Background / History

Birth and Crown Prince Succession

Ao Yue was born with a supreme destiny described as no less exalted than the Ancestral Dragon’s. His absorption of half the Ancestral Dragon’s magic power created hostility between them. The Ancestral Dragon repeatedly suppressed him and initially refused to appoint him Crown Prince; Torch Dragon rallied the elders, mediated the dispute, and secured Ao Yue’s succession 3 7 77 198.

Although raised and recognized as the Ancestral Dragon’s son, Ao Yue is later established to be Taiyi’s biological son. He and Yinglong share a mother but have different fathers, a distinction that becomes central to his struggle over identity 623 889.

Rescue at Mount Buzhou

Kunpeng ambushed Ao Yue outside dragon territory, grievously injuring him before their prolonged battle. Gungun interrupted the attempted killing, and Houtu defended him and used earth power to treat his wounds. Gungun then dispelled Kunpeng’s sinister magic with the Vermilion Bird Banner and supplied a Dragon Pearl to repair Ao Yue’s damaged soul 3 4 5 15.

Taiyi ultimately stopped Kunpeng and took Ao Yue to the Heavenly Court. He expended his own origin power to heal him completely, helped him assimilate the Ancestral Dragon’s power, and forged a weapon specifically for him. Ao Yue voluntarily joined the Demon Race to repay this kindness, offering to serve as Taiyi’s mount and adopting the title Great Sun Heavenly Dragon 6 13 17.

Service to the Demon Court

Taiyi appointed Ao Yue his Dharma Protector above the Demon Sages, entrusted him with the Six Heavens Guards, and granted unrestricted access to the Heavenly Court’s treasury. Such favor attracted criticism from Dijun and doubts from senior demons 22 23 102.

A century after his rescue, Ao Yue brought Gungun rare spirit fruits and a Bitter Bamboo shoot while attempting to recruit him into the Demon Race. The recruitment failed, and Houtu and Gonggong attacked Ao Yue over his allegiance. Meng Zhang intervened to protect him, arguing that Demon Race membership did not make him an enemy if he had never attacked the Witches 15 16 19 22.

Ao Yue subsequently commanded 300,000 demon troops against Penglai Immortal Island. Alongside Meng Zhang, he attacked the Eastern King and devastated the Immortal Court. Taiyi also supported efforts to restore Ao Yue’s authority over the Dragon Race against Ao Kai’s opposition 23 30 32.

Defense of Dragon Independence

Ao Yue returned urgently when he learned that Torch Dragon was nearing death, reflecting his attachment to the uncle who had protected his claim to succession 77.

When seeking treatment for elders afflicted by extreme yin cold, Ao Yue approached Gungun to borrow the Vermilion Bird Banner. Their negotiations instead led to a partnership linking the Dragon Race’s fortune with the Iron-Eating Beast Clan’s. Dijun treated this connection to a Witch-aligned clan as disobedience and sentenced Ao Yue to eighty-one rounds of solar-fire punishment 95 96 102.

Ao Yue accepted personal punishment but refused to bring the dragons into the Demon Race, insisting that his debt was his own. Following the Demon Race’s attack on the East Sea, he resigned as Taiyi’s mount and Dharma Protector. He declined to join the Witch Race, gathered the bodies of fallen dragons, and returned home to protect his ancestral lands 102 144.

Appearance

Ao Yue usually takes the form of a handsome young man with dragon horns, while his dragon form is purple and immense 3 14 95.

  • Dragon horns: Remain visible in his humanoid form 14 284 568.
  • Clothing: Wears purple divine armor, white immortal robes, purple dragon robes, or a white dragon robe according to the occasion 14 95 284 889.
  • Battle attire: Appears in purple-and-gold armor with loose hair reaching his waist during his confrontation with Haotian 568.
  • Solar halo: A great solar halo shines behind him when he reports to Taiyi 22.
  • Dragon scale: His dragon form is described as several million zhang long on his arrival at the Iron-Eating Forest 95.
  • Former wings: Possessed wings with concealed golden coloration and Golden Crow feathers. He severed them after confronting Taiyi about his origins 287 288.

Personality

Ao Yue is restrained, courteous, and strongly conscious of obligation. He repays Gungun’s assistance with increasingly valuable gifts and initially treats service to Taiyi as the proper answer to a life-saving debt. Even when opposing Houtu, he acknowledges her earlier kindness and tries to avoid fighting her 13 15 19 47.

His loyalty has limits where the Dragon Race’s independence is concerned. He accepts punishment rather than surrender his people, leaves Taiyi’s service after the East Sea invasion, and consistently distinguishes his personal obligations from those of the entire race 102 144.

