Background / History
Daenerys is born on Dragonstone during a colossal storm that wrecks both Stannis Baratheon’s approaching fleet and a Lannister flanking force. Queen Rhaella dies from blood loss after delivering her healthy daughter. Viserys takes Daenerys from their mother’s arms and resolves to protect her and give her a peaceful life. After Rhaella’s cremation, he orders the surviving household and more than two thousand followers to sail for Essos 19.
During the Valyrian Empire’s development, Viserys gives Daenerys three fossilized eggs from the Shadow Lands. King Ghidorah has judged them completely dead, but Viserys suspects Daenerys may provide the miracle needed to revive them. She names the eggs Vermax, Viserion, and Acmot, talks to them, and sleeps beside them. Their failure to hatch troubles her, especially as other dragons begin emerging, but her brother repeatedly encourages her to continue caring for them 70 72 74.
Qartheen assassins later attack Dragonwing Castle. One ignites supernatural black fire outside Daenerys’s bedroom, trapping her behind flames that water cannot extinguish. Viserys enters under magical protection and finds her unconscious but breathing, with a small cut on her arm and three newly hatched dragons beside her. Her maid has died in the fire. The hatchlings follow Daenerys as he carries her out, establishing their strong attachment to her 84 85.
Appearance
Daenerys has the silver hair and violet eyes associated with her Targaryen ancestry 19 181 292.
- Hair: Silver-white down at birth; later long silver hair, sometimes tied into a ponytail for riding 19 181 292.
- Eyes: Violet 19 172 292.
- Complexion: Pale 550.
- Riding clothes: Black-and-red dragonriding garb 181.
Personality
Daenerys is openly affectionate toward Viserys and deeply distressed by long separations from him. During one absence, she waits for him every afternoon and reproaches him when he returns almost a month later. Her attachment can become possessive: she squeezes into his embrace with Rhaenys to claim his attention and questions him after seeing Margaery leave wearing his clothes 120 172 181.
Her tenderness extends to her dragons. She treats the unhatched eggs as companions and later manages the dragons’ jealousy with reassurance and promises of attention. Their unruly enthusiasm often leaves her caught between irritation and laughter 70 119 296 505.
She wants an active role in restoring House Targaryen rather than permanent protection from danger. She argues that she cannot stay behind forever, takes up serious sword practice, and seeks opportunities to fight. Nevertheless, her first battle leaves her shaken by the deaths she has caused 136 178 183 293.
Daenerys remains compassionate even when her family favors ruthless political decisions. She mourns the three Lannister children while accepting Viserys’s justification for their deaths. Later, she argues against acting hastily against the unconscious Asha Greyjoy and is visibly disturbed by Lorne’s account of Ramsay Bolton hunting captive women 260 573 604.
Abilities & Skills
Dragon Bonding and Command
Daenerys maintains a close relationship with three dragons rather than a single mount. They form their own small group within the larger Targaryen dragon horde, led by Acmot 85 505.
- The hatchlings stay beside her during the bedroom fire and follow her rescue 85.
- She can calm disputes and direct their behavior through spoken commands 105 119.
- Their attachment resembles children competing for their mother’s attention 296.
- Viserys can also direct her dragons, including protecting her during outings and commanding their attacks 551 563.
- Although the eggs hatch beside her, the precise mechanism of their revival is not explained 70 85.
Dragonriding
Daenerys normally rides Acmot but occasionally chooses either of her other dragons 505.
- Receives early flight training through rides on Blackflame with Viserys 74.
- Travels across the Summer Sea and Narrow Sea with Arya, stopping when Acmot needs rest 258.
- Uses a saddle and secures its straps before flight 292 505.
- Her early participation in combat is restricted by her dragons’ youth and Viserys’s concern for her safety 136 331.
Possible Prophetic Dreams
Her frightening dream shows a black dragon breathing blood-red fire and two other dragon forms, one spreading ice-blue crystals. Viserys treats it as a potential dragon dream and a warning about Viserion’s future 78.
- The eggs still show no signs of life when he examines them afterward 78.
- The vision strengthens his belief that they will eventually hatch 78.
- No deliberate control over prophetic dreaming is documented.
Fire Resistance
Daenerys survives the supernatural fire surrounding her bedroom. Later, she explicitly says that she and Viserys can withstand real flames because they possess dragonlord blood 85 544.
