Background / History
Transmigration and Escape
Ning Que awakens in the body of an ordinary Great Li soldier during proceedings against him at the imperial palace. The original soldier had survived battle and earned military merit, only to learn that his fiancée had been selected for a marriage alliance with the enemy Mara Dynasty. His attempt to demand an explanation led to his arrest 1.
Ning Que openly challenges Minister Wang Yong’s claim that sacrificing a commoner woman is an honor. He questions why the ruling families do not bear the cost themselves and argues that a dynasty dependent on such sacrifices has no future. Wang Yong condemns him to death, while fellow prisoners admire his defiance 1.
The Background Editing System activates shortly before his execution. Its first edit alters cause and effect, establishing him as the lost son of Flowing Sand’s missing leader, Ning Yuanzhou. A dragon-shaped jade pendant authenticates this identity, prompting Mu Lingfeng to order his rescue. Yin Jiuyou carries him away from the execution ground, and Ning Que vows to overthrow Great Li 1 2 4.
Lotus Town
In Lotus Town, Ning Que helps He Hua escape the men exploiting her debt. At Treasure Abundance Hall, its owner Qian Zhao admits that he targeted her after she rejected him. Ning Que refuses a belated offer to waive the debt because it would leave her family vulnerable after his departure. He kills Qian Zhao and distributes the hall’s money 6 7.
Rather than abandon the town when soldiers occupy it, Ning Que chooses to fight, partly to repay He Hua’s shelter and warm porridge. He then joins Flowing Sand’s Qingzhou Branch, whose leaders recognize his pendant and acknowledge him as Juzi. After the branch destroys Black Kui Stronghold, he supplies weapons for its hundred-plus members and proposes acting before the corrupt magistrate can retaliate 8 10 11 12.
His forces defeat the local troops and secure Commander Huang Tong’s surrender. Ning Que executes Magistrate Qian Taizhong, whose cooperation with bandits had helped oppress the town, and discovers substantial hidden wealth beneath the government office. He begins considering the throne as a means of ensuring that nobody can take his wife again 15.
Before leaving, he releases Huang Tong, hoping that exposure to the dynasty’s corruption may change his allegiance. Qiao Musheng remains behind with men to secure Lotus Town as a Flowing Sand base 16.
Qingzhou and Zhuge Qing
Ning Que enters Qingzhou under a disguise prepared by Mu Yuwei. A blind storyteller’s account of the marriage alliance renews his concern for his fiancée, but the storyteller gives no clear answer about whether she is alive 18.
At the Flower Delight House, Ning Que encounters Zhuge Qing disguised as a male scholar. The courtesan Liu Ningzhi attempts to implant a Heartless Gu in him so that he can be used to murder Zhuge Qing. He destroys the gu, kills Liu’s apparent body, and escapes with Zhuge Qing. The absence of a kill notification makes him suspect that Liu has survived 19 20 21 22 35.
With Qingzhou sealed and multiple factions hunting Zhuge Qing, Ning Que shelters her at an inn. His group initially intends to use her presence to persuade her father, Governor Zhuge Jingcheng, to open the gates. Ning Que also proposes posing as bounty hunters to eliminate the escorts and hired fighters pursuing her 24 26 27 28.
When the group attempts to leave, Zhuge Qing chooses to join Flowing Sand despite its declared intention to overthrow Great Li. Ning Que kills Tong Chengkun with the escort leader’s own saber, defeats Chai Feiying’s attack, and kills the Yin Lotus Cult’s Saintess and Holy Mother. He protects Zhuge Qing while encouraging her to defend herself, then spares Black Qilin at her request 33 34 35 36 37.
During the battle, an unidentified swordsman offers to take Ning Que into a “whole new world.” Ning Que refuses because he still has responsibilities to fulfill. The encounter nevertheless triggers a new background-editing condition 38.
Flowing Sand’s main force surrounds Qingzhou, making continued resistance increasingly dangerous. Zhuge Jingcheng ultimately opens the gates, allowing Ning Que’s exhausted group to reunite with the organization 39.
