Background / History
Beerus once imprisoned Old Kai for seventy-five million years, leaving the Kai with a lasting grudge. He also admits that he ordered Frieza to destroy Planet Vegeta. Vegeta accepts the confession without seeking revenge, arguing that the strong rule and that his father’s fate was inevitable 128 129.
In Son Goku’s own timeline, Beerus sleeps for thirty-nine years. On awakening, he learns from Whis that Frieza is dead, Old Kai has been released, and Son Goku has been identified as a potential successor. Connecting Goku with his dream of a Super Saiyan God, Beerus decides to visit Earth 126.
Beerus has considerable innate talent but initially does little to develop it. Whis attributes his stagnation to his appetite, laziness, and aversion to training rather than a lack of potential 103 210.
Appearance
- Feline features: A catlike face, clawed hands, and a tail used in combat 86 129 215.
- Normal coloration and clothing: Described as a purple figure wearing God of Destruction attire 133.
- God of Destruction Form: Purple flames and pupils, deepening to dark purple at full power 85 86 133.
- Ultra Instinct: Silver flames and silver pupils 88 133.
- Upgraded destruction form: Turns black from head to toe, including his aura 209.
- Dual Ultra Beerus: Silver flames occupy the inner region of his aura, surrounded by a distinct outer layer of black flames 213.
Personality
Beerus is proud of his divine standing and frequently boasts that he is the strongest God of Destruction. He enjoys taunting opponents and conceals his surprise when mortals prove stronger than expected. Public defeat particularly wounds his pride: after losing to Broly, Champa’s mockery nearly provokes him into attacking his brother 113 132 136.
Food and sleep regularly take priority over work. He quickly returns to eating after an intensive training period and considers another twenty or thirty years of training too tedious. Nevertheless, the prospect of being overtaken repeatedly drives him back to serious practice 107 138 203.
His pride does not prevent him from recognizing mortal achievement. He praises Son Gohin’s unconventional fighting philosophy and rejects the other Gods’ contempt for mortals, reminding them that they themselves began as mortals 112 129.
Beerus is notably deferential toward Zeno and the Grand Priest. He bows immediately before Zeno, becomes anxious when questioned about neglected duties, and tries to secure goodwill by offering food 93 107 149.
Abilities & Skills
God of Destruction Technique
Beerus teaches that the technique requires clearing away distractions and emotions, then focusing entirely on destruction 138.
- Produces destruction spheres, large barrages, and destructive energy attacks 85 130 132.
- Uses the possibility of stray attacks reaching Earth to force opponents to intercept rather than dodge 85 130.
- Distinguishes ordinary destruction energy from divine destruction authority, which draws on the much stronger law of destruction 138.
- Uses the law directly against the visiting Son Goku, but fails to erase him 86.
- Explains that the technique’s ultimate level becomes Zeno’s Erasure; this is an explanation of its potential, not evidence that Beerus has mastered Erasure 138.
Annihilation Energy and Absorption
Clearing the Tower’s seventh layer upgrades Beerus’s destruction power into black annihilation energy 209 213.
- Absorbs three minutes of Son Goku No. 1’s energy attacks without injury, causing his black flames to expand 210.
- Claims unlimited absorption; Goku reasons that a limit exists but lies beyond what he can supply 210.
- Expands his black aura to make Gogeta’s incoming energy blasts vanish after their speed begins overwhelming his evasion 214.
Ultra Instinct
Ultra Instinct allows Beerus’s body to evade and counterattack automatically, without conscious deliberation 88 116.
- The perfected second level lets his visited-timeline counterpart evade the other Gods while keeping his eyes closed and hands behind his back 118.
- The third level, “returning to the essence,” renders Son Goku No. 1 unable to land a close-range hit 210.
- It is not an absolute defense: Broly’s superior speed and power overcome the earlier, incomplete version 136.
Dual Ultra Beerus
Beerus combines the Angel technique Ultra Instinct with the God of Destruction technique Ultra Ego. Whis and Vados regard the fusion of these two divine techniques as unprecedented 213.
- Maintains autonomous dodging and counterattacking alongside annihilating destruction power 213.
- Keeps pace with Super Saiyan 6 Gogeta in a battle too fast for most spectators to follow 213.
- Impresses the Grand Priest, who initially estimates that this strength likely has no equal beneath Zeno’s Guards 213.
Martial Arts and Tactical Combat
- Uses afterimages, rapid feints, kicks, body blows, and knockout strikes 117 130 212.
- Employs his tail to restrain or strike opponents, though Gohin escapes by biting it 129 212.
- Recognizes feigned injuries and counters phantom-image traps 85 130 215.
- Adjusts the force of his attacks to reduce spatial disturbance and collateral damage 129 212.
Equipment / Items
- God of Destruction attire — His standard divine clothing, repeatedly torn and scorched during difficult spars 133 215.
