Background / History
As a child, Jiraiya frequents Tetsuya’s ramen shop with Tsunade and Orochimaru. He is scrawny but confident, noisily insisting that he can help Tsunade with whatever is troubling her. The three remain close despite their teasing and increasingly different interests: Jiraiya prefers familiar things, while Orochimaru is fascinated by discovery 5 6 7.
Jiraiya becomes one of Hiruzen Sarutobi’s students and signs a summoning contract with Mount Myōboku. The Great Toad Sage’s prophecy gives him a lifelong mission to find the Child of Prophecy, also called the Child of Destiny, who will bring peace to the shinobi world 19 50 170 368.
He later teaches Minato Namikaze and becomes a novelist. Naruto’s name comes from one of his novels, while Icha Icha Paradise gains readers through both physical books and online serialization 268 369.
Appearance
Jiraiya’s adult appearance is distinguished by long white hair and red clothing. His hair also serves as a weapon and defensive covering 268 275 371.
- Childhood build: Scrawny arms; Tetsuya later remarks that he has grown taller 5 27.
- Long white hair: Can expand around his body, launch needles, or bind opponents 371.
- Sage Mode arrangement: Fukasaku and Shima perch on his shoulders to assist him 350.
Personality
Jiraiya combines swagger and humor with stubborn loyalty. His childhood confidence develops into theatrical introductions and boasts about being the strongest Sannin. His lecherous habits repeatedly undercut that dignity: Naruto persuades him to teach through Sexy Jutsu, and Jiraiya requests further transformations for his supposed “research” 5 268.
He takes the suffering of comrades seriously. On hearing that Sakumo has entered Sunagakure alone, he initially blames Hiruzen and wants to confront him. Orochimaru’s crimes leave him shocked and grieving, but he immediately resolves to bring his former teammate back for repentance or punishment 50 170.
His pursuit of peace does not make him accept every justification offered in its name. He rejects Tetsuya’s claim that engineered war and bloodshed serve peace, and condemns Kabuto for treating living people as tools and desecrating the dead. Nevertheless, when cornered alongside Tsunade, he reluctantly uses Orochimaru’s reanimation scroll to summon help 351 390 397.
Once committed, Jiraiya is difficult to dissuade. He insists on investigating Amegakure alone despite Tsunade’s warnings, and Obito’s taunts about destiny provoke him into repeated, reckless attacks. After the war, he becomes more cautious about confronting powers far beyond Konoha’s capabilities 368 405 437.
Abilities & Skills
Fire and Earth Release
Jiraiya identifies Fire Release and Earth Release as his strongest ninjutsu specialties 269.
- Flame Bullet: Demonstrates the technique and teaches Naruto its hand seals and chakra use 269.
- Great Flame Bullet and Fire Dragon Flame Bullet: Uses these in exchanges with Tetsuya and Yahiko 70 371.
- Swamp of the Underworld: Turns the surrounding ground into a swamp, then watches the mud disturbances to anticipate Yahiko’s landing point 371.
- Limits: Tetsuya’s Great Dragon Fire Technique swallows his Great Flame Bullet, while Yahiko’s high-speed movement makes ordinary fire attacks difficult to land 70 371.
Rasengan
Jiraiya can form the Rasengan without hand seals and recognizes it as Minato’s invention 268.
- Standard Rasengan: Uses it against Yahiko, Kabuto, and Obito 349 371 405.
- Sage Art: Big Ball Rasengan: Breaks through the earthen wall Kabuto animates with senjutsu 351.
- Double Rasengan: Attempts to overcome Obito’s defenses during their final confrontation 405.
- Limits: Neither repeated Rasengan attacks nor Double Rasengan penetrates Obito’s Shinra Tensei when it is reinforced by Dual Rinnegan and Ten-Tails chakra 405.
Summoning and Toad Cooperation
Jiraiya’s Mount Myōboku contract provides both battlefield support and communication methods 19 71 372.
- Gamabunta: Summons the giant toad for combat against Tetsuya and later against Obito’s puppet jinchūriki 71 393 394.
- Toad Flame Blade: Ignites Gamabunta’s oil-coated sword with Fire Release 72.
- Toad Oil Flame Bullet: Combines his flames with Gamabunta’s sticky, flammable oil to create a broad sea of fire 394.
- Giant-toad deployment: Crushes the Three-Headed Snake attacking Konoha beneath a summoned toad 275.
- Messenger toads: Attempts to send intelligence through a toad, but Tetsuya intercepts it and destroys the message 372.
- Limits: Tetsuya’s chakra seal prevents him from summoning Gamabunta during his capture 372.
Mount Myōboku Senjutsu
Jiraiya uses natural energy with Fukasaku and Shima’s help, but his demonstrated Sage Mode is less refined than Kabuto’s Perfect Sage Mode 350 351.
