Background / History
Shisui is a descendant of Kagami Uchiha and was born and raised in Konoha. Hiruzen Sarutobi’s friendship with Kagami helps explain his longstanding warmth toward Shisui, who grows up largely under the Third Hokage’s watch and inherits the Will of Fire 6 7 27 43.
He and Qiu Shan Uchiha have been close friends since childhood. By the beginning of the story, Shisui is described as the strongest member of the Uchiha’s younger generation. He has recently awakened his Mangekyō Sharingan but has not disclosed it to anyone 2.
Following his death and resurrection, Shisui helps secure Whirlpool Island for the clan’s relocation, then undertakes intelligence missions with Itachi. After the Uchiha become independent of Konoha, he continues serving the clan under Qiu Shan’s leadership 44 52 93 105 270.
Appearance
- Ordinary eyes: Black when his Sharingan is inactive 37.
- Mangekyō pattern: A four-pointed shuriken formed from the spinning three tomoe 4 7.
- Family resemblance: His appearance and bearing remind Hiruzen of Kagami Uchiha 6.
- Weapon placement: Carries a tachi on his back 36.
Personality
Shisui is kindhearted and gentle, lacking the arrogance and overbearing manner associated with many of his clansmen. After missions, he sometimes retreats to a secluded riverside spot for quiet reflection 2.
His loyalty encompasses both the Uchiha and Konoha. He initially seeks reconciliation rather than separation and later accepts relocation only to prevent either side from being harmed. This restraint also governs his use of Kotoamatsukami: he changes Hiruzen’s hostility toward the Uchiha without enslaving him or disrupting the village’s leadership 4 7 43.
Shisui trusts Qiu Shan enough to share his most valuable technique and eventually risk permanent death for their plan. That trust does not erase his misgivings: he is uneasy when Qiu Shan reveals that he has controlled Fugaku, particularly because Fugaku is Itachi’s father 4 16 17 43.
Though initially naïve about the political sources of the clan’s predicament, Shisui accepts correction and shows practical judgment about concealing mind manipulation. Under direct coercion, he remains composed and refuses to surrender his independence to Danzō’s cursed seal 4 5 35 36.
His concern for Qiu Shan is reciprocal rather than passive. When he detects a new Izanagi safeguard in his eyes, he insists on knowing its cost to Qiu Shan and refuses to dismiss the possibility that his friend is sacrificing his own future to protect him 99 105.
On missions, Shisui is cautious and disciplined. He and Itachi detect chakra in Amegakure’s rain before it exposes them, and he later refuses an early return from the Land of Water because interrupting their carefully prepared cover could compromise their mission 242 270.
He shows compassion for persecuted people, particularly Haku, whose family’s destruction concerns him. His personal embarrassment about the Elder’s matchmaking does not amount to outright opposition: although he initially tries to avoid the introductions by requesting more missions, he acknowledges their purpose in increasing the independent clan’s population 270.
Abilities & Skills
Mangekyō Sharingan
Shisui’s Mangekyō specializes in genjutsu and raises his combat strength to Kage level 7 11.
- Greatly increases his chakra and genjutsu proficiency, sharpens perception, and strengthens ninjutsu 7.
- Heightened intuition allows him to detect concealed Root surveillance and recognize the operatives’ oppressive chakra 33.
- Its four-pointed-shuriken pattern is initially reproduced in Qiu Shan’s eyes when Qiu Shan copies his technique 4.
- Extreme use causes severe eye pain and bleeding; sustaining Susanoo also exhausts his mental energy 36 37.
- By the preparations for the Amegakure mission, he can notice an ocular technique newly sealed into his eyes 99.
- Overuse against the Six Paths of Pain leaves his eyes burning even though his physical injuries are comparatively minor. Qiu Shan’s clone provides treatment, but the remaining ocular strain must recover gradually 234.
- The Rinnegan counters most Sharingan-based genjutsu, severely reducing the effectiveness of both Shisui’s and Itachi’s usual techniques against Pain 229.
Kotoamatsukami
Both of Shisui’s Mangekyō eyes possess Kotoamatsukami, a genjutsu capable of permanently altering a target’s thoughts and will without their awareness 3.
- Political application: Subtly reduces Hiruzen’s suspicion and hostility toward the Uchiha, increasing his goodwill without imposing complete obedience 7 16.
- Cooldown: Each use requires at least ten years of recovery. His left eye still holds an unused activation when he entrusts his eyes to Qiu Shan 3 17.
- Concealment: Reports the Mangekyō’s general enhancements to Hiruzen while withholding its special ocular techniques 7.
