Viserys did not deny it. He swallowed his last mouthful of bread, his voice much gentler than usual as he said, "I was thinking that the people we found tonight might have been deliberately left here as bait."
"Why do you say that?" At his words, much of Daenerys's drowsiness vanished.
She propped herself up a little in Viserys's arms. Her loose silver hair slipped from her shoulders, a few strands falling back onto his hand. Her violet eyes looked straight at him as she asked in confusion.
Viserys's fingers slid gently down Daenerys's neck and stopped at her collarbone before he slowly said, "These people don't look as though they stopped here because the Reach's fleet drove them into a corner."
Viserys did not leave it at that. His gaze passed beyond the cave mouth to the sea outside, tinged blue by moonlight and the faint glow of distant fires.
Wave after wave struck the reefs, breaking into fine spray that the wind carried into the cave. The air was thick with cold, salty damp.
He fell silent for a few moments before slowly explaining the possibilities he had gone over again and again in his mind.
"Besides, they left men to scout around these reefs."
His fingers drifted absently down along Daenerys's shoulder, his fingertips tracing a half circle before he continued, "But they've chosen such an open stretch of sea. Apart from the reefs, there's no cover here at all, and the water is shallow."
"As long as their leader isn't a complete fool, he would never linger here. He would keep heading south to find a more sheltered bay, or simply split the fleet into several groups and send them off in different directions. Then it wouldn't be so easy for us to find them all
