Background / History

Birth and early expectations

Tsunade is Hashirama Senju’s eldest granddaughter and a princess of the Land of Fire. Her birth draws the attention of powerful shinobi and the daimyo. Hashirama confidently predicts that she will surpass their generation, while Tobirama commits to protecting her and preparing her for future responsibilities 1 11 16.

Her parents, Senju Kenji and Senju Sanae, likewise regard her as a future great shinobi and a source of hope for Konoha. Mito attends her birth and shares the family’s joy and concern for her future 1.

Under Tobirama’s direction, she receives systematic ninjutsu instruction from childhood. Hashirama’s death becomes her first real encounter with mortality: she mourns the grandfather who played with her and gave her sweets, then channels that loss into a desire to grow stronger and study medical techniques 10 16.

Meeting Shinichi and Academy life

In early summer of Konoha Year 15, Tsunade visits the Uchiha estate to challenge Shinichi, whom Hashirama had praised. She persuades him to spar by offering food, but he easily avoids her attacks and ends the bout with a gentle pat on her head. Their subsequent meal and hand-holding walk turn the confrontation into the beginning of a close friendship 11.

At the Academy, Tsunade and Shinichi send Shadow Clones to lessons while spending their days fishing, eating, and training beside the Naka River. Orochimaru joins their “Lazy Fish Squad,” and Jiraiya later joins the expanded “Naka River Slacking-Off Squad.” Despite the groups’ names, Shinichi teaches them advanced chakra control, Rasengan, and the Six Styles 13 14 16 19 24.

First Shinobi World War

After graduating in Konoha Year 16, Tsunade serves under Hiruzen alongside Orochimaru and Jiraiya. On the front lines, her medical skill allows her to treat numerous wounded shinobi and stabilize critical patients 27 28.

During an operation against Iwagakure, her team destroys an important supply depot but is surrounded by forces led by Kitsuchi. Tsunade attacks him directly with chakra-enhanced strength, yet the team approaches exhaustion as the encirclement tightens. Shinichi arrives in time to counter Kitsuchi’s crushing earth attack and ultimately leads the three out of danger 32 35.

Shinichi collapses after the rescue. Tsunade catches him and recognizes how far he has pushed himself to protect her. Holding his injured body marks the first time her heart is explicitly stirred by him 34.

Research and jōnin advancement

Following the war, Tsunade advances to chūnin. Inspired by Shinichi’s sealing accomplishments, she reduces her mission activity to study alongside him and investigate ways to combine Medical Ninjutsu with Sealing Jutsu. She regularly recruits him to redraw arrays, optimize formulas, and consult Mito 39 40.

By Konoha Year 21, she becomes a jōnin and develops Senju Strong Fist, adapting Shinichi’s teaching to her own overwhelming strength. She continues researching medical and sealing techniques and begins investigating Lightning Release Chakra Mode, intending to challenge Shinichi once she masters it 49.

Their rivalry also extends to strategy games. During a visit to the Senju residence, Shinichi wins ten consecutive matches against her before Tobirama orders her back to training 51.

Tobirama’s death and senjutsu training

Tsunade attends Tobirama’s final gathering with his students and loved ones. He comforts her and tells her that she need not become like him, encouraging her instead to be herself and protect what she cherishes. Shinichi quietly supports her as she faces the loss. Tobirama dies peacefully, and his passing is placed in Konoha Year 22 52 53.

Tsunade subsequently masters the Strength of a Hundred Technique and learns Lightning Release Chakra Mode from Shinichi, reaching Kage Level. When he suggests pursuing Sage Mode in Shikkotsu Forest, she recognizes that his encouragement may conceal a plan to benefit from her training. Rather than let him remain behind, she insists that he accompany her 54 55.

With Mito’s approval, Katsuyu transports the pair to Shikkotsu Forest. The Slug Sage warns them that improperly handling natural energy can petrify or destroy a trainee. Tsunade initially progresses more smoothly than Shinichi, whose enormous chakra reserves complicate the required balance. Both eventually achieve Sage Mode, although Tsunade initially maintains hers only briefly 55 56 57.

On returning to Konoha, they learn from Orochimaru about growing Uchiha unrest, the establishment of Root, and the increased bounty on Shinichi. Tsunade later watches Shinichi’s renewed challenge against Hiruzen and nearly intervenes when the Hokage lands a heavy blow, but Orochimaru persuades her to continue watching 57 58.

Travels and the Land of Demons

Shinichi chooses Tsunade as his companion for a journey through the shinobi world, regarding her Kage-level strength, courage, and fighting spirit as well suited to exploration. Her excitement is tempered by exasperation when she discovers that his apparent preparations do not include a clear first destination 62 63.