- Assisted activation: Requires the two toad sages and preparation time in the battle against Kabuto 350.
- Coordinated attacks: The three alternate attacks rapidly, maintaining pressure through teamwork 351.
- Sage Art: Goemon: Jiraiya supplies toad oil, Fukasaku supplies wind, and Shima supplies fire to produce a spreading inferno 351.
- Limits: Kabuto manipulates the terrain to counter Goemon and uses senjutsu more freely. Jiraiya continues mixing ordinary ninjutsu between his sage techniques 351.
- Preparation vulnerability: During later crises, Jiraiya has no opportunity to summon the sages and enter Sage Mode 438.
Hair Techniques
Jiraiya manipulates his long hair for defense, ranged attacks, and restraint 371.
- Needle Jizō: Wraps his body in spiked hair. Yahiko’s kick throws him back but punctures Yahiko’s foot 371.
- Sage Art: Hair Needle Senbon: Launches hair needles across a wide area to keep Yahiko at a distance 371.
- Wild Lion’s Mane: Catches Yahiko and slams him into the ground 371.
- Limits: Morning Peacock forces him out of Needle Jizō, and Yahiko’s Seventh Gate breaks his hair restraint 371.
Taijutsu and Combat Tactics
Jiraiya counters Yahiko’s kicks and uses terrain, ranged attacks, and restraints to compensate for the difference in speed 370 371.
- Predicts an opponent’s position from environmental disturbances rather than relying entirely on direct sight 371.
- Uses Hidden Shadow Snake Hands to counter Tetsuya’s attempted Thousand Years of Death 70.
- Limits: Yahiko draws him into an unfavorable close-combat rhythm and ultimately overwhelms his defenses with the Eight Gates and powerful Water Release 370 371.
Intelligence Gathering and Instruction
Jiraiya investigates threats, evaluates reports, and teaches ninjutsu fundamentals 269 343 368.
- Identity analysis: Questions the ANBU’s findings about Nohara Himawari after learning that she knows both Rasengan and Flying Thunder God 269.
- Field investigation: Photographs the destruction near the Naka River and presents it alongside sensory-team findings 343.
- Teaching: Recognizes Naruto’s strong fundamentals and familiar movements, then teaches him Flame Bullet 268 269.
- Limits: Amegakure’s networked surveillance detects him immediately despite his disguise and counter-surveillance precautions 369.
Scroll-Assisted Impure World Reincarnation
Jiraiya uses a prepared technique supplied by Orochimaru, rather than independently demonstrating that he has mastered reanimation 390 397.
- Summons Hashirama Senju, Hiruzen Sarutobi, and Minato Namikaze to help counter Kabuto’s forces 397.
- Hesitates because the technique manipulates the dead and comes from a rogue ninja 397.
Equipment / Items
- Transcription Seal Scroll — Contains Orochimaru’s prepared Impure World Reincarnation technique; delivered by Tetsuya and later used in battle 390 397.
- Ninja tool pouch — Carries the reanimation scroll at his waist 397.
- Mobile phone — Shows Naruto its shopping and delivery functions during their journey to find Tsunade 282.
- Photographs and sensory reports — Uses these to brief Tsunade on the Naka River battle’s aftermath 343.
Relationships
- Tsunade — Childhood friend, teammate, and fellow Sannin. He comforts her during wartime, urges her to lead Konoha, and later serves as her assistant. She fears for his safety and is devastated by his fabricated death 5 50 286 367 368 373.
- Orochimaru — Childhood friend and former teammate. Jiraiya vows to retrieve him after his defection, condemns his treatment of the dead, but eventually accepts his scroll to counter Kabuto 7 170 351 390 397.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher and Hokage, whom Jiraiya familiarly calls “old man.” Hiruzen asks him to support Konoha and entrusts the village to him and the others before dying 19 269 276.
- Minato Namikaze — Former student. Jiraiya recognizes elements of his own teaching in Naruto’s movements and later summons Minato through Orochimaru’s scroll 268 397.
- Naruto Uzumaki — Student and the son of Minato. Their bond begins with comic insults and training; Jiraiya comes to consider him a possible Child of Destiny. Naruto withdraws into isolation after hearing that Jiraiya has died 268 269 368 373.
- Great Toad Sage / Gamamaru — Spiritual guide whose prophecy directs Jiraiya’s search for peace. Before dying, Gamamaru admits that the prophecy has changed and apologizes for sending him across the world 368 437.
- Fukasaku and Shima — Mount Myōboku sages and senjutsu partners. They help him enter Sage Mode and coordinate attacks against Kabuto 350 351.
- Gamabunta — Giant-toad combat partner, cooperating with Jiraiya in sword-and-fire and oil-and-fire attacks 71 72 394.
