Background / History
Marine career and personal tragedy
Zephyr trained the future Three Admirals, and more than half of the Marines’ officers came through the Elite Camp. A third of the Vice Admirals present during Randall’s promotion debate had studied under him, giving his choice of a personal disciple considerable institutional weight 4 86.
Pirates murdered Zephyr’s family. His grief later shapes a painful conversation with Sengoku about whether maintaining stability at sea can justify denying someone revenge. Randall subsequently suspects World Government involvement in the family’s deaths, but this remains an inference rather than a confirmed revelation 320 344 382.
Recruiting and training Randall
Zephyr personally admits Randall to the Elite Camp after recognizing his unusual power and learning ability. Although Tsuru finds no records of Randall’s past, Zephyr trusts his judgment and questions Randall about justice before teaching him the Six Powers 4 8.
He approves of Randall’s insistence on judging evil for himself, while stressing that justice requires the strength to enforce it. Their first lesson becomes a combat demonstration, during which Randall rapidly copies the Six Powers and develops variations of his own 9 10.
After the camp assessment, Zephyr gives Randall, Milers, and Aequus three months of personal instruction. He tailors their Haki training to their existing abilities: Randall studies Observation Haki, while the other two begin with Armament Haki under Shuzo 26 28 29.
When Randall’s Qi interferes with awakening Observation Haki, Zephyr devises a punishing method intended to exhaust that substitute sense. Randall awakens the real ability after ten days, then practices blindfolded evasion against Zephyr’s Armament-coated pebbles 28 29.
Dangerous missions and the Bullet encounter
Zephyr initially trusts his students to complete their graduation missions. When Sengoku belatedly reports that Texas is far stronger than his bounty suggests, Zephyr becomes alarmed but ultimately chooses not to recall Randall, believing forced protection could undermine his confidence 32 33.
He later follows Randall’s nearly burned-away Vivre Card into the New World. Finding him unconscious beneath the sea after his defeat by Douglas Bullet, Zephyr breaks open the water with a punch, dives down, and rescues him from within a white energy barrier 73.
After Randall recovers, Zephyr reassures him before scolding him for entering the New World without warning. He tests Randall’s transformed body in another destructive sparring match, then supports his request to join the planned operation against Bullet. Sengoku initially objects, prompting Zephyr to defend Randall’s resilience and readiness 74 75 76 77 81.
Supporting Randall against the Emperors
Zephyr helps defend Marine Headquarters when Kaido attacks, blasting the falling dragon away before his enormous body can crash into the populated base 228.
When Randall seeks revenge against Charlotte Linlin for the deaths of twenty-one Marines and the danger to Aequus and Christa, Zephyr offers assistance rather than attempting to stop him. He condemns Sengoku’s willingness to accept those losses for political stability 307 308.
Sengoku’s refusal to answer whether he would similarly have obstructed Zephyr’s own revenge wounds their friendship. Tsuru comforts Zephyr by pointing out that Randall would have acted without hesitation. After Randall kills Linlin, Zephyr recalls him to Headquarters and reports the victory with astonishment and pride 320 323.
Field training and medical treatment
Randall joins Zephyr’s month-long internship with 328 cadets, intending to prevent the arm-loss disaster he remembers from the original timeline. That remembered event involved Whitebeard II, Zephyr’s age and asthma, and the deaths of nearly all the students; it is not an injury Zephyr is shown already having in this story 344 345.
During the voyage, Zephyr openly acknowledges that Randall has surpassed him. He encourages Ain to test herself against Randall and later praises the cadets for standing together against One-Eyed Dragon despite being badly outmatched 345 346 351.
On the return journey, a coughing fit interrupts Zephyr’s attack while he is protecting the cadets from Buckingham Stussy. Randall subsequently forces him into medical care despite his protests. After waking, Zephyr admits that the voyage frightened him and that, without Randall, he might not have survived 354 356.
Semi-retirement and World Government coercion
By Chapter 501, Zephyr is semi-retired and leaves routine instruction to other teachers. His health is substantially better because Randall previously insisted on treatment. During a visit, Randall tells him that a hidden ruler stands above the Five Elders, leaving Zephyr shaken by the Government’s concealed power 501.
The Five Elders later appoint Zephyr to command a Buster Call against the G-1 Branch. He condemns the order as a betrayal of justice, but five Holy Knights threaten to seize him if he disobeys. Their intention is to exploit Randall’s attachment to his teacher 574.
After Randall eliminates the hostile Knights, he asks Zephyr to remain at G-1 until the impending confrontation is resolved. Zephyr answers simply, “Take care” 578.
Appearance
- Build: Towering and muscular, with a broad chest 27 74.
- Hair: Purple; Christa jokingly treats its color as proof that he cannot be old 76.
