Beerus's strike missed. He tilted his head, dodging Vegeta's attack from behind, then reflexively drove an elbow back at him.
Vegeta vanished, leaving Beerus's elbow striking empty air. Beerus followed with a heavy punch forward, just as Vegeta appeared in front of him.
Vegeta reached out and caught Beerus's fist. Beerus swung his other hand at him, only for Vegeta to catch that one too.
Then the two began a contest of strength.

As they roared, the purple flames and silver flames surrounding them clashed violently. Nearby asteroids and meteoroids shattered under the shock waves, and space itself began to quake.
Suddenly, Vegeta drove a knee straight into Beerus's chin.
Beerus shouted, "Vegeta, have you no honor? You actually ambushed an elder who's hundreds of millions of years old!"
Vegeta laughed. "Lord Beerus, it looks like you haven't quite mastered Ultra Instinct. That strike wasn't even particularly fast. You should have been able to dodge it easily."
Beerus said, "Wasn't I locked in a contest of strength with you? When I'm concentrating that hard, my brain takes control of my body, so Ultra Instinct naturally stops working."
"Oh, I see," Vegeta said, letting go.
Puzzled, Beerus asked, "What, Vegeta? You don't want to keep testing your strength against mine?"