- Senzu Beans — Supplied by Korin to restore his injuries and stamina between matches. Beerus is astonished by their effects, but learns that they are scarce and difficult to grow 132 135 136.
Relationships
- Whis — Attendant, training partner, and candid critic. Whis discovers Goku as a candidate, guides Beerus’s training, and repeatedly teases him about laziness 103 127 138 210.
- Son Goku — Challenger, successor candidate, and catalyst for Beerus’s improvement. Beerus teaches him the God of Destruction Technique; Goku eventually becomes Great God of Destruction and later entrusts that position to Beerus before traveling 138 193 229.
- Champa — Brother and persistent rival. They trade insults and compete over fighters, but Beerus agrees to help him confront the threat of universal erasure 117 128 137 150.
- Vegeta — Respected opponent and Champa’s candidate. Their serious match ends in a draw after Goku intervenes 128 133 134.
- Broly — Supreme Kai candidate whose decisive victory exposes Beerus’s shortcomings. Beerus later surpasses his earlier limits through renewed training 136 210 216.
- Son Gohin — Initially a sparring opponent; later accepts the vacant God of Destruction candidate position and trains under Beerus 129 132 203.
- Son Goshin — Considered as a successor candidate, but declines because his peaceful nature would make planetary destruction difficult 193 203.
- Old Kai — Former prisoner and vocal critic. Beerus threatens to seal him away again after catching him laughing at his difficulties 129 132.
- Frieza — Carried out Beerus’s order to destroy Planet Vegeta. Beerus later refuses to support his attempt to turn him against Goku 128 146.
- Zeno and the Grand Priest — Superior authorities whom Beerus fears offending. They oversee his duties and the tournament arrangements 107 149 150.
- Quitela and Belmod — Rival Gods who challenge his boasts and try unsuccessfully to enlist him against Goku 112 113.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Testing the Visiting Son Goku
The Beerus of the initially visited timeline challenges Son Goku after learning that he defeated Champa. Their fight escalates from destruction-energy attacks to full-power transformations and a law-of-destruction attack that Goku survives 84 85 86.
After two hours, Goku reveals unlimited stamina and superior Ultra Instinct mastery. Beerus nevertheless challenges his claim of a one-strike victory, only to be knocked unconscious by Super Saiyan 6. Whis revives him, and Goku helps him save face by framing the defeat as a loss to Angel-level strength 87 88.
Beerus subsequently perfects his second-level Ultra Instinct. In the God of Destruction battle, he survives a coordinated barrage and defeats all eleven rival Gods. The Grand Priest grants Beerus himself exemption from punishment if his universe loses the Tournament of Power; the mortals still face the universe’s survival stakes 107 115 117 118.
Awakening and Earth’s Challenges
In Son Goku’s own timeline, Beerus’s awakening leads to a sequence of spars at Bulma’s birthday gathering. His initial confidence gives way to recognition that several mortals can challenge or surpass him 126 127 128.
| Opponent | Outcome | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Son Gohin | Beerus wins after Gohin surrenders 129 130 131 132 | Full destruction-form power establishes the remaining gap after Gohin’s strong opening performance. |
| Vegeta | Draw 133 134 | Vegeta’s destruction form matches Beerus’s partial Ultra Instinct; Goku stops their beam clash. |
| Son Goku | Beerus declines to fight 134 | Seeing Super Saiyan 6 stop both beams convinces him that the match would be one-sided. |
| Broly | Beerus concedes 135 136 | Super Saiyan 5 Broly overwhelms his Ultra Instinct through speed and raw strength. |
These encounters motivate Beerus to resume training with Whis and teach Goku destruction techniques through the God of Destruction Tower 137 138.
Tournament Planning and Succession
When Zeno announces plans to erase eight universes, Beerus proposes a ten-fighter battle royal as a way for the endangered universes to compete for survival. He also honors his agreement that Vegeta will represent Universe 6 149 150.
Goku’s promotion to Great God of Destruction leaves Beerus needing a new candidate. Broly declines because he values his freedom, and Goshin declines on moral grounds. Son Gohin accepts and subsequently clears six Tower layers before failing the seventh 193 203.
Resurgence and Divine Promotion
Beerus secretly develops annihilation energy and third-level Ultra Instinct, surprising even Whis. Against Gogeta, he reveals Dual Ultra Beerus; against Vegito, he withstands a dangerous close-range Kamehameha with only minor injuries after rapidly raising his power 209 210 213 215.
When Goku returns from seclusion, Beerus boasts that only Goku stands above him among those present, an assessment Whis, Vados, and Broly confirm. He nevertheless declines Goku’s proposed match 216.
Beerus later serves as acting Great God of Destruction. Whis attributes his Guards-level strength to turning humiliation into motivation, while Goku explains that he handed over the position before departing on his timeline travels 228 229.