- Tactical restraint: Avoids using it during the Root confrontation after recognizing that Danzō has prepared for his Mangekyō 35.
- Failure against Pain: Uses it during the Amegakure battle, but Pain merely stops briefly before recovering, without coming under his control 242.
- Explanation of the failure: Qiu Shan publicly attributes Pain’s resistance to the Rinnegan. Privately, he also reasons that Pain is a remotely controlled corpse and that the brief pause may have been an interruption in its connection rather than successful mind manipulation 242.
- Later availability: After the failed attempt on Pain, Shisui laments that he must wait more than ten years before using the dōjutsu again 243.
Qiu Shan’s copied version later receives a six-month recovery period through his system; this improvement is not attributed to Shisui’s own eyes 6. Subsequent reductions in Qiu Shan’s cooldown likewise concern his own evolving abilities, not an advancement of Shisui’s Kotoamatsukami 57 124.
Skeletal Susanoo
Shisui manifests a large, green skeletal Susanoo while poisoned and surrounded by Root operatives 36.
- Sweeps away attackers and deflects kunai, shuriken, and other thrown weapons 36 37.
- Forms skeletal arms capable of penetrating the cave wall and propelling him toward the exit 37.
- Cannot stop the poison spreading through his body. It disappears when the poison reaches his heart and he can no longer sustain it 37.
- Later uses Susanoo alongside Itachi against the Six Paths of Pain. Despite this, they only manage to escape Amegakure temporarily before being surrounded again; the stage of Shisui’s Susanoo in this battle is not specified 229.
Body Flicker and Combat Talent
Shisui’s exceptional combat talent earns him the reputation of Body Flicker Shisui. Qiu Shan acknowledges that he could not defeat Shisui even before Shisui awakened the Mangekyō 1 7.
- Remains alert to hidden threats while attempting to escape Root’s encirclement 35.
- Continues fighting and fleeing despite severe poison, eye pain, and approaching exhaustion 36 37.
- Remains combat-ready during the prolonged confrontation with Pain even when Itachi is nearly unable to stand 227.
- Qiu Shan repeatedly rates his talent above Obito’s and later recognizes him as the strongest Uchiha other than himself 131 211 593.
Fire Release
- Uses a Fire Dragon Technique to scatter Root’s initial encirclement and create an opening for escape 35.
Reconnaissance and Infiltration
- Scouts and patrols Whirlpool Island with Itachi, reporting their findings to Fugaku and eliminating threats before receiving a new assignment 52 93.
- Detects faint chakra in Amegakure’s rain with Itachi, allowing them to recognize Pain’s surveillance and proceed cautiously 242.
- Prepares speech and cover identities for the mission to Kirigakure, emphasizing the risk of exposure if they abandon and later resume the operation 270.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Tachi — Carried on his back and drawn when poisoned feet prevent his escape from Danzō. He also holds it while guarding the weakened Itachi during Pain’s encirclement 36 227.
- Antidotes — Routinely carried, but none counteracts the poison inflicted by Torune Aburame’s venomous insects 37.
- Sealed Izanagi safeguard — Qiu Shan secretly places Izanagi in one of Shisui’s Sharingan, set to revive him twelve hours after his heart stops. Its success depends on keeping the relevant eye out of Danzō’s hands; it is an external safeguard, not Shisui’s innate Mangekyō technique 28 42 43.
- Renewed Izanagi safeguard — Before the Amegakure mission, Qiu Shan places another safeguard in Shisui’s eyes, this time configured to restore him with an intact body five seconds after he is killed. Shisui detects it and questions the cost to Qiu Shan 99.
- Space mark — Provided by Qiu Shan as a means of contact and reinforcement. Shisui activates it repeatedly when he and Itachi are cornered by Pain, enabling Qiu Shan to locate them 105 227.
Relationships
- Qiu Shan Uchiha — Childhood friend and trusted partner. Shisui willingly lets him copy Kotoamatsukami and entrusts him with his body, eyes, and the clan’s future. Qiu Shan arranges his resurrection and subsequent departure from Konoha 2 4 17 28 43 44. Shisui later serves under him on intelligence missions, worries about the personal cost of his protective Izanagi, and calls him for help against Pain. Qiu Shan rescues and treats the pair, reassures them after their defeat, and privately acknowledges Shisui’s standing as the clan’s strongest fighter apart from himself 93 99 105 227 234 243 593.
