Background / History
Questioning the Massacre Survivors
As a newcomer to the Inspection Office, Xin Ya handles peripheral duties in the investigation of the July 24 massacre. By the time she interviews Lu Zhan, she has already questioned fourteen other surviving civilian witnesses. Wang Yang and Wesker assist her because their Public Security Office oversees the district containing the Wutu Gang, which raised Lu Zhan 1 2.
Xin Ya uses the threat of lifelong medical debt to encourage cooperation, while reassuring Lu Zhan that his background alone will not make him a suspect. When he becomes distressed by his inability to remember the attacker, she allows him to stop rather than force further recollection. He then unexpectedly remembers two mechanical-looking antennae on the creature’s head 1 2.
After studying his drawing, Xin Ya recognizes that the antennae’s precise markings contain knowledge an ordinary factory worker should not possess. She considers the fragment valuable enough to secure her internship. As a reward, she reveals that his medical screening found no genetic contamination and confirmed his aptitude to become an Armored Warrior—information she had previously intended to withhold. She warns him that pursuing that path could be fatal 3.
Identifying the Receiver
At a task-force meeting, Xin Ya defends Lu Zhan’s drawing by presenting his background and aptitude-test results. His antenna fragment does not fit any of the thirty-five beast species suggested by the other survivors’ recollections. She identifies the antennae as belonging to a rare wide-area information receiver, manufactured only in the inner city 15.
The discovery frightens her colleagues, who regard an inner-city investigation as potentially deadly. Liu Yiyang proposes controlling Lu Zhan or having the Wutu Gang silence him permanently. Xin Ya is shocked by the proposal but yields to the team’s pressure and calls the medical center. She learns that Lu Zhan has already been discharged and registered for military recruitment in District 13 15.
The team assumes it has seven days before he enters training. However, Lu Zhan obtains immediate admission through Xu Dayong, placing him inside the Training Center before the investigators can intervene 15 14 16.
Containing the Discovery
Xin Ya is sidelined from the beast investigation and assigned to contain the consequences of the antenna discovery. Under Ouyang Hao’s instructions, she imprisons Wang Yang and Wesker separately because both saw Lu Zhan’s original drawing. She cannot reach Lu Zhan inside the Training Center and avoids contacting him lest her questions reveal the fragment’s importance 37.
She subsequently apologizes and promises to follow orders. Her inquiries establish that the Training Center’s classes and library do not cover the receiver, but she identifies a possible exception: instructor Lu Guanhong, formerly a Third-Level Researcher at the Eighth Research Institute. His former clearance may have exposed him to the device. Ouyang Hao chooses containment over confrontation with the military and plans to return Xin Ya to regular work 38.
Conflict with the Wutu Gang
The Wutu Gang misinterprets the detentions as retaliation over Lu Zhan. Ma Yancheng speculates about romantic feelings, while other leaders suggest Xin Ya wanted to exploit his talent. Neither explanation reflects her actual objective of suppressing knowledge of the antennae 37 48.
Xin Ya refuses the gang’s attempts to negotiate or bribe her into releasing Wang Yang, maintaining that she is enforcing the law impartially. She suspects Lu Zhan’s repeated use of her name helped create the misunderstanding. After rejoining the task force, she helps seek additional commissioners, but unrest throughout the outer city leaves little manpower available 46 47 48.
Appearance
Personality
Xin Ya combines genuine sympathy with calculated interrogation tactics. Lu Zhan’s refugee background softens her manner, and she stops questioning when his missing memories cause severe distress. Nevertheless, she pressures him through medical costs and uses concealed lie-detection equipment, making her kindness less straightforward than it initially appears 1 2 3.
She is eager to prove herself and delighted when her colleagues recognize her contribution. That ambition leads her to disclose the receiver’s inner-city origin without anticipating the political danger. Although disturbed by the suggestion of killing Lu Zhan, she complies under pressure; afterward, she feels unfairly blamed but adopts a contrite attitude to preserve her place on the team 15 38.
Her refusal of the Wutu Gang’s bribe is firm but tied to the specific demands of the antenna case. She acknowledges that she would prefer not to offend the gang over other matters and draws confidence from the task force’s backing 48.
Abilities & Skills
Material Alchemy Knowledge
- Recognizes that the intricate markings in Lu Zhan’s drawing are technically meaningful rather than casual inventions 3.
- Identifies the antennae as part of a wide-area information receiver and knows its production is restricted to the inner city 15.
- Knows more about the receiver than Ouyang Hao, prompting him to question her about who else might recognize it 38.
Interrogation and Evidence Assessment
- Conducts witness interviews with practiced ease despite her newcomer status 1.
- Checks Lu Zhan’s account against evidence from the attack scene 2.
- Uses his background and medical records to defend the credibility of his recovered memory 15.
- Employs devices that monitor life fluctuations to detect lies; several are concealed among his medical equipment 3.
Investigative Research and Containment
- Investigates the Training Center’s curriculum, library, and Lu Guanhong’s professional history 38.
- Arranges separate detention for witnesses who saw the original antenna drawing 37.
- Recognizes that Inspection Office authority does not permit direct intervention inside the Training Center 37.
Relationships
- Lu Zhan — Massacre survivor and witness. She reveals his Armored Warrior aptitude as a reward, but later participates in efforts to contain his knowledge. He uses her name to obtain favorable treatment and delay the Wutu Gang’s contract 3 5 9 37.
- Ouyang Hao — Task-force captain and superior. He sidelines her after the receiver discovery, directs her containment work, and later permits her return 37 38 48.
- Wang Yang — Public Security Office assistant and Wutu Gang informant. She detains him after he sees Lu Zhan’s drawing; his criminal connections provide grounds for investigation 1 36 37 38.
- Wesker — Public Security Office assistant, detained separately for knowing about the drawing. He is not a Wutu Gang member, though Xin Ya reports that he colludes with other gangs 1 36 37 38.
- Liu Yiyang — Task-force colleague whose proposal to silence Lu Zhan horrifies her. She nevertheless makes the requested inquiries under collective pressure 15.
- Wutu Gang — Adversarial faction seeking the release of its imprisoned informant. Its leaders repeatedly mistake her containment assignment for a personal dispute involving Lu Zhan 37 46 47 48.
