Ch. 421The Sinnoh Gym Leaders' Discussion
Plot points and events
- Roark orders Tyranitar to use Heavy Slam against Hu Bin’s Greninja. Hu Bin counters with Double Team combined with Substitute, creating solid clones that each launch Water Shuriken. The swarm overwhelms Tyranitar before it can attack.
- Roark recognizes the move as an original technique. Hu Bin explains that the clones are tangible and can attack, though each has only a fraction of Greninja’s strength and their stamina cost falls on the original. He names it “Ninjutsu: Multi Shadow Clone Jutsu.”
- Roark concedes defeat, awards Hu Bin the Gym Badge and a Stealth Rock move manual, and promises to transfer his prize money. Hu Bin, eager to grow his marriage fund, warmly praises Roark before setting off for Eterna City to challenge another Gym.
- Roark alerts the Sinnoh Gym Leaders that Hu Bin has arrived and defeated him. Several leaders announce they are away and send their Badges for Hu Bin to collect. Volkner welcomes a challenge, while Roark’s father, Byron, says he will try to avenge Roark.
Character developments and interactions
- Hu Bin stays calm under pressure, reveals another inventive technique, and confidently continues his rapid Badge quest. His excitement over the prize money adds a comic, practical side to his ambition.
- Roark goes from confident challenger to impressed and gracious loser. His bewilderment at Hu Bin’s compliment—and later at the other leaders’ convenient absences—provides much of the humor.
- The other Gym Leaders react unevenly: most appear to avoid facing Hu Bin, while Volkner is willing to fight and Byron is boldly protective of his son. Roark doubts whether Byron can actually win.
Significant themes
- Creativity and innovation: Hu Bin’s move combines familiar techniques into a powerful new strategy.
- Escalating reputation: His victory quickly spreads through the Gym Leaders’ network, shaping their reactions before he arrives.
- Comedy through contrast: Hu Bin’s serious League ambitions are paired with his focus on prize money, while the Gym Leaders’ excuses undercut the formality of the challenge system.
