Only late into the night did the members of the Uchiha Clan disperse in twos and threes.

"Clan Leader Fugaku, Elder, why did you put me forward as clan leader without discussing it with me first?" Shin Uchiha asked before either of them could speak.
The Elder had only just settled into his seat. After taking a sip of tea, he said, "Clan Leader Fugaku proposed it first, and I agreed. The reason we didn't tell you beforehand was that we were afraid you'd refuse.
"Don't think I don't know you. If it hadn't been for an occasion like tonight, with that personality of yours, you'd never have let us rope you into becoming clan leader."
Having said his piece, the Elder resumed drinking his tea, looking rather pleased with himself.
Uchiha Fugaku spoke up then. "Shin, the Elder and I truly believe you're suited to lead the Uchiha Clan. We're a shinobi clan; strength speaks for itself. Yours surpassed both mine and the Elder's long ago. Besides, you're still young. Your future holds far more than what you've achieved now.
"Given the Uchiha Clan's current situation, this is precisely when we need to make a change. Having you become our clan leader, with your reputation as the strongest Uchiha, will give our people a much-needed boost in confidence.
"After what happened this time, I've also recognized my shortcomings. I really am not up to the task of leading the clan. That's why I discussed it with the Elder and put you forward. We both believe you can lead our people and bring glory to the Uchiha Clan."
