomes one of Randall’s regular sparring partners and witnesses him rapidly surpass both himself and Milers 6 12 24.
After accumulating merit through pirate hunting, Aequus becomes Randall’s adjutant. At G-1, his responsibilities extend well beyond combat: he handles paperwork, organizes soldiers, investigates threats, and gathers intelligence on Randall’s orders 105 184 251 264 433.
Appearance
- Human form: A hulking, powerfully muscled man whose size can block the sunlight when he stands beside Randall 19 142.
- Face: Exceptionally ferocious and memorable. Crocodile immediately recognizes him as the Marine who summoned him, while hostile soldiers and pirates find his glare intimidating 144 265 442.
- Smile: Often displays gleaming white teeth; even his friendly smile is described as frightening 142.
- Steel Ape form: Initially depicted as a ten-foot-tall gorilla with coarse dark-gray hair, fangs, and enormous arms. A later transformation reaches five meters in height 343 389.
- Hybrid form: A three-meter-tall humanoid with a bare chest, enlarged muscles, black-haired arms, protruding canine teeth, and a black tail 442.
Personality
Despite his frightening appearance, Aequus is friendly and kind-hearted. He readily connects with Randall through their shared enthusiasm for physical combat. Randall explicitly recognizes that certain missions would be emotionally difficult for him, and Aequus’s concern for endangered comrades repeatedly outweighs concern for his own safety 6 184 336.
He is intensely competitive and proud of his training achievements. Randall’s teasing can provoke furious retaliation, but being surpassed also excites him: after discovering that Randall has overtaken his raw strength, Aequus becomes more eager to fight rather than withdrawing. He eventually accepts that catching Randall is unrealistic while continuing to measure himself against Milers 11 24 29.
His sense of responsibility can become destructive guilt. After the assassination attack on G-1, he trains beyond his limits and seeks a Devil Fruit to become stronger quickly. Zephyr worries about his impatience, while Randall reassures him that the casualties were not his fault 294 295.
Aequus also has a dry, long-suffering sense of humor about his workload. He complains about paperwork and extra assignments but generally accepts them, even joking about administrative duties immediately after being revived 264 291 474.
Abilities & Skills
Body Arts and Physical Strength
Aequus fights primarily with his fists, relying on physical conditioning, force, and close-range pressure 6 11.
- Stops a massive, metal-tusked boar’s charge, lifts it, leaps while holding it, and throws it into the ground before defeating it 15.
- Initially defeats Randall through superior strength and defense, despite Randall’s newly developed techniques and rapid recovery 12.
- In Steel Ape form, delivers blows powerful enough to threaten a top-tier Vice Admiral, although Randall still withstands them effortlessly 343.
- Combines speed with strength in hybrid form; his charge against King leaves a deep crater where he launched himself 442.
Six Powers and Life Return
Aequus knows the Six Powers and has mastered Life Return 11 12.
- Iron Body: Braces against Randall’s kick, although the impact still sends him flying 24.
- Shave: Attempts to use it during the assassination attack, but poisoning and existing injuries prevent him from moving effectively 289.
- Geppo: Arrests his fall just before entering the sea during his fight with Shanks and returns to the deck 389.
- Recovery: Heals a waist wound during the pirate-tide battle and resumes fighting; this occurs before his documented acquisition of the Steel Ape fruit 335 343.
Armament Haki
Aequus uses Armament Haki for full-body protection, hardened punches, emission, and attacks that transmit force beyond an intervening obstacle 249 334 383 443.
- Shatters three Armament-coated bullets with three successive punches 385.
- Blocks King’s shock wave with hardened arms without serious injury, though the impact pushes him back several dozen meters 442.
- Destroys the interior and rear of a large boulder while leaving its front surface intact 383.
- Limit: Randall’s sustained, multidirectional light barrage breaks through his full-body coating 249.
- Limit: His projected Haki cannot halt Dwarf’s contaminating black tide 334.
Observation Haki
Aequus uses Observation Haki to monitor combatants and recognize danger to his allies 336.
- Detects Christa’s weakening presence while surrounded by pirates 336.
- Limit: Shanks conceals his presence from Observation Haki, preventing Aequus from tracking his movements and enabling a precise kidney strike 394 397.
Steel Ape Ancient Zoan
The Steel Ape fruit suits Aequus’s strength-based fighting style and grants powerful beast and hybrid forms 343 442.
- A gorilla-form strike sends Shanks flying before Shanks escalates the fight 389.
- His awakened endurance allows wounds inflicted by Shanks to heal repeatedly, making a prolonged fight difficult for the swordsman 394.
- Wounds from King’s flaming bullets heal immediately 443.
- Limit: Shanks’s Conqueror-infused sword attacks still inflict severe injuries and can briefly incapacitate him 389 394.
- Limit: Falling into the sea would leave him helpless; he narrowly avoids doing so with Geppo 389.
Named Fist Techniques
- Iron Fist: Adamant — Compresses a tremendous amount of Armament Haki into his right fist while confronting King’s homing fire dragon 443.
- Iron Fist: Level mountains and seas — Releases a wave that passes through the fire dragon and strikes King directly, sending him flying 443.
Administration, Intelligence, and Instruction
- Handles the Base Chief’s paperwork when Randall abandons the task 264 364.
- Checks the battleship’s engine and assembles the Randall Unit during the unexplained voyage delay 251.
- Identifies the assassins’ employer as the Big Hand Funeral Home and follows up through Marine intelligence 293.
- Receives responsibility for locating information on the remaining Road Poneglyphs 433.
- Is assigned to teach Ace Haki 474.
Relationships
- Randall — Friend, former rival, commanding officer, and principal training partner. Randall revives him after poisoning, supports his search for a suitable Devil Fruit, and repeatedly entrusts him with administration and intelligence work 6 184 291 294 433.
- Milers — Fellow Elite Camp standout and competitive friend. Aequus initially wins only one of their bouts, with his subsequent defeats described as narrow; their rivalry continues after Randall surpasses them both 11 29 105.
- Christa — Close comrade who calls him “Brother Aequus.” She attempts to shield him from an assassin and helps identify the poisoned needle; he later risks his life repeatedly to protect her in battle 289 291 336 337.
- Zephyr — Elite Camp instructor who recognizes his promise and remains concerned about his later desire for rapid strength gains 23 26 295.
- Shuzo — His initial dedicated Armament Haki instructor during the top-three trainees’ reward training 28.
- Caris — Fellow member of Randall’s circle and special-training group. Aequus tactfully leaves her and Randall alone when she brings desserts to the office 364 383.
- Ace — Assigned Haki pupil. Aequus resents the additional workload but accepts the responsibility 474.
- Asfer — Former G-1 Base Chief who mistakes him for Randall’s bodyguard. Aequus fiercely rejects Asfer’s betrayal and attempt to recruit him into surrender 264 269 270.
- Brick — Fellow special-training participant. Aequus recommends including him partly to share the ordeal, only to be surprised by Brick’s sincere gratitude 278.