- Itachi Uchiha — Close friend who regards Shisui as a beloved older brother. Shisui takes pride in his potential and urges him to seek advice, care for himself, and remember Sasuke. Grief over Shisui’s death awakens Itachi’s Mangekyō; after their reunion, they scout Whirlpool Island together 17 37 42 43 44. Shisui explains Qiu Shan’s efforts and purported foresight to Itachi, partners with him on intelligence missions, and protects him when Pain leaves him severely weakened. Itachi later moves into Shisui’s home on Whirlpool Island 92 95 105 227 245.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Longtime mentor and village leader whom Shisui initially trusts deeply. Qiu Shan’s warning undermines that trust, leading Shisui to alter Hiruzen’s attitude through Kotoamatsukami while maintaining outward respect 2 6 7.
- Danzō Shimura — Enemy who seeks control of Shisui and his Sharingan. Orders Root to attack after Shisui rejects its cursed seal; Shisui exposes his motives and concealed Sharingan before dying 35 36 38.
- Kagami Uchiha — Ancestor whose talent, bearing, and Will of Fire Shisui is said to have inherited 6 7 33.
- Fugaku Uchiha — Clan leader who coordinates with Shisui during the plan against Danzō. Shisui reports Root’s surveillance to him, prompting contact with Qiu Shan. Shisui and Itachi later report their Whirlpool Island patrols to Fugaku after the first relocation group arrives 29 33 34 52.
- Torune Aburame — Root operative whose microscopic venomous insects poison Shisui, ultimately causing his death before Izanagi restores him 36 37 38.
- Uchiha Ling — Clan Elder who arranges prospective marriage introductions for Shisui as part of the clan’s population-growth policy. Shisui is embarrassed and initially seeks further missions to avoid the meetings, but understands the Elder’s reasoning. Ling later selects the young clan members whom Shisui leads to Konoha’s Chūnin Exams 270 476.
- Pain / Nagato — Akatsuki opponent whose Six Paths corner Shisui and Itachi during their Amegakure investigation. The Paths’ shared vision, Rinnegan, and repeated resurrection counter their abilities; Shisui’s Kotoamatsukami fails to establish control 227 229 242 243.
- Haku — Young Ice Release survivor found by Shisui and Itachi in the Land of Water. Shisui reports his persecution with concern and asks whether Qiu Shan intends to take him into the clan 270.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Warning and Alliance
- Qiu Shan claims that a dōjutsu called “Rift of Time” has shown him Shisui’s death and the Uchiha’s destruction. The purported foresight is a bluff based on Qiu Shan’s knowledge of future events 2.
- Shisui believes the warning, reconsiders his trust in Konoha’s leadership, and agrees to cooperate 2 3.
- He freely activates his Mangekyō so Qiu Shan can copy Kotoamatsukami, enabling Qiu Shan’s first successful Mangekyō awakening 4.
Reconciliation Operation
- Shisui visits Hiruzen under the pretext of seeking advice about changes in his Sharingan and successfully casts Kotoamatsukami during a private examination 6 7.
- His attempt to reach Danzō fails because Danzō cannot be found at Root’s base. He withdraws rather than arouse suspicion 16.
- Qiu Shan meanwhile secures Elder Ling’s agreement to avoid provoking hostility toward Konoha for several years 15 16.
Baiting Danzō
- Shisui accepts a plan involving his genuine death to create political leverage for the Uchiha and potentially awaken Itachi’s Mangekyō 17.
- Qiu Shan prepares the delayed Izanagi safeguard. Shisui then selectively reveals his Mangekyō during difficult missions, allowing rumors to reach Danzō 28 29.
- After detecting Root surveillance, Shisui follows the plan and permits disguised operatives to take him under a forged Hokage order 33 34.
Root Attack and Death
- At Root’s base, Shisui offers service as a mediator but refuses Danzō’s demand that he accept a cursed seal 35.
- Root attacks him. Torune’s poison blocks his escape, forcing him to manifest skeletal Susanoo and flee the cave 36 37.
- Qiu Shan finds him near Konoha, but medical treatment cannot reverse the cellular destruction caused by the poison 37.
- Before assembled clan representatives and Hiruzen, Shisui accuses Danzō of trying to steal his Mangekyō and reveals Danzō’s implanted Sharingan. He dies shortly afterward 38.
- His death becomes grounds for negotiating the Uchiha’s relocation, while Itachi’s grief triggers a Mangekyō awakening 39 40 42 43.
Resurrection and Whirlpool Island
- While Itachi keeps vigil, Shisui’s corpse vanishes and a healthy Shisui appears through the sealed Izanagi 41 42.
- Shisui reunites with Qiu Shan and Itachi, learns that the relocation agreement succeeded, and thanks Itachi while apologizing for his suffering 43.
- With his survival kept secret, Shisui leaves with Itachi to scout Whirlpool Island ahead of the clan’s first relocation group. He agrees to watch over Itachi and limit the younger ninja’s Mangekyō use 44.