Government and clan responsibilities leave him privately unhappy. He envies Gungun’s carefree life, later grows weary of authority, and ultimately seeks retirement so he can experience the world rather than spend his life governing it 15 664 669 780.

As Heavenly Sovereign, he combines political calculation with forceful enforcement. He values popular legitimacy in Xuanyuan’s campaign, recognizes attempts to obstruct his succession plans, and sometimes conceals mercy behind harsh public judgments. He is nevertheless willing to authorize soul-searching and coercive interrogation when investigating threats to the court 432 781 876 888 889.

Marriage exposes a less composed side of him. Although he initially describes his match with Ao Cunxin as a practical arrangement, her past relationship with Yang Jian troubles him. He privately doubts Gungun’s advice that emotional attachment can simply be dismissed because she is a concubine 725 734 736.

Abilities & Skills

Dragon Transformation and Combat

Ao Yue can shift between an innate Dao body and an enormous divine dragon. His combat power draws on the fully integrated magic power inherited from the Ancestral Dragon 16 30 95.

  • Uses purple fire against the Eastern King 30.
  • Shatters Houtu’s earth-powered rock giant 19.
  • Overwhelms Haotian’s defensive pagoda with the Dragon Fang Sword and then destroys it with a punch 568.
  • Is described as the strongest beneath the Saints at the time of his confrontation with Haotian, but recognizes that this leaves him unable to defy Hongjun directly 568.
  • Remains at the Three-Corpse Quasi-Saint bottleneck for many years without an increase in magic power 664.

Stellar Power

Ao Yue’s birth and inherited power are closely connected to the stars. Taiyi uses the Chaos Bell to summon primordial stars when forging his Dragon God Heaven-Slaying Halberd 3 17.

  • Calls down a massive pillar of star-powered lightning with the halberd 32.
  • Commands demon troops to establish the Lesser Stellar Formation during the Penglai campaign 32.

Three Corpses and the Great Sun Heavenly Dragon

Ao Yue completes the three-corpse severance through the expenditure of merit. His self corpse bears the name Great Sun Heavenly Dragon, previously used as Ao Yue’s own title 13 305 573.

  • Can act separately while Ao Yue handles state affairs 573.
  • Uses dragon breath, spells, and the power of laws against Haotian 573.
  • Wounds Haotian and destroys the Demon Division Hall, though it also sustains injuries 573.
  • Places a curse on Haotian causing forty-nine sword strikes through the heart every day for the rest of his life 573.

Soul Division and Reincarnation

Ao Yue can split a fragment from his primordial spirit and give it an independent identity. He names one such fragment Xuanyuan and seeks its reincarnation into the Youxiong Tribe 356.

  • Secures Tongtian’s support for Xuanyuan’s attempt to become Human Emperor 359.
  • Requires Houtu’s cooperation to reincarnate the fragment through the established reincarnation system 359 360.
  • Cannot assume that his divided soul will inherit his original combat strength; matching Chi You becomes a major difficulty 364 365.
  • Refuses to reincarnate his original self because becoming Human Emperor would confine him to Fire Cloud Cave and cost him his existing position 365.

Fortune and Human Sovereignty

Ao Yue treats fortune as a long-term foundation for the Dragon Race rather than a reward tied to one dynasty 669 780.

  • Links Dragon Race fortune with the Iron-Eating Beast Clan’s 96.
  • Uses vital essence from the Ancestral Dragon Pearl and Human Emperor authority carried by the Xuanyuan Sword to create flood dragons and give them human forms 669.
  • Infuses those dragons with the wisdom of human sages before dispersing them across the land 669.
  • Seeks an enduring relationship in which human rulers identify themselves as True Dragon Sons of Heaven, allowing the dragons to share in human fortune despite dynastic changes 780.

Perception, Divination, and Interrogation

Ao Yue can detect concealed beings and investigate through both divination and spiritual techniques 14 734 889.

  • Sees through Gungun’s invisibility spell 14.
  • Immediately senses Houtu and Gungun entering East Sea waters 156.
  • Performs divination concerning Yang Jian, Lu’er, and Haotian, although his suspicions lead him to reject an unwelcome result 734.
  • Knows the Netherworld’s Soul-Searching Spirit-Seizing Art, which he prepares to use on Nezha before Taiyi’s arrival interrupts him 889.

Government and Military Command

Ao Yue directs large armies and manages the Heavenly Court’s daily administration 23 568 573.

