Background / History
Childhood and the Uchiha Massacre
Sasuke attends Konoha’s Ninja Academy for a little over a year. He finds the lessons boring because he already knows the material, but Itachi explains that school also teaches coexistence. Looking up to his brother, Sasuke promises to work toward belonging to both the Uchiha and Konoha 197 235.
That trust collapses when Itachi massacres the clan. Sasuke witnesses his parents’ deaths, though Itachi spares him after promising Mikoto that he will do so. Izuna and Shisui take Sasuke away from Konoha to the Land of Grass 199 204 235.
The surviving Uchiha initially direct some of their hatred for Itachi toward Sasuke. Frightened and traumatized, he clings to Shisui during the clan’s funeral. Shisui comforts him and insists that his brother’s actions are not his fault 204.
Apprenticeship and the Hope of Resurrection
After the survivors settle in the Land of Grass and temporarily conceal their clan identity, Sasuke trains obsessively against targets bearing Itachi’s name. He dismisses the local Academy as unnecessary because he already knows its lessons 206.
Tetsuya offers him a teacher and introduces the possibility of resurrecting his family and clansmen. Orochimaru subsequently takes Sasuke as an apprentice. Sasuke treats him politely, especially because of his promise to teach resurrection techniques; leaving the settlement also removes him from the survivors’ hostile scrutiny 207 209 211.
Orochimaru gives him an Impure World Reincarnation scroll while warning that it is only a first step, not true resurrection. Sasuke rushes away before fully absorbing the explanation. When he discovers its living-sacrifice requirement and temporary nature, he accuses Orochimaru of deception. Tetsuya resolves the misunderstanding, although Sasuke remains too proud to admit his mistake 215 224.
Land of Waves
Traveling with Tetsuya, Sasuke observes Kakashi’s battle with Zabuza and questions the efficiency of copying a technique with lengthy hand seals instead of exploiting the opponent’s opening. He also wants to challenge Kakashi, but accepts Tetsuya’s argument that defeating an exhausted opponent would bring little honor 228 230.
Sasuke enters Haku’s ice dome to fight rather than to rescue Naruto. He breaks through with Chidori, counters Haku’s movements with his Sharingan, and defeats him using Chidori Stream: Chidori Thunderfall 233 234 235.
His reunion with former classmates exposes how distant he has become from Konoha. He remembers Naruto, but genuinely does not recognize Sakura well enough to share her familiarity. His years away with the Uchiha and Orochimaru have displaced those brief Academy connections 235.
Return for the Chunin Exams
After returning from Orochimaru’s hideout, Sasuke stays at Izuna’s residence. Tetsuya’s overwhelming display of violence has humbled him: he quietly sweeps the courtyard and works on his mindset rather than pursuing combat strength alone 243.
Tetsuya assigns him to enter Konoha’s joint Chunin Exams as a Grass ninja, alongside Haku and Karin under Zabuza’s leadership. Tobirama trains all four in teamwork for seven days. Sasuke hopes that a conspicuous performance will attract Itachi and asks Tetsuya for support if they meet 243 244 245.
Following an attack by Root shinobi, Hiruzen apologizes for failing to prevent the massacre and tells Sasuke that Konoha remains his home. Sasuke restrains his killing intent, rejects the invitation, identifies himself as a shinobi of the Land of Grass, and demands additional compensation 252.
Adult Sasuke’s Visit
An adult Sasuke arrives from the future with Boruto. He remains cautious about revealing future information, while Izuna questions his marriage and children and emphasizes his responsibility to rebuild the clan 290.
The pair continue their plan to protect Naruto from the shadows, although Sasuke recognizes that Tetsuya and his allies have already made Urashiki’s defeat highly likely. During Madara’s battle with Urashiki, Sasuke shields Naruto and Boruto from a Susanoo shock wave 291 295.
Confrontation with Itachi
A public account of the massacre reignites the survivors’ anger. Sasuke joins Shisui and Izumi as a clan representative seeking permission to hunt Itachi. Tetsuya persuades the clan to recognize Sasuke as another victim rather than blame him for his brother’s crime. Izumi and the other survivors support his request to deliver their revenge personally 331 332 333.
Tetsuya publishes an online challenge in Sasuke’s name, arranging a duel seven days later. Its location is encoded using a childhood Uchiha code known to the brothers, and Nagato is asked to ensure Itachi sees it 334.
At the abandoned Naka River Shrine, Sasuke confronts Itachi with Orochimaru’s Kusanagi Sword. Their battle progresses from close combat and genjutsu to Mangekyō techniques and Complete Body Susanoo. Sasuke counters Itachi’s Amaterasu with his own black flames, strengthens them with Kagutsuchi, and ultimately defeats him with a final Susanoo arrow 336 337 338 339 340.
The dying Itachi attempts to use Shisui’s Kotoamatsukami eye to rewrite Sasuke’s will and send him back to Konoha. Sasuke anticipates the attempt, intercepts the crow carrying the eye, and rejects the future his brother chose for him. He declares that the survivors will return as Uchiha claiming their founding place in Konoha, not as a bridge serving the village 340.