- Chiba Tetsuya — Familiar ramen-shop owner later exposed as the masked scroll thief and a hidden power. He imprisons Jiraiya, fabricates his death, then releases and equips him for the war 27 371 372 373 390.
- Kabuto Yakushi — Enemy and Orochimaru’s former disciple. Their senjutsu duel becomes a recurring confrontation over reanimation and Orochimaru’s whereabouts 349 350 351 397.
- Yahiko — Amegakure’s ruler and Tetsuya’s student. Reveals the concealed history of the Akatsuki before seriously wounding Jiraiya 370 371.
Story Role / Major Arcs
War and the Sannin Title
During the war, Jiraiya tries to reassure Tsunade while holding to the Great Toad Sage’s promise of eventual peace. The cries of Rain ninja defending their homeland challenge his perspective on Konoha’s campaign 50.
After defeating Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru, Hanzō offers to spare them and names them the Konoha Sannin for surviving. Their confrontation is interrupted by Tobi and a masked “Madara,” whose overwhelming strength forces them into the role of observers. Back in Konoha, Jiraiya passionately defends their account against the elders’ skepticism 58 61.
The Scroll of Seals Incident
Jiraiya discovers Tetsuya impersonating him inside the Hokage Building and raises the alarm. Their pursuit escalates into a village-wide battle involving the Sannin and their summons. Orochimaru recovers the scroll, but the intruder has already studied its contents 70 71 72.
Only decades later does Jiraiya learn that the thief was the ramen-shop owner he had known since childhood 371.
Naruto’s Training and Konoha’s Succession
Jiraiya agrees to train Naruto, but discovers that the boy already knows the Rasengan. His questions about Naruto’s prior instruction lead him to suspect that Nohara Himawari may be the supposedly dead Rin Nohara 268 269.
During the attack on Konoha, he stops the giant snake and helps the defenders organize a counterattack, then witnesses Hiruzen’s final sacrifice. The elders subsequently ask him to become the Fifth Hokage; he later travels with Naruto to seek Tsunade and urges her to return as Konoha’s leader 275 276 277 282 286.
The Seven-Tails Escort
Jiraiya exposes impostors attempting to abduct Kaede, the Seven-Tails jinchūriki, and fights Kabuto while the other defenders face Obito and White Zetsu. Even with Fukasaku and Shima, he cannot defeat Kabuto’s Perfect Sage Mode 349 350 351.
Obito captures Kaede. Kabuto escapes after reanimating recently killed Konoha shinobi, forcing Jiraiya to remain behind and deal with his revived comrades rather than pursue him 351.
Amegakure Investigation and Fabricated Death
Reports of the Rinnegan revive Jiraiya’s doubts about the Child of Destiny. He infiltrates Amegakure alone, unaware that the city’s surveillance system is monitoring him and directing his investigation 367 368 369.
At Red Cloud Farm, Yahiko reveals that Amegakure’s accepted history is false and that the Akatsuki has secretly served the village. Yahiko defeats and wounds Jiraiya, after which Tetsuya appears, seals his chakra, and transports him to the Land of Grass 370 371 372.
While Jiraiya listens to Jigen explain the shinobi world’s origins, Tetsuya publishes a false report of his death. Tsunade and Naruto grieve, while rival villages treat Konoha’s apparent loss of a major fighter as an opportunity for war 373.
Return to the Battlefield
Tetsuya eventually frees Jiraiya, restores his chakra, and gives him Orochimaru’s reanimation scroll. Jiraiya returns with Gamabunta, announces that he never died, and identifies Tetsuya as the architect of the false report 390 393 394.
When Kabuto surrounds him and Tsunade with reanimated Kage, Jiraiya uses the scroll to summon three former Hokage. He later suffers severe injuries fighting Obito, whose Dual Rinnegan repels his attacks. Madara removes him into Kamui, and Naruto subsequently confirms that he is unconscious rather than dead 397 405 419.
Aftermath and the Final Prophecy
While recovering, Jiraiya hears Naruto’s account of Kaguya’s revival and the hidden forces behind the war. Later, he advises Tsunade to delay the Daimyo’s order to retrieve Chiba Ryo, recognizing that Konoha cannot safely challenge the powers connected to the Land of Grass 434 437.
At Mount Myōboku, he apologizes for failing to fulfill the prophecy. Gamamaru instead tells him that the future has changed and that peace will soon arrive, then dies. Jiraiya initially prepares to defend the mountain from Kaguya, but stops after recognizing her; she leaves without harming the inhabitants 437 438.
Jiraiya later keeps Fukasaku and Shima informed by letter about another war, the world’s unification, the revival of the dead, and Hashirama’s dissolution of Konoha 456.