Succession and the Second Background
At Water-Moon Grotto-Heaven, Ning Que takes Ning Yuanzhou’s stone throne. Mu Lingfeng and nearly ten thousand followers kneel to acknowledge him as Juzi. Although he accepts the responsibility, he privately regards Flowing Sand as a temporary system-created background rather than an identity to which he is emotionally bound 44.
His second edit establishes him as a personal disciple of the Fallen Star Pavilion who was punished with ten years of wandering outside the mountain. The generated history states that pavilion disciples have begun searching for him after his failure to return 44.
A concealed letter in Ning Yuanzhou’s statue reveals that his father is alive and directs him toward Star Pavilion. Ning Que presents this discovery to Flowing Sand when Giant Hammer questions his leadership, giving the organization a concrete hope of recovering its former leader 44 45.
Skeleton Desert Rescue Mission
At Star Pavilion, Shi Guangling reveals that Ning Yuanzhou is imprisoned in the Skeleton Desert. Ning Que also learns that Wang Tianque, the Minister of Personnel’s son, captured his father with a private army. He resolves to rescue Ning Yuanzhou and kill Wang Tianque 46 47.
Despite his followers’ objections, Ning Que travels alone to conceal the operation. Flowing Sand fabricates a record claiming that he murdered thirty-six people, ensuring that he will be sent into the desert’s deepest region. This criminal history is an infiltration cover, not an account of an actual massacre 47 49.
After receiving his second background’s rewards, Ning Que hears soldiers discuss his father’s repeated torture. He kills an officer who mocks their fate and breaks his shackles. Once placed among the desert prisoners, he asks about Ning Yuanzhou, encounters Qin Qisha, and accepts help from Yi Tao. Yi Tao’s recollection of a woman transported from Great Li into Mara gives him another possible lead concerning his fiancée 48 49 50.
Appearance
- Handsome natural face: Removing his disguise reveals a handsome face, which he later temporarily conceals again to expose his deception of Tong Chengkun 32 33.
- Bronze-toned transformation: Integrating the beginner’s gift makes his formerly damaged body sturdier and gives it a gleaming bronze hue 1.
- Ordinary-looking disguise: Mu Yuwei gives him an inconspicuous face for entering Qingzhou. He complains about its plainness but accepts that a handsome disguise would attract attention 18.
- Composed bearing: His calm behavior amid fighting causes Qian Zhao to mistake him for a powerful family’s young master 7.
Personality
Ning Que is outspoken against elite hypocrisy and the exploitation of commoners. His anger at the marriage alliance rests on both personal loss and his recognition of how powerless people are treated. Nevertheless, he does not consistently present himself as a selfless hero: his defense of Lotus Town is partly repayment for He Hua’s kindness, and he initially regards Zhuge Qing chiefly as useful leverage 1 8 29.
He combines composure, secrecy, and calculated deception with decisive violence. He conceals suspicion behind flirtatious behavior, withholds his identity when necessary, and enjoys the practical benefits of earning Karma Points. His ruthlessness is selective: he releases Huang Tong, allows Zhuge Qing an opportunity to leave, and spares Black Qilin at her request 16 20 27 35 37.
His attitude toward inherited obligations changes with circumstance. At his father’s memorial, he feels little personal connection to the identity supplied by the system. After learning that Ning Yuanzhou is alive, however, he commits to a dangerous solo rescue and reacts fiercely to news of his torture 44 47 48.
Abilities & Skills
Background Editing System
The system alters Ning Que’s background and personal relationships by changing cause and effect. At Level 1, edits assign random identities; choosing between options or directly customizing a background requires upgrades 1 2.
- Karma economy: Deaths connected to him award points according to the target’s status and strength. Points fund background edits, shop purchases, prize draws, and upgrades 1 15.
- Follower contributions: Kills by Flowing Sand members—including Yin Jiuyou and Zhuge Qing—can award him points 7 36.
- Completion requirements: An edited identity comes with circumstances and objectives he must resolve himself. Higher background completion produces better rewards 8.
- Random triggers: Encounters with particular people, items, or events can increase the probability of a new background edit 38.
- Kill verification: The absence of a notification helps him recognize that Liu Ningzhi’s apparent death was not genuine 22 35.