After Itachi dies, Sasuke feels relief rather than triumph. He seals the body and withdraws while Rin confronts Obito. Tetsuya identifies Obito as the massacre’s other culprit. Sasuke’s priorities turn toward restoring the clan and eventually confronting Konoha; he even considers sacrificing his own life through Rinne Rebirth 341.
Leadership and the Clan’s Restoration
After gaining Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, Sasuke increasingly acts as the clan’s leader. Madara teaches him without reservation, treating him almost as another younger brother, while Izuna accepts him as the Uchiha leader of the current era 359 364.
Sasuke coordinates the survivors’ attack on Danzo, explains the limits of his artificial Sharingan, and helps defeat his summoned Baku. Following Tetsuya’s instructions, he uses genjutsu to prolong Danzo’s desperate flight before killing him with Susanoo near Konoha’s watchtower. He then publicly announces the Uchiha Clan’s return 362 364.
During the later confrontation with Konoha, Sasuke leads a force of Uchiha with advanced Sharingan. He fights Might Guy and then Naruto, whose complete Nine-Tails transformation counters his Susanoo. The prolonged duel continues through ninjutsu and close combat, leaving both battered 448 449.
When the dead Uchiha return, Sasuke stands at the front of the welcoming group as the current clan head, with Shisui and Izumi behind him. Fugaku relinquishes his former title, and Sasuke cries upon seeing his resurrected parents 452.
Shinobi World Federation
Sasuke remains protective of the clan’s independence within the Federation. Tetsuya reassures him that the Uchiha are not being treated as a weapon, prompting Sasuke to express deep gratitude for his support. Izuna then turns his attention to Sasuke’s personal life and takes him away to arrange a blind date 528.
Despite Tetsuya’s reluctance to use them as a military tool, the Uchiha voluntarily join the later Allied Shinobi Forces operation. Sasuke and Shisui lead their contingent, accompanied by clansmen whose Sharingan all have three tomoe 532.
Appearance
Sasuke bears a strong resemblance to Izuna. His adult counterpart is described as approximately eighty percent similar in appearance, though noticeably gloomier in dress and bearing 172 290.
- Clothing: During the Land of Waves visit, wears white with a long purple rope tied behind his waist and a sword at his side 228.
- Eyes: Normally black; turn scarlet when the Sharingan is active. His Mangekyō has a six-pointed-star pattern 235 338.
- Adult counterpart: Wears black and has long, spiky hair with bangs covering both eyes 290.
- Susanoo: A purple Crow Tengu giant, with Sasuke positioned inside the gem on its forehead 339.
Personality
Sasuke initially combines precocious talent with pronounced pride. He dismisses Academy lessons, eagerly challenges strong opponents, and becomes competitive when Naruto displays the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique. Tetsuya views his refusal to submit to authority as closely matching Izuna’s ideal of an independent Uchiha 172 197 230 233.
The massacre leaves him traumatized, consumed by revenge, and vulnerable to self-blame. His desire to restore the clan is equally intense: he overestimates his readiness to perform resurrection techniques and lashes out when reality fails to match his expectations 204 215 224 333.
Tetsuya’s guidance gradually makes him calmer and more deliberate without extinguishing his pride or hostility toward Konoha. By the duel with Itachi, he is observant, decisive, and ruthless enough to surprise his brother. Afterward, he can postpone revenge in favor of the clan’s long-term restoration, while firmly rejecting attempts to decide his future for him 243 337 340 341.
His clan loyalty does not mean isolationism. He argues that the Uchiha should participate actively in a unified shinobi world rather than withdraw into a single territory—a position he develops through his own reflection and Orochimaru’s broader teaching 230.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Genjutsu
Sasuke uses his Sharingan for both combat perception and illusion techniques 224 234 337.
- Tracks Haku’s movement between ice mirrors and anticipates attacks 234.
- Exchanges layered genjutsu with Itachi before their physical battle begins 336 337.
- Uses Eternal Mangekyō genjutsu to manipulate Danzo’s desire to survive and steer his escape 362 364.
- Limit: His earlier attempt to trap Tetsuya is effortlessly reversed, leaving Sasuke inside Tetsuya’s illusion 224.
Amaterasu and Kagutsuchi
His left-eye Mangekyō produces Amaterasu, while his right eye possesses Kagutsuchi 338.
- Counters Itachi’s Amaterasu with his own black flames 338.
- Uses Kagutsuchi to intensify the flames and overwhelm Itachi’s attack 338.
- Limit before Eternal Mangekyō: Heavy use causes bloody tears, exhaustion, blurred vision, and double vision 338.
Susanoo
Sasuke manifests a purple Complete Body Susanoo with substantial offensive reach 339.
- Uses a bow; his final arrow defeats Itachi 339 340.
- Wields a long blade to kill Danzo after exhausting his artificial Sharingan 364.
- Battles Naruto’s complete Nine-Tails transformation 449.
- Limit: Susanoo does not make him untouchable; Tetsuya considers Might Guy’s potential Night Guy attack dangerous enough to warrant safeguards 449.
Lightning Release
Orochimaru teaches Sasuke Chidori, which he develops into weapon-based attacks 228 235 337.
