Background / History
Designation as heir
Following Prince Baelon’s death in infancy and Daemon’s mockery of him as the “heir for a day,” Viserys announced his intention to make Rhaenyra Princess of Dragonstone and establish her as his heir. She had not yet been formally invested at that point. Daemon resented being displaced from the succession 1.
Alicent’s delivery of a son in 107 AC created a new challenge to Rhaenyra’s position. Otto Hightower had previously supported her over Daemon, but now saw his grandson Aegon as an opportunity to advance male succession. Rhaenyra arranged for a dragon egg to be placed in Aegon’s cradle at Viserys’s request, rather than as the political maneuver Otto suspected 1.
Rhaenyra’s former friendship with Alicent became strained after Alicent married her father. Nevertheless, she regularly visited Aegon and developed genuine affection for him despite the threat his birth posed to her inheritance 4 6.
The Kingswood hunt
At Aegon’s name-day celebration, Rhaenyra faced pointed questions about her claim and Daemon’s loyalty. She maintained her composure during Lady Kyra’s provocations and brought the tea gathering to an end after Sunfyre frightened its guests 8.
Jason Lannister’s courtship and Viserys’s admission that her marriage was a political responsibility intensified her anger. Otto then presented the sighting of a White Hart as a possible omen favoring Aegon’s kingship. Rhaenyra left camp before dawn, taking Aegon with her after he caught her preparing to depart; Sunfyre followed, and Criston Cole secretly escorted them 9 10.
In the woods, Rhaenyra spoke about missing her mother, fearing the loss of her inheritance, and resenting political marriage. When Aegon jokingly offered to kill Jason, she rejected arbitrary killing as tyrannical conduct unfit for a ruler 14.
A huge wounded boar later attacked their camp. After Cole was knocked aside and Sunfyre intervened, Rhaenyra secured Aegon on a rock and killed the beast with her dagger. The attack became an outlet for her suppressed grief and anger, followed by an emotional collapse in Aegon’s arms 15.
At dawn, she witnessed the White Hart bow to Aegon and helped him mount it. Her pride was mixed with unease about the encounter’s implications. Harrold Westerling subsequently escorted the siblings back to the royal camp 16 17.
Winning control over her marriage
Two years later, rumors of another proposed match led Rhaenyra to confront the Small Council, entering with Aegon after Sunfyre broke open its door. She challenged Viserys’s repeated promises not to pressure her into marriage and pointed out that he had rejected a political marriage to Laena Velaryon in favor of Alicent 20 21.
Viserys conceded that she could choose whom and when to marry, while maintaining that marriage and heirs remained her responsibility. He also admitted that Aegon’s birth and the White Hart had once made him reconsider the succession, but swore that Rhaenyra would remain his heir. His concessions did not erase her hurt 21.
Marriage tour and refuge in the Vale
Rhaenyra negotiated permission to travel with Aegon and a selected entourage. At Storm’s End, she reunited with Laena but rejected the proposed suitors, including Raymond Baratheon after Borros crudely emphasized his ability to father a strong son. No Stormlands candidate interested her 22 24 26 30.
The tour continued through the Reach, Westerlands, and Riverlands. Rhaenyra rejected both Jason and Tyland Lannister at Casterly Rock and left Oldtown quickly, preventing Otto from speaking privately with Aegon. At Riverrun, rivalry over courting her contributed to a fight between Bracken and Blackwood youths 32 49.
After a stay on Dragonstone, she eventually accepted Viserys’s offer to visit the Vale alone. At the Eyrie, Jeyne Arryn and Jeyne Redfort offered companionship, recreation, and instruction free from the scrutiny of court. Rhaenyra repeatedly delayed her return and neglected to mention the confined Aegon in her letters, leaving him hurt and resentful 37 46 52 58.
Jeyne finally persuaded her to return for Viserys and Alicent’s fifth wedding-anniversary celebration. Rhaenyra arrived happier and more relaxed, but seeing Aegon holding Alicent’s hand made her feel displaced 58 59.
