Background / History
Ninetales is already part of Hu Bin’s life when the real world and Pokémon world merge. He awakens with her, still an Alolan Vulpix, asleep on his chest; a family photograph also establishes her place in the rewritten household history 1.
As Vulpix, she eagerly anticipates evolution. Hu Bin feels both pride and reluctance at seeing his small companion grow, but promises to support her. She reassures him that they will remain together, while Tapu Koko prepares her for both stronger Ice-type techniques and the Fairy-type moves available after evolution 81.
On Mount Lanakila, the elder Ninetales welcomes her and agrees to train her. During an evolution ritual accompanied by the wild Vulpix herd’s singing, she exchanges a reassuring look with Hu Bin and deliberately chooses to evolve. Afterward, she comforts her tearful Trainer, licking his tears and returning to his embrace 83.
Her instruction continues through evening sessions with the elder Ninetales, with Tapu Koko providing transport. Before the expedition to capture the escaped Nihilego, the elder adds lessons on fighting wild Pokémon 84 114. Much later, she spends a year training in Alola; despite her formidable new presence, she cries with excitement and leaps into Hu Bin’s arms when he returns to Mount Lanakila 569 573.
Appearance
Ninetales has a flawless, snow-white coat, nine long tails, and an elegant bearing that repeatedly attracts spectators and opposing Pokémon 83 170 308.
- Nine tails: Her original six tails lengthen during evolution, and three additional tails emerge 83.
- Carefully groomed fur: She smooths and styles her coat before showing her evolved appearance to Hu Bin’s parents 84.
- Larger build: After evolution, Tapu Koko can no longer carry both her and Hu Bin together, and Hu Bin finds their shared bed increasingly cramped 84 88.
- Regal presence: Ralts admires her queenly poise; after her year of Alolan training, others scarcely dare meet her gaze 268 569.
Personality
Ninetales is proud of her beauty and enjoys admiration. Immediately after evolving, she studies herself in a full-length mirror, waits outside Hu Bin’s parents’ bedroom to surprise them, and plans a theatrical entrance for village training. Her concern for her spotless coat also makes Quagsire’s Mud Shot particularly irritating 84 85 91.
Her aloof public bearing does not diminish her affection for Hu Bin. She enjoys his praise, head pats, and massages, sleeps nestled in his arms, and checks on him after his first skateboarding fall. Even after becoming an imposing fighter, their reunion instantly dissolves her “ice queen” composure 84 93 219 569.
Within the team, she behaves as a protective older sister. She cleans Torchic, shields him from Nihilego, brings breakfast to newborn Ponyta, and comforts Kubfu when it blames itself for their failed tower attempt 81 117 362 518. This devotion can become stubbornness in battle: she refuses to withdraw against Dragonite and spends her final strength securing a double knockout against Emboar 275 379.
Abilities & Skills
Hail and Snow Cloak
Ninetales combines self-created Hail with Snow Cloak to evade attacks while wearing opponents down 274 275.
- Snow Cloak increases her evasiveness by 20% in hail; her system description also states that hail does not deplete her stamina 84 315 327.
- Against Qu Shen’s Dragonite, she wins through prolonged evasion and weather damage, summoning Hail again when the first storm ends 275.
- Her weather control is not absolute: Esdeath’s Garchomp overpowers Hail with Sandstorm, while Emboar’s Sunny Day prevents her from establishing it 378 379.
- Snow Cloak does not guarantee safety. Suicune catches her with Extreme Speed despite the evasion boost 327.
Ice- and Fairy-Type Attacks
Her offensive moves include Ice Beam, Dazzling Gleam, and Moonblast, giving her strong options against Dragon-type opponents 84 274 373.
- Ice Beam: Used for direct attacks, freezing terrain, and obstructing an opponent’s movement 92 153.
- Dazzling Gleam: First used in battle against Lina’s Quagsire; later overwhelms Red’s Espeon through a simultaneous clone barrage 92 573.
- Moonblast: Defeats Li Gang’s Glaceon and can be fired at the ground to launch Ninetales out of Earthquake’s reach 373 374.
