Ch. 441VS Ash! (1)
Chapter summary
Plot and battle
After his Pokémon recover at the Pokémon Center, Liu Qing sends Gible home and arranges for Liu Yuan to choose a Pokémon too. He does not give Jun one yet, because Jun has not met the condition Liu Qing set.
Liu Qing and Ash begin a rematch at the training ground: a no-time-limit, six-on-six battle with free switching. Liu Qing lets Ash choose the rules and gives him the first move.
Liu Qing opens with his newly acquired Absol, while Ash sends out Monferno, revealing that his Chimchar has evolved. Monferno attacks quickly with Mach Punch, Flamethrower, and Flame Wheel, but Absol counters with Iron Tail and Psycho Cut. Absol then blinds Monferno with Flash and presses its advantage. Ash recalls Monferno just before Absol can land a decisive Iron Tail.
Ash next sends out Staraptor, revealing that his Staravia evolved during the PokéRinger competition in Strongwind Town. Staraptor’s Quick Attack and Aerial Ace drive Absol back, but Liu Qing counters with Iron Tail. Ash then orders Close Combat, and Staraptor begins a rapid series of attacks. The chapter ends with the battle still underway.
Character developments
- Ash has stronger Pokémon than before—Monferno and Staraptor—and shows sound judgment by recalling Monferno before it is knocked out. He recognizes that speed alone cannot win the battle.
- Liu Qing is composed and tactical, using Absol’s moves in sequence to exploit openings and maintain pressure. He also continues to manage which Pokémon his family members receive.
- Absol is introduced as Liu Qing’s new partner and demonstrates power, precision, and strong battle control.
Character interactions
Liu Qing gives Ash the choice of battle format as a courtesy after setting the previous match’s rules himself. Brock referees, while Dawn, Koto, and Issei watch: Dawn identifies Absol with her Pokédex, Koto is intimidated by Liu Qing’s apparent ability to anticipate Ash’s moves, and Issei admires Absol.
Themes
The chapter emphasizes growth through evolution and training, battle strategy over speed alone, and calm decision-making under pressure. It also highlights Liu Qing’s responsibility toward his Pokémon and family, as well as the respect and competitive spirit between the two trainers.
