Background / History
Pursuit and rescue
Zeraora first appears gravely wounded and hiding from Qi Nan’s search teams during a storm. After escaping their search, he crashes onto Hu Bin’s motorhome near Mountain City Natural Forest. Despite fearing the consequences of sheltering a powerful Mythical Pokémon, Hu Bin brings him inside and spends 50,000 system points on advanced medical skills 193.
Hu Bin removes wooden splinters, disinfects and stitches the wounds, and bandages Zeraora with Blaziken’s assistance. Initially suspicious of humans, Zeraora gradually cooperates and accepts Pokéblocks. When a five-person squad surrounds the motorhome, Hu Bin and his Pokémon defeat the attackers while Blaziken remains beside their injured guest 194 195.
After Hu Bin is critically wounded protecting him, Zeraora breaks free of the vehicle with Blaziken. He refuses to flee, attacks Qi Nan’s Salamence, and joins Ninetales, Dragonair, and Blaziken against nearly twenty enemy Pokémon. During the confrontation, he shields his companions with his self-created Thunder Barrier 198 199.
Joining Hu Bin
The attackers are identified as members of the Black Snake Organization. While Hu Bin remains unconscious in hospital, Zeraora keeps vigil beside him with the other Pokémon. Once Hu Bin wakes, Zeraora maintains an aloof manner but eagerly leans into his petting 201.
Zeraora chooses to stay, privately insisting that he only wants to protect Hu Bin. When invited to travel with the team, he agrees and enters a Poké Ball before Hu Bin can finish his formal invitation. Ninetales, Blaziken, and Dragonair welcome him as Hu Bin’s fourth Pokémon 202.
Secrecy and public recognition
Hu Bin initially limits Zeraora’s public appearances to prevent people with ulterior motives from targeting them. During training at Jia Zhuangshi’s Gym, Zeraora runs out of sight of the apprentices; Hu Bin later gives Professor Sycamore the same explanation for keeping him hidden 211 232.
Seeing Zeraora become unhappy while his companions compete, Hu Bin eventually decides that concealment should not deny him opportunities to battle. His appearance against Gu Chen at the China Pokémon League Conference shocks the audience and prominent spectators. Zeraora enjoys the attention and later repeatedly watches footage of himself on television 301 302 303 306.
The danger behind Hu Bin’s caution persists. A man identifying himself with Black Snake later recognizes Zeraora from Mountain City, blames Hu Bin for disrupting the organization and its Darkrai capture plan, and threatens to seize both Zeraora and Latios 397.
Appearance
- Golden coloration: Described as a golden Pokémon when entering battle through Baton Pass 378.
- Feline presentation: His catlike cries, facial expressions, and enjoyment of head rubs repeatedly contrast with his intimidating reputation 194 202 204.
- Powerful physique: Professor Sycamore calls his physique impressive upon examining him 232.
- Electrical display: Lightning gathers around his fists and limbs during attacks; one entrance pulverizes nearby rocks with electrical power 204 478.
Personality
Zeraora is proud, guarded, and deeply invested in appearing cool. He turns away when embarrassed, dislikes the cute sound of his own meowing, and finds Work Up’s self-encouragement humiliating. Nevertheless, he follows Hu Bin’s commands even when they undermine that image 194 195 209.
His affection is more obvious than he admits. He claims to stay only because Hu Bin needs protection, yet smiles at the invitation to join, enjoys head rubs, and retreats into his Poké Ball after an especially affectionate victory celebration. He also becomes jealous when Hu Bin admires Gu Chen’s Zoroark 202 204 303.
Zeraora enjoys difficult battles and public recognition, but his pride does not prevent him from protecting others. He shields teammates during the Black Snake confrontation and accepts substantial injuries while guarding Riolu and Froakie during the Ultra Beast outbreak 198 199 209 233 237.
Abilities & Skills
Volt Absorb
- Converts incoming Electric-type moves into stamina recovery rather than suffering their damage or effects 329.
- Uses Thunder on himself to replenish stamina during the battle with Raikou, though the recovery does not fully restore him to peak condition 328 329.
- Forces Raikou to favor non-Electric attacks because lightning would help Zeraora endure the fight 329.
Plasma Fists and close-range combat
- Plasma Fists: His signature attack combines lightning-charged punches with exceptional speed. He defeats Aerodactyl, Leafeon, Raichu, and Sidney’s Zoroark with single decisive strikes 204 303 353 500.
- Repeated Plasma Fists: A maximum-power barrage defeats Mega Gyarados and knocks it out of Mega Evolution 317.
- Fighting techniques: Uses Close Combat, Mega Punch, and Dynamic Punch; Lucario teaches him Mega Punch during their training period 209 212 237 329.
- Ground-type limitation: An aerial Plasma Fists strike knocks Flygon backward but is insufficient to defeat it because its Ground typing reduces the move’s effectiveness 304.