- Terrain manipulation: Against Sceptile, Ice Beam’s recoil launches her upward while the resulting ice pillar absorbs Energy Balls 216.
Extrasensory
Ninetales uses Extrasensory both as a psychic attack and for precise manipulation of objects and opponents 91 117 249.
- Suspends Quagsire’s Mud Shot and redirects the mud toward its user 91.
- Restrains Nihilego to prevent escape and create openings for teammates 117 123.
- Forms a blade-like psychic attack against Gengar and Emboar 170 379.
- Handles shopping bags, helps groom household members, and lifts Kubfu onto her back 106 249 518.
Return
Return converts Ninetales’s bond with Hu Bin into a powerful charging attack 135 275 315.
- Requires mastery of emotional energy; neither Ninetales nor Torchic learns it immediately from instructional material 100 135.
- Smashes through Sceptile’s Energy Ball and drives it into a wall 216.
- Allows her to contest Fire-type charges, including Emboar’s Flare Blitz 379.
- Overpowers Lin Longya’s Dragonite during an Extreme Speed collision, leaving Ninetales unharmed 535.
Defensive Movement and Deception
Ninetales combines speed, decoys, barriers, and underground movement to survive stronger attacks 153 216 378.
- Double Team: Creates multiple copies to confuse targeting; she later combines these copies with offensive moves 373 476 550 573.
- Substitute: Tricks Crabrawler and Gallade into striking decoys, allowing counterattacks 153 179.
- Protect: Blocks attacks including Hyper Beam, Flamethrower, and Fire Fang 216 310 378.
- Dig: Avoids attacks and enables surprise strikes, but opponents can counter underground movement with Earthquake 216 274.
- Iron Tail: Striking the ground launches her into the air to escape Dragonite’s Earthquake 274.
Stat Boosting and Baton Pass
Ninetales can strengthen herself or prepare another teammate for a decisive attack 179 378.
- Nasty Plot: Raises Special Attack; three successive uses allow her Ice Beam to contest Gallade’s Hyper Beam 179.
- Calm Mind: Raises Special Attack and Special Defense 378.
- Baton Pass: Transfers accumulated stat changes to a reserve Pokémon 378.
- Her recipients include Combusken, Dratini, and Zeraora. Zeraora uses her inherited boosts to defeat Esdeath’s Garchomp with Rising Voltage 179 378.
Sheer Cold
Sheer Cold is a finishing move that freezes and immediately incapacitates a target when it lands 327.
- The stated chance of hitting is 30% 327.
- Ninetales reproduces it after witnessing Articuno use it only once 327.
- Successfully freezes Suicune, Serperior, and Ash’s Infernape 327 342 550.
- Her later clone barrage launches several attempts in succession rather than relying on a single attack 550.
Z-Moves and Dynamax
Ninetales accesses both battle systems through coordination with Hu Bin 92 507.
- Subzero Slammer: Initially activated through their synchronized dance and the resonance between Hu Bin’s Z-Ring and Ice Z-Crystal 92.
- Later performs the Z-Move without dancing and uses it to defeat Leijiaer’s Raichu and Li Gang’s Mega Gyarados 268 373.
- Dynamax: Enlarges her to match Gigantamax Machamp’s scale 507.
- Max Hailstorm: Replaces her Ice-type moves while Dynamaxed, producing ice pillars and summoning hail 507.
Racing and Other Learned Moves
Ninetales is an enthusiastic racing partner who can tow Hu Bin on a skateboard at high speed 219 228.
- Accelerates beyond the speed Zhu Yan initially believes to be her limit and helps Hu Bin defend his lead through turns 228.
- Wins the Haimen speed race alongside Hu Bin 230.
- Uses Aurora Veil and Powder Snow together for a theatrical entrance 85.
- Her post-evolution moveset also includes Tackle, Mist, Tail Whip, Hypnosis, Howl, and Attract 84.
- Later demonstrates Hyper Beam, overpowering Machamp’s version after a Nasty Plot boost 373.