- Shisui and Itachi report their patrol findings to Fugaku when the first group arrives. They later finish exploring the island and eliminating its threats 52 92 93.
- During their time together, Shisui tells Itachi about Qiu Shan’s efforts to save the clan and resolve its conflict with Konoha 92.
Akatsuki Investigation and Mission Safeguards
- Qiu Shan assigns Shisui and Itachi to investigate Amegakure and Akatsuki after receiving information that Pain killed Hanzō and that the organization may seek the tailed beasts 93.
- With Qiu Shan’s permission, Shisui explains Copying Eye and the supposed future-seeing Space-Time Rift to Itachi. This helps establish the trust through which Itachi offers Qiu Shan his own ocular techniques 95.
- Both become concerned when Qiu Shan warns of Itachi’s future health problems, but accept his reassurance that he will seek a solution 95.
- Shisui detects the renewed Izanagi in his eyes and demands an explanation of its cost. Qiu Shan identifies it as a five-second resurrection safeguard 99.
- Before departure, Qiu Shan briefs the pair on Akatsuki members, particularly Hidan’s immortality and Kakuzu’s five hearts. After adding an Izanagi safeguard to Itachi as well, he transports both outside the village 104 105.
- While they are away, the clan informs them through the Summoning Technique that Qiu Shan has become clan leader 227.
Battle with the Six Paths of Pain
- Shisui and Itachi cautiously infiltrate Amegakure, recognizing the faint chakra in Pain’s Rain Tiger at Will Technique. The village’s hostility to outsiders and tight defenses prolong their investigation 242.
- They are eventually surrounded by the Six Paths of Pain and Konan. Repeated revivals through the Naraka Path wear them down despite their having defeated several Paths multiple times 227.
- Pain’s Rinnegan renders most of their genjutsu ineffective, while the six bodies’ shared vision makes retreat difficult. Even using Susanoo, they only escape Amegakure temporarily before being encircled again 229.
- Still able to fight, Shisui guards the nearly collapsing Itachi with his tachi and repeatedly activates Qiu Shan’s space mark. He reassures Itachi that help is coming 227.
- Qiu Shan responds to the emergency and protects the pair with Wood Release. His clone treats Shisui, whose principal lingering problem is ocular strain rather than severe bodily injury 227 234.
- During their report afterward, Shisui reveals that Kotoamatsukami only caused Pain to pause briefly and failed to control him. Qiu Shan explains the threat posed by the Rinnegan 242.
- Shisui and Itachi feel guilty about their defeat, but Qiu Shan reassures them that even Kage-level fighters would struggle against Pain. Shisui also learns Qiu Shan’s theory connecting the Sharingan’s evolution to the Rinnegan and questions him about its evidence 243.
- Qiu Shan explains that intelligence about a man calling himself Madara in Amegakure motivated their assignment. Afterward, he sends the pair to Whirlpool Island, where Itachi stays in Shisui’s home 243 245.
Land of Water Mission and Haku
- At Qiu Shan’s request, Shisui keeps watch for Haku and succeeds in finding him with Itachi. He reports how hatred of kekkei genkai users led Haku’s father and fellow villagers to attack the boy and his mother 270.
- Shisui expresses concern for Haku and supports Qiu Shan’s intention to assess him for recruitment and training as a clan retainer 270.
- He and Itachi decline an early return home, choosing to finish their mission to Kirigakure rather than risk exposing their cover 270.
- Qiu Shan warns Shisui that the Elder has selected prospective marriage partners for him. Shisui requests further missions to avoid the introductions, but is told the Elder intends to enforce a period of rest 270.
- Shisui subsequently explains to Itachi that he is embarrassed rather than opposed to marriage arrangements and understands their place in the clan’s effort to increase its numbers 270.
- During Qiu Shan’s confrontation with the Three-Tails, Shisui catches Itachi’s wrist to stop him from intervening. Itachi then withdraws and deactivates his Mangekyō 284.

- While watching the matches, he discusses Uchiha Jie’s early talent and skill in Fire Release with Qiu Shan 479.
- He notices Qiu Shan leaving during the tournament but remains silent, trusting the Wood Clone left in his place 481.
- During Itachi and Sasuke’s later duel, Tsunade questions why Shisui has remained out of sight despite his exceptional talent. Qiu Shan explains that he has been undertaking secret missions and privately acknowledges him as the strongest Uchiha apart from himself 593.
- Akatsuki intelligence still identifies Shisui as a Mangekyō wielder, although he has not appeared openly for a long time 603.