Thunder Barrier
- A self-created defensive technique that weaves electrical strands or Electroweb into a barrier 199 303.
- Can shield multiple companions from simultaneous Dragon Pulses or surround Zeraora completely as a spherical defense 199 317.
- Blocks attacks including Aura Sphere, Mystical Fire, Dark Blast, and Mandibuzz’s Sky Attack 209 303 304 500.
- Has limits: Volcarona’s Flare Blitz begins breaking through it, forcing a retreat. A reinforced version withstands Pikachu’s 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt but is left almost destroyed 380 551.
Magnetic-field flight
- Generates a magnetic field using electricity emitted from his hands and feet, allowing him to hover and travel rapidly through the air 241 304.
- Stronger electrical output produces a stronger magnetic field, increasing his flying speed and range 304.
- Avoids ground-based attacks such as Flygon’s Earthquake and Raikou’s High Horsepower 304 328.
- Strong winds can destabilize his flight: Mega Altaria’s Hurricane disrupts the magnetic field, while Volcarona’s Hurricane makes it difficult to remain steady 305 380.
- Can use electricity to accelerate backward and escape an attack that is breaking his defense 380.
Electrical attacks and terrain combinations
- Thunder and Thunderbolt: Used for ranged attacks, countering opposing moves, and—with Volt Absorb—self-recovery 199 240 328 329.
- Electric Terrain → Rising Voltage: Spreads electricity across the battlefield and doubles Rising Voltage’s power under the terrain 304.
- Volt Tackle and Wild Charge: Lightning-covered charging attacks used in direct clashes; Volt Tackle also breaks him out of Flygon’s Sand Tomb 224 305 380.
- Thunder Punch: Combines with Dragonite’s Thunder Punch to defeat Kartana 406.
- Electric Grass Knot: Hu Bin’s custom combination of Rising Voltage and Grass Knot can hit Ground-types, becomes stronger against heavier targets, and doubles in power under Electric Terrain. Hu Bin identifies it as the technique used to defeat Esdeath’s Garchomp and Volcarona 381.
- Gigavolt Havoc: Prepared as an Electric-type Z-Move against Mega Absol; its outcome is not included in the supplied passage 500.
Aura and bond-based techniques
- Learns to discover and train his aura from Lucario, enabling him to use Aura Sphere 212.
- Uses Aura Sphere in battle against Zhu Yan’s Charizard 223.
- Coordinates secretly with Hu Bin through Aura while buried beneath rubble, setting up a surprise attack on Raikou 329.
- Uses Return with power attributed to his deep bond with Hu Bin 329.
Boosting, substitution, and clones
- Work Up / Self-Motivation: Raises Attack and Special Attack through self-encouragement, despite Zeraora’s embarrassment at performing it 209 305.
- Baton Pass support: Receives Ninetales’s Nasty Plot and Calm Mind stat increases; these are temporary rather than a permanent transformation 378 380.
- Protect and Substitute: Uses Protect defensively and Substitute to evade Charizard’s Inferno 223 241 305.
- Multi Shadow Clone Jutsu: Overwhelms Lapras with clones, but does not prevent the double knockout caused by Destiny Bond 574.
Equipment / Items
- Poké Ball — Enters voluntarily when joining Hu Bin; also uses it to hide after becoming embarrassed by their affectionate celebration 202 204.
- Air Balloon — Assists his initial flight against Guzzlord. Its destruction forces him to master independent magnetic-field flight 240 241.
Relationships
- Hu Bin — Rescuer and Trainer. Hu Bin’s willingness to risk his life earns Zeraora’s trust; their bond supports Aura coordination and a powerful Return 193 198 202 329.
- Ninetales, Blaziken, and Dragonair — Original teammates who help care for him, fight alongside him, and welcome him into the group. Ninetales later supplies the Baton Pass boosts used against Garchomp 194 198 202 378.
- Jia Zhuangshi’s Lucario — Respected opponent and teacher. Their serious battle introduces Hu Bin to Mega Evolution; Lucario subsequently teaches Zeraora Fighting techniques and aura training 209 212.
- Little Joy / Riolu — Younger teammate whose cheering encourages Zeraora during the Charizard battle. Zeraora later protects him during the Ultra Beast outbreak 224 233 237.
- Froakie — Welcomed as a promising future teammate and protected alongside Riolu. Zeraora hopes the outbreak will help both younger Pokémon develop combat instincts 232 233 237.
- Raikou — Hu Jiaxing’s Pokémon and a respected rival. Raikou initially approves of Zeraora; their eventual battle ends in a double knockout and an exchanged smile 303 329.
- Professor Sycamore — Fascinated by Zeraora, but examines him so intrusively that Zeraora silently asks Hu Bin whether he may strike him 232.
- Qi Nan and the Black Snake Organization — Pursuers and enemies. Their attempt to capture Zeraora leads to his rescue and the attack on Hu Bin 193 198 201 397.