- Her survival supports resistance to fire, but the rescue leaves her unconscious and with a small arm wound 85.
- The context does not establish unlimited protection against every form of heat or magic.
Swordsmanship
Daenerys trains with a Valyrian steel sword, practicing alongside Arya after Viserys leaves for Westeros 183.
- Her sword training is less strictly enforced because Viserys considers dragonriding the Targaryens’ principal source of strength 502.
- She keeps a hand near her sword while investigating Asha’s apparently deserted camp 571.
Administration and Political Judgment
Daenerys governs King’s Landing during Viserys’s northern absence and later reports the preceding month’s events at dinner 430 449.
- Rhaenys warns her against flattering southern nobles, rash commitments, and underestimating Asha’s naval strength 526.
- At Asha’s camp, she considers underwater escape routes and questions whether the Ironborn’s abandonment of their leader was deliberate 571.
- She argues that Asha may have been coerced and that killing her without questioning her could serve an enemy’s scheme 573.
Dragons
| Dragon | Description | Relationship with Daenerys |
|---|---|---|

| Vermax | One of the three dragons hatched from her fossilized eggs 70 85. | Protects her during battle, competes for her affection, and occasionally carries her 292 296 505. |
| Viserion | White-gold or platinum-colored dragon with cream-colored head scales; the slenderest of the three 296 505. | Affectionate and eager for her attention. She sometimes rides him instead of Acmot 296 505. |

- Asha Greyjoy — Enemy captive whose circumstances Daenerys questions; she urges caution rather than assuming Asha willingly led the surviving Ironborn 571 573.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Joining the Restoration Campaign
- Seeking permission: Daenerys argues that Acmot can carry her and that she wants to reclaim the Iron Throne alongside Viserys 178.
- Delayed at Lys: Impatient with resupply and repairs, she protests being told the fleet needs at least three more days before departure 257.
- Flight to King’s Landing: Travels with Arya over the Summer Sea and Narrow Sea, carrying provisions and resting when Acmot tires 258.
- Royal hard-heartedness: Her sadness over the Lannister children’s deaths contrasts with Viserys and Rhaenys’s political reasoning. Viserys also permits her to attend an execution while remaining beside him 260 262.
First Battle at Harrenhal
- Rides Acmot into her first battle and orders an attack on a Scorpion, with Vermax and Viserion guarding her 292.
- Her initial excitement gives way to distress at causing death. Viserys comforts her after landing, and Rhaenys offers encouragement 293.
Responsibility in the Red Keep
- Helps Roslin adjust to court by teaching her about dragons 331.
- Remains behind when Viserys attacks the Iron Islands because he considers the campaign too dangerous for her limited experience 331.
- Governs King’s Landing during his northern absence and reports the month’s developments when the family reunites 430 449.
The Reach and the Remaining Ironborn
- Travels to Highgarden with Viserys, asking about local history and insisting she can endure the journey despite his protective caution 529.
- Receives a formal welcome from Margaery and enjoys the Reach’s flowers, contrasting its pleasant air with Valyria’s sulfur and King’s Landing’s odors 535 540 551.
- Watches her dragons destroy an Ironborn cave encampment with greater composure than in her first battle 563.
- Helps investigate Asha’s abandonment and challenges the assumption that the unconscious captive is necessarily responsible for the remaining Ironborn’s actions 571 573.
Witness to Bolton Cruelty
- Hears Lorne describe Ramsay’s hunts of captive women, grips Viserys’s arm, and quietly asks who the victims were 604.
- The provided account ends before any decision on Lorne’s appeal or Ramsay’s actions is documented 604.
Notable Quotes
“I can't stay behind forever. I want to reclaim the Iron Throne with you.” 178
“I never said I disagreed. Of course I know you're right. I was just feeling sad about it for a moment.” 260
“But she isn't resisting now, and she poses no threat to us. We don't even know whether she was the one leading those Ironborn.” 573
Trivia
- Viserys describes the newborn Daenerys as the last pure-blooded Targaryen, distinguishing her from his own transmigrated identity and the other surviving descendants 19.
- Her three dragons remain a distinct group even within the much larger restored Targaryen dragon horde 505.
- Viserys fears that inherited Targaryen madness could eventually awaken in her and considers researching Valyrian blood magic. This is his concern, not a documented episode of madness by Daenerys 529.