  • Commands 300,000 demon troops during the Penglai campaign 23.
  • Coordinates the Heavenly River Navy, Dragon Race forces, and Four Divine Generals to contain Haotian 568.
  • Issues warrants recognized throughout the Primordial World 876.
  • Orders patrol reforms and a Stellar Restrictive Formation after the Bright Demon Beast breaches court security 875.
  • Exercises practical restraint around Saint-affiliated figures, assigning Spirit Pearl Child’s case to Soaring Serpent rather than risking a poorly judged confrontation with Nuwa 482.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Dragon God Heaven-Slaying Halberd — Forged specifically for him by Taiyi using primordial stellar power. Channels star-powered lightning; Ao Yue offers it as collateral when requesting the Vermilion Bird Banner 17 32 95.
  • Dragon Fang Sword — Torch Dragon’s innate Numinous Treasure, inherited by Ao Yue. He uses it to damage Haotian’s pagoda and later gives it to Yinglong as part of the leadership transfer 568 780.
  • Xuanyuan Sword — Carries Human Emperor aura and authority, which Ao Yue uses when creating and investing flood dragons 669.
  • Ancestral Dragon Pearl — Borrowed from Yinglong for the dragon-seeding plan and sent among humans. Ao Yue later returns it to Yinglong after his mortal incarnation dies 669 779.
  • Human Race’s historical scroll — Used in the dragon-seeding ritual to reveal human sages and draw upon their wisdom 669.
  • Azure Dragon Realm — A refuge constructed under Meng Zhang’s supervision at Ao Yue’s command. Houses the relocated Ancestral Dragon Hall and forms part of his preparations for catastrophe 157 158 285.

Relationships

  • Eastern Emperor Taiyi — Biological father, former sovereign, and rescuer. Their bond begins as gratitude and service, becomes strained by the dragons’ treatment and concealed parentage, and remains politically sensitive long afterward 17 144 623 889 890.
  • Ancestral Dragon — Acknowledged father during Ao Yue’s upbringing. Resented the power Ao Yue absorbed at birth and opposed his appointment as Crown Prince 77 198.
  • Torch Dragon — Uncle and protector who secured his succession. Ao Yue is deeply attached to him and inherits his Dragon Fang Sword 77 568.
  • Yinglong — Younger maternal half-brother and chosen successor. Ao Yue personally guides his cultivation, entrusts him to Tongtian’s teaching, shares fortune with him, and transfers Dragon Race leadership to him 155 157 564 623 780.
  • Bi’an — Younger dragon brother whom Ao Yue holds in high regard. Serves as a trusted host and later carries out his confidential imprisonment orders 155 156 888.
  • Gungun — Rescuer, close friend, and fellow ruler of the Heavenly Court. Their relationship includes gifts, clan cooperation, political bargaining, teasing, and mutual aid; Gungun also schemes to delay Ao Yue’s retirement 47 96 313 751 781.
  • Houtu — Early rescuer and later political ally. Their relationship passes through conflict over his Demon Race allegiance before she supports Xuanyuan’s reincarnation under negotiated terms 4 19 359 360.
  • Meng Zhang — Loyal protector acting under Torch Dragon’s instructions. Defends Ao Yue against the Ancestral Witches and supervises the Azure Dragon refuge 19 22 157.
  • Ao Cunxin — Concubine and Heavenly Consort. Their practical marriage develops emotional complications involving her past relationship with Yang Jian and her suspicions about Ao Yue 725 736 751.
  • Xuanyuan — Reincarnated divided soul through whom Ao Yue seeks the Human Emperor’s position and a share of humanity’s fortune 356 359 360.
  • Tongtian — Yinglong’s master and a powerful supporter. Backs Xuanyuan’s campaign and opposes measures that would diminish Ao Yue’s authority 359 564 618.
  • Bai Ze — Respected Demon Sage whom Ao Yue unsuccessfully invites into the Heavenly Court. Later returns to reorganize the Demon Division under Taiyi’s direction 23 432 781.
  • Kunpeng — Ambusher and longstanding rival. Ao Yue strengthens himself partly to prevent Kunpeng from taking over the Demon Race and invading the Four Seas 3 4 305.
  • Haotian — Rival claimant to Heavenly Court authority. Their conflict escalates after Haotian kills dragon soldiers, prompting Ao Yue’s direct retaliation and his self corpse’s lasting curse 568 573.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Refuge Building and Hidden Parentage

Ao Yue prepares for a prophesied catastrophe by ordering Meng Zhang to build the Azure Dragon Realm. Although the Ancestral Dragon Hall is relocated, he initially remains outside so he can protect his people immediately when disaster strikes 157 158 285.

Gungun and Soaring Serpent investigate his ancestry inside the Landscape, Rivers, State, and Earth Diagram. The younger Ao Yue encountered there is a diagram-world counterpart who does not know Gungun. Gungun attacks him with a Pangu Banner to expose his dragon form, revealing wings that Soaring Serpent identifies as Golden Crow Wings 198.