In the Land of Demons, Tsunade questions his willingness to accept the miko’s prophecy. He explains that he wants to test whether fate can be defied or rewritten. He then offers her the Rumble-Rumble Fruit as a means of strengthening her abilities and improving her battlefield survival. Although suspicious of his refusal to eat it himself, she accepts and discovers its lightning powers immediately after enduring its terrible taste 66.

During the confrontation with Huangquan and Moryo, Shinichi entrusts the enemy troops to Tsunade. She tests her new abilities with Thunder God Shattering Fist while he battles Moryo. Her confidence turns to alarm when Madara’s shapeshifting clone takes control of the demon and counters Shinichi’s lightning. After Shinichi destroys the enemies with Zanka no Tachi, she checks on him and scolds his overconfidence 68 69.

Journey to the future and medical support

Tsunade and Shinichi visit a future Konoha, where they encounter an older Tsunade serving as Hokage. The older woman has no memory of Shinichi’s existence, a discrepancy that also unsettles the younger Tsunade. The two versions of Tsunade later share a meal with him at an izakaya 79 80 81.

After investigating the future village’s archives, young Tsunade finds little that surpasses the techniques she already knows and decides to return home. Shinichi gives the future Hokage extensive ninjutsu records and intelligence before rejoining his companion. They travel to the Dragon Vein ruins and return through a space-time portal to Rōran’s underground palace, uncertain how much time has elapsed 87.

When Dragon Vein chakra later destabilizes Shinichi’s body, Tsunade insists on accompanying him to his laboratory. Her medical chakra cannot overcome the Dragon Vein’s resistance, so she monitors his vital signs while he undertakes a dangerous fusion of ocular powers and constructs a new sealing system. She remains concerned about his transformations but ultimately trusts him 92.

Their subsequent training and discussions with Orochimaru return frequently to the Naka River. Exchanges concerning chakra, medical ninjutsu, biotechnology, and the principles behind techniques deepen their bonds and help Tsunade become more mature, composed, and technically accomplished 94.

Protecting Uzushio and Kushina

By the eve of renewed war, Tsunade has received further enhancements through the God Tree factor and Tremor-Tremor Fruit. The system judges her capable of contending with and overwhelmingly defeating a veteran such as Hanzō, though this is an assessment rather than a recorded duel between them 109.

When Mito asks Shinichi to bring Kushina Uzumaki to Konoha, Tsunade understands that the mission is connected to preparations for transferring the Nine-Tails. Saddened by the implications for her grandmother, she nevertheless joins Shinichi and resolves to give Kushina protection and a happy childhood 110 111.

In Uzushio, Ashina asks Tsunade to guide the future jinchūriki and help her settle in Konoha. He also reveals mounting foreign espionage and Konoha’s failure to provide assistance. Angered by this neglect, Tsunade promises that she and Shinichi will defend the village. They spend time with Kushina, reassuring her that they will protect her from mistreatment 111 112.

An alarm interrupts their outing. Tsunade immediately adopts a focused, protective role while Shinichi prepares to confront the attackers. After the pair help defeat the allied forces of four major villages, Ashina thanks them as Uzushio’s saviors. They remain for several peaceful days before bringing Kushina to Konoha, where Tsunade assures her that she will be cared for and may return home whenever she wishes 112 116.

Land of Water campaign

As the four great villages coordinate against Konoha, Tsunade shares Shinichi’s concern that internal divisions and the leadership’s tolerance of Danzō leave the village vulnerable. She questions his casual treatment of political crises but agrees that Konoha can no longer rely solely on Hiruzen’s decisions 121.

Tsunade commands Konoha’s Land of Water offensive against Kirigakure. She breaks through Mist defenses before the Third Mizukage intervenes. Noticing his unnatural chakra and mechanical behavior, she identifies Madara’s control through White Zetsu; the appearance of the Sharingan in the Mizukage’s eyes confirms her deduction 124.

Madara manifests Susanoo through the Mizukage, but Tsunade counters with Quake Release: Quake-Splitting Heaven and Earth. The shock wave destroys the chakra giant and devastates the battlefield. She severely injures the Mizukage, captures him alive, seals his chakra, and challenges Madara to confront her directly 124.

Marriage and Hokage succession

Tsunade and Shinichi’s relationship develops into marriage. Their wedding is already being planned when Shinichi becomes concerned about a possible plot against it, and they later spend their honeymoon in the Land of Hot Water. During that stay, Tsunade approves of his personalized instruction for Minato, Nawaki, and Kushina and encourages the students to use their remaining quiet days productively 133 140.

By the succession crisis, Tsunade serves as Hokage Advisor. After Shinichi restrains Danzō, he urges her to become the Fourth Hokage. She initially fears the responsibility and doubts her suitability, but agrees to consider the role if Konoha supports her and Shinichi remains beside her 145.

Shinichi pressures Hiruzen to step down, overriding his objections about Tsunade’s youth and experience. Hiruzen subsequently convenes the jōnin and clan leaders, announces his resignation, and nominates Tsunade, praising her battlefield leadership and role in repelling the four-village invasion 146 147.