Factional division and Daemon’s betrayal
At the anniversary celebration, nobles wearing green publicly aligned themselves with Alicent, while a larger group in black supported Rhaenyra. Although Rhaenyra believed Alicent’s explanation that Otto had engineered the display, the division damaged their renewed friendship 69 72.
Aegon’s intervention prevented the confrontation from developing as expected, but also drew attention away from Rhaenyra. She understood that he meant to protect her, yet resented his making decisions on her behalf and withdrew from him emotionally 71 72.
Daemon then led Rhaenyra and Aegon through a secret passage into Flea Bottom and to an establishment associated with Mysaria. The outing ended disastrously. Rhaenyra later recalled Daemon’s failure to protect her and her escape through a window, where guards acting on Aegon’s arrangements caught her safely 72 81.
The experience shattered much of her idealized view of Daemon. She came to see him, ambitious nobles, and even Viserys as placing their goals ahead of her well-being. Aegon’s reassurance restored her sense of safety, though she remained aware that he withheld information from her 78 81.
Betrothal and public service
When questioned about the outing, Rhaenyra acknowledged leaving the Red Keep but claimed they had watched a play. She reframed reports about the disreputable establishment as slander against the royal heir and urged an investigation. She separately explained that Aegon had arranged the fire that enabled her safe return 92 93.
Rhaenyra and Aegon had already agreed privately to seek a betrothal. Viserys independently proposed the same match, recognizing her attachment to Aegon. Four years later, their established betrothal and intended joint rule had reduced—without eliminating—the conflict between the Greens and Blacks 93 102.
During those years, the pair arbitrated Blackwood–Bracken boundary disputes, mediated disagreements among the Vale’s mountain lords, and inspected towns in the Dornish Marches. Their work earned public respect and comparisons to Jaehaerys and Alysanne 102.
Driftmark confrontation and later responsibilities
At eighteen, Rhaenyra accompanied the royal family to Driftmark, carrying Helaena on Syrax. Laenor’s dangerously close pass on Seasmoke angered her, and she rejected his explanation that the dragon had merely acted territorially. Before she could escalate the confrontation with Dreamfyre’s apparent support, Daemon intervened on Caraxes 102 106 107.
Aegon subsequently defeated Laenor and injured Seasmoke. Rhaenys condemned the provocation of Rhaenyra and persuaded Aegon to stop. His return restored Rhaenyra’s confidence; she regarded him as her betrothed returning to her, rather than only as her younger brother 111.
Later, Rhaenyra helped manage people freed during Daemon and Corlys’s voyage. Driftmark’s limited capacity required arrangements for children to enter the Faith’s care in King’s Landing and for some skilled workers to settle in Crackclaw Point. She then returned to King’s Landing with Aegon by dragon 188.
Appearance
Rhaenyra has long silver-gold hair, large violet eyes, and a slender build. By eighteen, her features combine composure with a stubborn, determined expression 7 102.
- House colors: Frequently wears Targaryen black and red in ceremonial gowns and riding clothes 4 102 120.
- Hair: Wears intricate braids, later favoring a riding braid modeled after Queen Visenya’s style 4 102.
- Formal styling: Laena helps arrange her braids into an elegant bun for the Driftmark dinner 120.
Personality
Rhaenyra fiercely resists being treated as a marriage prize or instrument of alliance. Her objections concern not only the proposed husbands but also the loss of choice and the expectation that she should produce heirs while still a child. She can expose hypocrisy directly, most notably when confronting Viserys over the freedom he exercised in his own marriage 9 21 26.
Her public composure conceals loneliness, grief for Aemma, and fear that her father’s promises will fail. Anger can break through that restraint with startling force, as in the boar encounter and her interruption of the Small Council. The narration calls this her “sleeping dragon’s wrath” 14 15 20.
She is affectionate and protective, but also possessive. Aegon’s growing independence unsettles her even when his actions help her, and she becomes jealous of his closeness to Alicent and Laena. Her extended stay in the Vale also shows that her own desire for freedom can make her inattentive to his needs 52 59 72 134.
With experience, Rhaenyra becomes more politically assured. Her handling of the Street of Silk accusations demonstrates a willingness to shape a defensible public account, while her later mediation work shows her accepting practical responsibilities as heir 92 102.