The original Ao Yue later glimpses Golden Crow feathers while attempting to sever his self corpse. He visits the imprisoned Taiyi for an explanation, but Taiyi refuses to clarify their relationship. Ao Yue chooses his duty as the Ancestral Dragon’s son, rejects Gungun’s proposal that he lead the Demon Race, and cuts off his wings before returning to the East Sea 287 288.

World Rescue and the New Heavenly Court

When Mount Buzhou collapses, Ao Yue transforms into a dragon and flies toward it to help save the world. Gungun also proposes that they share control of the Heavenly Court 302.

Ao Yue uses the merit subsequently gained to complete his three-corpse severance. He and Gungun conquer the Heavenly Court and become its joint rulers, with Ao Yue occupying the throne beside the Heavenly Emperor as Heavenly Sovereign 305 313 317.

Xuanyuan’s Human Emperor Campaign

Ao Yue splits off the soul that becomes Xuanyuan after recognizing humanity’s importance as the protagonists of Heaven and Earth. Tongtian pledges Jiejiao’s backing, requiring Yinglong to accompany Xuanyuan and receive a share of his fortune 356 359.

Houtu’s price for reincarnating the soul is a marriage to the Great Shaman Jiu Feng. Ao Yue reluctantly accepts on the basis that the divided soul, rather than his original self, will marry her. He then struggles to compensate for Xuanyuan’s enormous strength disadvantage against Chi You 360 364 365.

Ao Yue also guards Xuanyuan’s public legitimacy. He warns that open assistance from Bai Ze as a demon could destroy human confidence in Xuanyuan, and offers Bai Ze a Heavenly Court position as an alternative. Bai Ze refuses to abandon the Demon Race 432.

Haotian’s Challenge

Haotian’s killing of Ao Ming and other dragon soldiers provokes Ao Yue to trap and attack him. Ao Yue destroys the Haotian Pagoda, but Hongjun intervenes and confirms that Haotian must receive real governing authority alongside the court’s existing rulers 568.

Dissatisfied with Hongjun’s proposed punishment, Ao Yue sends the Great Sun Heavenly Dragon to retaliate. The self corpse wounds Haotian, destroys his hall, and imposes its daily sword-through-the-heart curse 573.

Human Unification and Qin

Ao Yue disperses flood dragons and the Ancestral Dragon Pearl among humanity to encourage the emergence of a ruler capable of unification. He tells Yinglong that the eventual gains should belong to him and expresses his intention to surrender Dragon Race leadership once its future is secure 669.

When Ying Zheng receives the Pearl and becomes Qin’s king, Ao Yue authorizes Yinglong to reincarnate as Meng Yi and assist him without directly challenging Lü Buwei, Zhao Gongming’s mortal incarnation 718 725.

Ao Yue recognizes that Qin’s cruelty and accumulated karma make lasting rule unlikely, but considers its temporary share of unified fortune worthwhile. After Ying Zheng’s death, he explains that the Dragon Race’s connection is to humanity as a whole, not to the survival of Qin or any other dynasty 753 780.

Marriage and Succession

Ao Yue takes Ao Cunxin as a concubine in a comparatively modest ceremony. Government work immediately competes with married life, and dragon wedding customs persuade him to spend time with her despite the memorials awaiting his attention 725 731 736.

He later formally passes Dragon Race leadership to Yinglong and appoints him commander of the Heavenly Court’s Dragon Army. His intended gradual transfer of Heavenly Sovereign authority faces resistance from Gungun and Taiyi; Ao Yue correctly identifies the reorganized Demon Division as a force designed to make Yinglong’s succession difficult 780 781.

Chenxiang and the New Heavenly Laws

During Chenxiang’s challenge to the court, Ao Yue strengthens security, issues a realm-wide warrant, and investigates the prisoners’ unexplained rescue. He initially dismisses Taiyi as a possible rescuer, believing Taiyi would have no reason to oppose his decree 875 876 882.

Ao Yue publicly condemns Yang Jian and Nezha to the Land of No Return Across Ten Thousand Calamities, but secretly has Bi’an imprison them safely and send decoys instead. He also lets Guang Chengzi remain active so that his suspicious conduct can reveal further clues 888.

Taiyi’s voluntary confession shocks and angers Ao Yue. Later, a visit to Yuanshi’s incarnation clarifies that Chenxiang’s development is intended to test whether the New Heavenly Laws should emerge, rather than to overthrow Ao Yue or the court. Reassured, Ao Yue agrees to cooperate 890 900 901.

His latest documented concern is Wutian’s expected return in two hundred years. Troubled by Gungun’s apparent indifference, he summons Yinglong for a private discussion whose contents are not revealed 911.