At the public handover, Hiruzen places the Hokage hat on her head and formally names her Fourth Hokage. Tsunade pledges to inherit her predecessors’ ideals, protect Konoha and its people, and guide the village toward a brighter future. The assembled villagers and shinobi greet her appointment enthusiastically 148.

Early administration and external threats

Tsunade’s first days in office expose her to a large administrative backlog. Shinichi advises her to prioritize village-wide concerns and delegate routine reports, helping her turn complicated requests into clear decisions. They also discuss dismantling Root, whose leader has been removed but whose organization remains dangerous 149.

Shizune’s report of unusual chakra near the Land of Hot Water interrupts these discussions. Tsunade initially proposes sending Kakashi with sensory and medical personnel, but Shinichi warns that ordinary shinobi would be outmatched if the Ōtsutsuki are involved. She reluctantly accepts his offer to investigate alone after he promises to retreat if necessary; he then departs secretly while she continues her duties 149 150.

As Shinichi reveals more about the Ōtsutsuki and the roots of the Senju–Uchiha conflict, Tsunade reacts angrily to the possibility that generations of shinobi warfare have been entangled in an ancient family struggle. She also receives his reassurance that he has addressed the immediate threat from the moon 165 166 174.

Retirement, renewed power, and pregnancy

After twenty years without an Ōtsutsuki attack, Konoha is prosperous and Minato serves as Fifth Hokage. Tsunade has retired from office and enjoys a quieter life with Shinichi. She asks him to have a child, but he fears that the coming confrontation with the “God of Ōtsutsuki” may leave her and their child without him. Understanding that his hesitation comes from fear rather than lack of love, she agrees to wait 198.

Shinichi later fundamentally changes her power, replacing the life-burning basis of her Strength of a Hundred Technique with a connection to protection and living beings. She becomes the embodiment of the planet’s “will of life,” no longer dependent on stored chakra 203.

When Shinichi brings Hashirama and Tobirama back from the Pure Land, Tsunade intervenes in Tobirama’s confrontation with her husband. She states that she chose Shinichi and announces her pregnancy. Hashirama responds with delighted curiosity, while Tobirama initially condemns the joining of Senju and Uchiha bloodlines 210.

Tsunade accompanies the brothers and Shinichi through modern Konoha and to Minato’s office. The village’s peace and the report of resolved conflicts eventually persuade Tobirama to abandon his old security-minded assumptions and consider a more relaxed life 210 211.

She challenges Shinichi because of Hashirama’s praise, reacts indignantly when Orochimaru’s five chakra natures exceed her four, and repeatedly vows to surpass Shinichi. His teasing often earns punches or threats rather than a restrained response 11 15 25 48 49.

Her forceful manner accompanies genuine discipline. She persists through failed Rasengan exercises, pursues medical–sealing research, and trains while Shinichi appears to relax. In battle, she responds to being surrounded by attacking the enemy commander rather than retreating into fear 17 32 40 48.

Shinichi’s companionship softens her early fixation on strength and responsibility. She learns to enjoy fishing, shared meals, and playful complaints without abandoning her ambitions. Her affection is clearest when his injuries frighten her, although flirtatious remarks still make her blush and protest 13 24 34 42 44 47.

Her ambition remains strong as her abilities expand. She willingly undertakes dangerous senjutsu training, refuses to let Shinichi avoid accompanying her, and embraces the challenge of mastering her new lightning body. She is also perceptive about his motives, repeatedly recognizing the schemes concealed beneath his apparently generous advice 54 55 56 66.

With experience, her competitiveness develops into greater maturity and composure. Shinichi’s encouragement helps her work through fears that she will be unable to keep pace with him. Her concern extends beyond personal strength to Kushina’s well-being, Uzushio’s security, and Konoha’s political future 94 111 112 121.

Tsunade does not accept leadership without hesitation. She fears the weight of the Hokage position and initially doubts herself, but Shinichi’s promise of shared responsibility helps her commit to it. In office, she begins learning to balance direct involvement with delegation and difficult strategic decisions 145 148 149.

Her later domestic life shows increased patience and emotional insight. She understands Shinichi’s fear of starting a family before his final confrontation and gives him time. When Tobirama challenges their marriage, however, she firmly asserts that choosing Shinichi was her own decision 198 210.

• Shinichi’s apprenticeship under Tobirama gives him grounds to jokingly demand that she call him “Uncle”; she consistently responds with furious fists 25.
• Tobirama briefly considers her among possible successors to the Hokage position, but rejects her immediate candidacy because of her youth and immaturity 37.
• Early references to her becoming the Fifth Hokage describe the future known to Shinichi. In the altered timeline, she is formally installed as Fourth Hokage, and Minato later holds the Fifth Hokage position 1 10 20 148 198 211.
