Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Hatake swordsmanship training resumed 22 Retrieves his father’s swordsmanship records after learning that stronger Sharingan abilities exist and worrying that his transplanted eye may become a liability.
Swordsmanship incorporated into combat preparation 39 87 Practices with a ninja blade and begins moving away from habitual reliance on Chidori. Later considers using sword techniques as his primary approach, with Lightning Blade in support.
Existing Mangekyō Sharingan recognized 248 Learns that Obito’s gifted eye is already a Mangekyō Sharingan. This is a discovery, not a new awakening; he cannot yet use Kamui and expects its chakra cost to incapacitate him.

Background / History

Kakashi witnessed his father’s suicide as a child. Joining a team helped him recover, but further losses followed: Rin died on his attack under circumstances beyond his control, and his teacher and his teacher’s wife later died during the Nine-Tails incident. Luo Mang’s Diary presents these repeated bereavements as the background to Kakashi’s attachment to his comrades 31.

His teammate Obito Uchiha gave him a Sharingan after being buried during a mission. Kakashi believed Obito had died and continued visiting his grave. Much later, the Diary reveals that Madara saved Obito and that he survived to become the Masked Man 248.

The recorded confrontation with Obito clarifies Rin’s death: she had been made a jinchūriki and deliberately threw herself onto Kakashi’s attack to avoid endangering Konoha. Kakashi also learns that Obito released the Nine-Tails, causing the deaths of his teacher and his teacher’s wife 250 251.

Appearance

  • Mask: Covers the lower part of his face 12 128.
  • Covered left eye: Usually hides his transplanted Sharingan beneath his forehead protector, lifting it when preparing to fight 38 79.
  • Scarred eye: The scar around his Sharingan is visible in the Kamui Dimension video 250.
  • “Dead-fish eyes”: Luo Mang teases his normally listless-looking eyes in the Diary 7.

Personality

Kakashi treats loyalty to comrades as a defining qualification for a ninja. His team’s real entrance test is not whether they obey his prohibition against sharing food, but whether they refuse to abandon Sakura. Their solidarity brings back memories of his lost companions 44.

His relaxed manner conceals considerable concern about his students and Konoha’s future. He deliberately maintains a listless appearance around Luo Mang to hide how seriously he takes the Diary, while privately recording threats and reconsidering his own weaknesses. He is willing to acknowledge that his teaching needs improvement, particularly when Sasuke falls behind in taijutsu 19 43 261.

His protectiveness does not prevent harsh or pragmatic decisions. He uses bandit-extermination missions to introduce his students to killing, considers Haku useful as a prisoner or bargaining asset, and later sets a hut on fire to force the team out of an overly cautious assassination strategy and into direct combat 55 99 260.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Genjutsu

Kakashi’s transplanted Sharingan comes from Obito rather than an inherited Hatake bloodline 31 248.

  • Observes enemy movements and searches for openings during combat 7.
  • Copies techniques, including a water clone in the recorded Zabuza battle 38.
  • Uses Sharingan genjutsu to put the captive Haku to sleep 101.
  • Has sufficient mental strength that the young Sasuke’s genjutsu poses little threat; he warns that he could reflect it back 43.
  • Suffers substantial chakra drain from the eye and increasingly tries to conserve it rather than activate it reflexively 38 80 111.

Mangekyō Sharingan and Kamui

The Diary’s account of Obito’s survival leads Kakashi to recognize that his own eye is already a Mangekyō Sharingan 248.

  • Knows Kamui’s name but cannot yet use it in the main timeline at that point 248.
  • Suspects his eye may have an offensive application complementary to Obito’s defensive intangibility; this remains a hypothesis 248.
  • Deduces from recorded battles that Obito transfers body parts into another dimension, cannot attack while intangible, and has a five-minute limit on continuous full-body intangibility 248.
  • Appears with an active Mangekyō Sharingan in the future battle video set inside the Kamui Dimension 250.

Lightning Release: Chidori / Lightning Blade

Lightning is Kakashi’s strongest element. He created Chidori and recognizes that Sharingan-assisted perception addresses a flaw in its use 87.

  • Uses it as a concentrated close-range lightning attack 7 32.
  • Teaches the technique to Luo Mang and Sasuke, both of whom have lightning affinity 87 128.
  • Encourages Luo Mang to consider a ranged adaptation suited to his combat preferences 128.
  • Emphasizes chakra limits and physical conditioning, warning his students against repeated use that their bodies cannot withstand 129.