- Chidori: Breaks through Haku’s ice dome 234.
- Chidori Stream: Chidori Thunderfall: Channels lightning through his blade, shatters the dome, and knocks Haku down 235.
- Chidori Stream: Fūma Shuriken: Electrifies a large shuriken, cutting through Itachi’s clone and its kunai 337.
- Can gather thunderclouds while preparing a lightning attack, although ANBU intervention interrupts the technique 252.
Fire Release
Fire Release is one of Sasuke’s declared specialties 244.
- Uses the Great Fireball Technique against Haku’s ice-spike barrage 234.
- Vaporizes most of the spikes, then advances through the flames to wound Haku 235.
- Combines Fire Release with swordsmanship and Chidori during his duel with Itachi 336.
Swordsmanship and Shurikenjutsu
Sasuke combines quick weapon attacks with feints, elemental enhancement, and Sharingan perception 234 336 337.
- Pressures Haku with fast, lethal sword strikes 234.
- Uses successive shuriken volleys to maintain pressure on Itachi 337.
- Can perform one-handed seals while fighting 234.
Snake Techniques and Sealing
His training under Orochimaru includes snake-based defensive techniques 337.
- A white snake emerging from his sword sheath coils around him and blocks attacks from Itachi and his clone 337.
- Uses a sealing scroll to store Itachi’s body after their duel 341.
Resurrection Studies
Sasuke studies forbidden techniques to bring back his family and clan, not merely to defeat Itachi 215 341.
- Receives an Impure World Reincarnation scroll from Orochimaru 215.
- Learns that the technique requires living sacrifices and temporarily summons the dead rather than truly restoring life 224.
- Considers using Rinne Rebirth himself despite its potential cost to his life 341.
- Plans to enter the later battlefield to seize Rinnegan for the clan’s resurrection; this statement is an intention, not a documented awakening 408.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Ninja sword — Used with Chidori and Chidori Stream during the battle with Haku 234 235.
- Kusanagi Sword — Orochimaru’s own sword, given to Sasuke before his duel with Itachi. Sasuke declines Orochimaru’s other offers 336.
- Shuriken and Fūma Shuriken — Used for sustained barrages and lightning-enhanced attacks 337.
- Impure World Reincarnation scroll — Provided by Orochimaru as an initial step toward Sasuke’s resurrection goal 215.
- Sealing scroll — Stores Itachi’s body after the duel 341.
- Shisui’s Kotoamatsukami eye — Intercepted from Itachi’s crow, preventing the attempted rewriting of his will 340.
Relationships
- Itachi Uchiha — Older brother and former idol. The massacre turns their bond into a blood feud; Sasuke defeats him and rejects his final attempt to control his future 197 204 340.
- Fugaku and Mikoto Uchiha — Parents whose deaths Sasuke witnesses. Their eventual resurrection brings him to tears, and Fugaku recognizes him as the new clan head 204 452.
- Shisui Uchiha — Protector, trusted older-brother figure, and fellow clan leader. Comforts Sasuke after the massacre; Itachi attributes Sasuke’s Susanoo knowledge to him 204 339 452.
- Tetsuya / Chiba Tetsuya — Benefactor, mentor, and political patron. Arranges Sasuke’s apprenticeship, develops his emotional discipline, and supports his revenge and leadership 209 243 334 364.
- Orochimaru — Teacher in ninjutsu, resurrection studies, and subjects beyond ordinary shinobi education. Their major dispute arises from Sasuke misunderstanding Impure World Reincarnation 211 215 224 230.
- Izuna Uchiha — Ancestor, host, and mentor. Accepts Sasuke as the clan’s contemporary leader and later takes a forceful interest in his marriage prospects 243 364 528.
- Madara Uchiha — Ancestor and instructor who treats Sasuke almost as a second younger brother. Both are identified as reincarnations of Indra 364.
- Izumi Uchiha — Fellow clan representative who rejects Sasuke’s self-blame and supports him. Later stands beside him as one of the clan’s central figures 333 452.
- Kimimaro — Sparring rival under Orochimaru. Their rivalry becomes hostile when Kimimaro restrains Sasuke for denouncing their teacher 215 224.
- Haku and Karin — Grass squadmates for the joint Chunin Exams. Haku is previously an opponent Sasuke defeats in the Land of Waves 235 244.
- Tobirama Senju — Gives Sasuke guidance and teamwork training, but does not formally accept him as a student as he does Haku and Karin 244 252.
- Naruto Uzumaki — Former classmate and recurring rival. Sasuke dismisses him as “dead last,” later fights him during the Uchiha confrontation with Konoha, and meets him again at the Allied Forces assembly 235 449 532.
- Sakura Haruno — Former classmate who admires him. Sasuke’s failure to recognize her reflects their limited time together, not a deliberate effort to hurt her 235.
- Obito Uchiha — The massacre’s other culprit and an unsuccessful would-be recruiter. Sasuke leaves his confrontation to Rin rather than accept his overtures 340 341.
- Danzo Shimura — Enemy targeted by the survivors for his crimes against the clan. Sasuke leads the operation and delivers the final killing blow 362 364.
