Evely was deeply interested in uniting the Humans. Unlike others, he did not dismiss that great undertaking or give it little thought, content with their current lives.

The powerful Trolls were bound to clash with humanity. Only after eliminating them could the Humans develop in peace.
Thus, after uniting humanity, joining forces with the High Elves to attack the Trolls would follow naturally. There was no real need for Rex to arrange it.
Still, Rex mentioned it, though he did not particularly care what Evely ultimately did. Once Rex left, he would have no way to restrain Evely. All that mattered was that Evely inherited the name Thoradin.
