And so, having attained the body of a Great Shaman, Nine Li studied spells under Gungun for another three years. Three years later, with some modest accomplishments to his name, he followed Quan Jiu to Mount Kunlun to attempt the formations, hoping to become a disciple of the Primordial Heavenly Venerable.
Originally, Houtu had wanted Gungun to go along, so that if Nine Li needed help, Gungun could lend a hand, but...
Gungun was unwilling to go to Mount Kunlun. Gungun had promised Tongtian to find him a mount, but had been so busy over the years that the task remained unfinished. If Gungun went and Tongtian asked, "You bear, where is my mount?" how was Gungun supposed to answer? Surely not, "I've come to be your mount, Saint"?
So it was better not to go. Using the excuse that Nine Li had already completed his training and there was nothing else Gungun could help with-truly nothing-Gungun wriggled out of the matter and left Quan Jiu to take his son to seek a master himself.
Still, although Gungun had not accompanied them, after a fairly comprehensive assessment of Nine Li's strength, talent, good fortune, and other qualities, Gungun felt... Nine Li's chances of securing a master should be quite good.
As for whether anything unexpected would happen, that would depend on heaven's will.
