The Sunwell was a reservoir of powerful magical energy that encompassed all of Quel'Thalas. The High Elves had created it using a vial of sacred water that Illidan Stormrage had taken from the Well of Eternity.

This alone showed just how powerful the Well of Eternity had been in ancient times. Created by the Titans, it had practically been the source of Azeroth's power. Had it not exploded, the magical civilization of the present would have been even more magnificent. The immensely powerful Sunwell had come from just one vial of its waters. How many such vials could the entire Well of Eternity have held? The number was simply beyond measure.

The magic hidden within the well sustained and strengthened Azeroth's High Elves, so they had built Silvermoon City nearby. As their power continued to grow, they enchanted Eversong Woods, bathing it in eternal spring. Elven mages erected what they called Rune Stones along the borders of Quel'Thalas. These enormous stones formed a magical shield, concealing the elves' magic from covetous eyes beyond the world while also protecting their land from invasion.
