When he rode King Ghidorah back to Dragonwing Castle, his body was still utterly exhausted, but he felt a sense of relief.
While he had been away from the castle, Ser Jon, Ser William, and the others had kept all of Valyria's affairs in good order. Nor did he need to worry about Arthur. The empire's "peaceful development" advanced steadily, with its military strength, wealth, and resources all growing.
He went to see Daenerys again.
As expected, the little girl treasured the three fossilized dragon eggs, keeping them with her even when she ate and slept. Though the eggs still showed no signs of life, Daenerys's behavior gave Viserys hope. Perhaps, beside Dany, the "Mother of Dragons," an unexpected miracle might occur even without the sacrifice from the original story.
The moment Rhaenys saw Viserys return, she ran over. Concern filled her violet eyes at the sight of his haggard face. Taking his hand, she said, "Brother, you look thinner. Is it because things aren't going well with the dragon eggs?"
Viserys ruffled her black hair and smiled. "No, things are going quite well with the eggs. They just need a little more time. My promise to let you choose first still stands. When they finally hatch, I'll come get you."
Rhaenys gave him a gentle hug before her smile returned. Then she eagerly told Viserys about the riding and swordsmanship lessons she had begun during his absence in preparation for becoming a dragonrider.
Viserys also spent time with Ashara. The tenderness of their reunion after a long separation briefly lifted the burden from his heart.
After resting for several days, Viserys felt fully restored, both physically and mentally.
He did not return to the volcano immediately. Instead, he began consulting the ancient books collected from various places and kept
