Background

Lu Mingfei was a pessimistic Shilan High School student with poor grades and little confidence in his future. After failing to gain admission to the University of Chicago, he expected to enter an ordinary domestic undergraduate program; his family had also considered sending him abroad, but foreign schools had rejected him. He spent much of his time playing StarCraft and talking with online friends instead of studying. 1171

Although Lu Mingfei initially believes Kassel College recruited him for inexplicable reasons, Amon later reveals that his parents were Kassel alumni and that the College had acted in response to their request. The revelation makes Lu Mingfei feel, perhaps for the first time, that his absent parents still cared about him. 1175

He secretly loved his classmate Chen Wenwen for years but lacked the courage to openly pursue her. His insecurity was apparent even when Su Xiaoqiang offered to switch seats so he could sit closer to Chen Wenwen; he panicked and refused. 1176 1177