- Receives three months of focused training as one of the assessment’s top three performers 26 28 29.
- Attempts to reproduce Milers’s pressure-induced breakthrough by having Randall beat him, but gains only pain rather than a breakthrough 29.
Randall’s Adjutant
- Prepares a battleship for Randall and Christa, then summons Crocodile by Den Den Mushi; Crocodile initially mistakes him for the officer in charge 142 144.

- Serves as the target for Randall’s destructive light-attack experiments on Fish-Man Island 249 250.
- Defends Randall’s authority during the Pirate Alliance crisis and remains loyal when nearly all the other Marines surrender 265 270.
G-1 Assassination Attack and Revival

- Receives a poisoned needle in his neck; Randall returns to find that his heart has stopped 289 290.
- Is revived when Randall drains Life Force from a Zoan assassin, transfers it into him, and removes the needle identified by Christa 291.
- Apologizes for failing to protect the base and becomes consumed by guilt over the twenty-one dead soldiers 293 294.
- Requests a Zoan Devil Fruit as a path to greater strength. Randall agrees to search, but Zephyr has no suitable rare fruit available 294 295.
Pirate-Tide Battle

- Battles Shanks near G-1, relying on regeneration to endure repeated sword wounds. Shanks counters with Conqueror’s Haki and concealment from Observation Haki 389 394.
- Reports that Shanks’s concealment technique is the decisive obstacle; his belief that he could otherwise win by attrition is his own assessment 397.
Road Poneglyph Operations and Later Service
- Accepts Randall’s order to investigate the remaining Road Poneglyphs after Randall returns injured from confronting Imu 433.
- Faces King, withstands his attacks, and sends him flying through his own fire dragon; Christa then strikes King with lightning 442 443.

Trivia
- His hybrid form has a tail because he feels that it should, despite the passage explicitly noting that the gorilla form has none 442.
- Asfer’s belief that Aequus is Randall’s powerful bodyguard arises partly from seeing him handle paperwork and judging both men by their appearances 264 265.
- After his revival, he immediately tries to hold Randall to a panicked promise never to make him handle paperwork again. He is nevertheless shown doing the Base Chief’s work later 291 364.