- Expression: A stern, hard-lined face that can soften into the expression of a kindly older man 26.
- Gaze: Described as sharper than an eagle’s when he questions Randall about justice 8.
Personality
Zephyr combines exacting discipline with genuine investment in his students. He values composure as well as strength, approving of Randall’s lack of arrogance after defeating Pietro. Weakness is tolerable to him; desertion is not. Pietro’s abandonment of the assessment makes him furious, though he restrains his outward reaction 8 23.
His teaching is deliberately rough. Surprise attacks, prolonged beatings, and immediate returns to training are recurring methods, but he also praises ingenuity and adjusts instruction to each student’s needs. He regards Randall, Milers, and Aequus as the Navy’s future rather than merely successful recruits 9 10 28 29.
Beneath his gruff jokes, Zephyr is affectionate and protective. His relief at Randall’s survival precedes his reprimand, and he later takes pride—not offense—in being surpassed. His stubbornness also extends to his own health: he initially denies being ill and resists treatment until Randall physically takes him to the medical department 74 345 356.
Zephyr personally refuses to kill but does not impose that rule on others. His loyalty to justice can place him in conflict with Marine leadership, particularly when soldiers’ lives are treated as expendable or the World Government demands obedience at the expense of the Navy’s principles 308 351 574.
Abilities & Skills
Armament Haki
Zephyr’s mastery of Armament Haki earned him the name Black Arm Zephyr and made him one of the sea’s foremost fighters 77.
- Internal Destruction: Penetrates defenses, allowing him to injure Randall even when deliberately lowering his Haki to match the student’s level 27.
- Precise output control: Can moderate his strength during training rather than relying solely on superior power 26 27.
- Defensive counterattacks: Meets Randall’s charged Qi Wave with a Haki-coated punch and emerges essentially unharmed 48.
- Large-scale force: Blasts Kaido’s dragon body several kilometers away from Marine Headquarters 228.
- Limits: His unprepared physical durability is explicitly inferior to Kaido’s; Randall’s surprise Impact Steel forces him back three steps 27.
- Later comparison: Zephyr acknowledges that Randall’s Armament mastery has surpassed his own 346.
Six Powers
Zephyr teaches the Six Powers through direct combat demonstrations 9.
| Technique | Demonstrated use |
|---|---|
| Shave | Rapid repositioning during combat 9. |
| Iron Body | Withstands Randall’s punch, making his chest feel like steel 9. |
| Finger Pistol | Delivers a concentrated strike that Randall considers more punishing than a cannonball 9. |
| Tempest Kick | Produces a blue cutting wave that opens a gash more than ten meters long in a steel floor 9. |
| Kami-e | Makes his body pliant enough to evade Randall’s combined Shave and Finger Pistol attack 9. |
| Geppo | Remains airborne by kicking against the air; also uses it while searching for Randall at sea 9 73. |
Physical Combat
Zephyr is identified as possessing Admiral-level strength even after being described as a former Admiral 27.
- Overwhelms Randall, Milers, and Aequus together within minutes 27.
- Finishes an hour-long early training fight without breathing hard or disturbing his clothes 10.
- Defeats Randall’s post-recovery armored form without sustaining damage 75 76.
- Punches a temporary hollow into the ocean to reach the submerged Randall 73.
- Recognizes his own limits: he cannot guarantee victory over Bullet, and later admits that age and illness have made him vulnerable 76 356.
Instruction and Combat Assessment
Zephyr oversees the Elite Camp, while his students normally handle its daily instruction. Personal lessons from him are rare and highly coveted 8.
- Identifies exceptional talent beyond standard measurements, admitting Christa despite her insufficient doriki because she was born with awakened Observation Haki 47.
- Holds final authority over Elite Camp admissions 47.
- Builds individualized training plans and delegates instruction when appropriate 28.
- Explains tactical weaknesses, including diluted full-body Haki protection and the Qi Wave’s long, exposed charging period 47 48.
- Arranges field opponents near the cadets’ limits to develop their resolve and combat experience 351.
Equipment / Items
- Den Den Mushi — Uses a private telephone line known to only a few old comrades. He also gives Randall a Den Den Mushi to prevent another mission from proceeding without a means of contact 33 56.
- Randall’s Vivre Card — Guides his search through the New World and warns him when Randall approaches death 73.
- Pebbles — Coats them with Armament Haki for Randall’s blindfolded Observation training 29.
Relationships
- Randall — Personal disciple whose foundation Zephyr built. Randall names Zephyr as his true teacher even when opponents recognize techniques associated with Sengoku and Garp; their bond eventually becomes leverage for the World Government 206 574.
- Sengoku — Old friend and frequent partner in teasing arguments. Their disagreements become serious when the Fleet Admiral places political stability above personal loyalty and immediate justice 28 308 320.
