Ch. 1Chapter 1
Chapter 1 Summary
- Shu’s fall: In the third year of Yongsheng, Great Qi’s army advances on Shu’s capital. Shu’s emperor plans to surrender, and the families of senior officials are to be taken into custody for the crown prince, Zhao Xuan, to judge.
- Du Yizhen’s predicament: Du Yizhen, the chancellor’s beautiful and sheltered eldest daughter, learns she will be taken with her family. Frightened by rumors that Zhao Xuan is ruthless and indifferent to women, she understands there is no way to escape the encircled city.
- A father’s warning: Chancellor Du Heng confirms Shu will surrender and tells Yizhen to endure her situation, avoid defying Zhao Xuan, and focus on staying alive. Unable to protect her, he feels helpless as she faces the coming occupation.
- The first encounter: The next morning, Great Qi’s cavalry enters the capital. Yizhen joins her family outside their residence, dressed simply. Zhao Xuan notices her tearful, frightened face as he passes; she lowers her eyes in alarm. He orders his soldiers to house the captured families properly and forbids mistreatment.
- The story begins: Shu’s surrender ends the old order and brings Yizhen and Zhao Xuan into each other’s lives. Their first brief exchange of glances foreshadows the emotional entanglement to come.
Character Development and Interactions
- Du Yizhen is gentle, timid, and unused to danger, having been sheltered by her family. Her fear is genuine, but she faces the loss of her home and freedom with quiet composure.
- Zhao Xuan is introduced through his fearsome reputation and imposing appearance, yet his first explicit order is to treat the captured households properly, hinting at a more complicated character.
- Du Heng loves his daughter and sympathizes with her fear, but political defeat leaves him powerless to protect her. He offers practical advice instead.
- Yizhen and Zhao Xuan have no direct conversation; their first interaction is a moment of mutual awareness. Her tearful appearance leaves a lasting impression on him.
Significant Themes
- War and vulnerability: The fall of a kingdom overturns private lives, leaving civilians—especially women—at the mercy of victors.
- Appearance versus reality: Zhao Xuan’s cold reputation contrasts with his order against mistreatment, while Yizhen’s famed beauty does not give her control over her fate.
- The beginning of an unequal bond: Their story begins amid conquest, fear, and forced proximity, foreshadowing tension between power and personal feeling.
