Su Enxi sat sideways in the back seat like a lazy cat. In this perilous Nibelungen, all communications had been cut off. Worried that they would lose each other if they split up, they had decided to move together.
"Boss said to tell Lu Mingfei secretly—how are you planning to do that?" Su Enxi asked.
The two chatted idly.
"I'll just slip a little card under the door." Mai Sakatoku's plan was simple and unadorned.
Rain pattered against the roof, and the wipers swept back and forth without pause.
As she drove, Mai Sakatoku suddenly felt that something was off.
She instinctively hit the brakes. The tires gave a sharp screech against the asphalt. She stared ahead, then blankly looked to both sides of the road, obvious confusion appearing on her face.
There should have been the familiar city buildings, streetlights, and GG signs on either side of the road. Instead, what met her eyes were towering ancient trees. They were absurdly huge, their branches twisted together, their canopies layered one over another and pressing down as though they might swallow the entire road at any moment.
Su Enxi was jolted by the brake and let out a groggy yawn, her voice thick with sleep. "What is it? Are we there?"
"Potato Chip, Potato Chip." Mai Sakatoku's voice was full of bewilderment. "I think—we took a wrong turn."
"Then just turn around." Su Enxi had yet to realize the seriousness of the situation.
"You've lived in China longer than I have, and you know this city better," Mai Sakatoku said seriously, staring at the ridiculous giant trees outside