Water Release

  • Water Prison Technique: Captures Zabuza in the main timeline after anticipating his ambush and countering with a clone 80.
  • Water Dragon Bullet Technique: Uses it during the bridge confrontation, though Zabuza escapes before it connects 97.
  • Great Waterfall Technique: Defeats Zabuza with it in the Diary’s recorded version of their battle 39.

Taijutsu, Weapons, and Basic Techniques

  • Handles several students simultaneously during the bell test, including countering Sasuke’s taijutsu with one hand while reading 43.
  • Uses sound to evade incoming weapons and performs a rapid Substitution Technique against Sasuke’s fireball 42.
  • Uses shadow clones for deception, reconnaissance, and instruction 7 109.
  • Kills Luo Mang’s remaining Root attacker with a kunai 30.
  • Gains the upper hand in close combat against Obito in the recorded Kamui Dimension battle, although both are wounded in their final exchange 251.

Sealing, Summoning, and Tactical Analysis

  • Uses the Evil Sealing Method on Sasuke’s Curse Mark in a Diary video 32.
  • Summons assistance during the recorded Pain battle; Pakkun later reports Zabuza’s escape and supplies rope for restraining Haku 8 97 98.
  • Identifies the Pain bodies’ shared vision and studies the Deva Path’s abilities through the invasion footage 7 8.
  • Connects Orochimaru’s interest in Sasuke and Otogakure to the possible Konoha Crush plot 32.
  • Posts an underground-market request for information about people wearing black-and-red cloaks, drawing the Akatsuki’s attention 78.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Copy of Luo Mang’s Diary — Appears on his desk without warning. Provides entries and recorded scenes that he uses to investigate future threats; its secrecy restrictions prevent open discussion 3 6 129.
  • Notebook — Holds deductions about Pain, the Masked Man, and other information extracted from the Diary’s videos 248.
  • Hatake swordsmanship records — His father’s notes, retrieved as a resource for rebuilding his own fighting style 22 39.
  • Ninja blade and kunai — Used for swordsmanship practice, combat, and training interventions 30 39 259.
  • Chakra paper — Used to identify his students’ elemental affinities 87 88.
  • Rin’s medical-ninjutsu notes — Basic material covering hemostasis, suturing, bone-setting, and poison treatment, supplied for Sakura’s training 97.
  • Icha Icha Paradise / Make-Out Paradise — Reads it at home and during the bell test. Luo Mang’s shuriken pierce the book when Kakashi uses it to block an attack 3 42 43.

Relationships

  • Luo Mang — Student and prospective apprentice. Kakashi seeks him out, saves him from Root, and brings him onto Team Seven to develop his combat experience. He also wants Luo Mang’s prophetic information to remain available to Konoha 6 19 30 40 119.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — Student whose future conduct troubles him. Kakashi seeks closer mentorship after seeing Sasuke attack Karin in a video, teaches him Chidori, and cautions him against rushing to match his future strength 23 117 129.
  • Naruto Uzumaki — Student and son of Kakashi’s teacher. Kakashi recognizes that the Nine-Tails interferes with Naruto’s chakra control and later accepts him as the prophesied Savior after witnessing his future power 88 328.
  • Sakura Haruno — Student. Kakashi identifies her water and earth affinities, provides medical-training material, and advises her not to let romance eclipse her responsibilities 88 97 98.
  • Obito Uchiha — Former teammate and donor of his Sharingan. Learning that Obito survived and became the Masked Man leaves Kakashi torn between relief, disbelief, and a desire to confront him 248 251.
  • Rin Nohara — Deceased teammate whose death remains central to Kakashi’s guilt. Her medical notes become part of Sakura’s instruction 97 250.
  • Minato Namikaze — Teacher and Fourth Hokage. Kakashi considers passing Minato’s Rasengan on to Naruto; memories of his teacher help his recorded future self reject Obito’s dream world 87 250.
  • Might Guy — Friend and longtime rival. Guy takes an interest in Kakashi’s decision to recruit Luo Mang and recommend him for the Chunin Exams as a one-man team 140 251.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Hokage to whom Kakashi reports. The Diary prompts Kakashi to reassess Hiruzen’s leadership, though he continues working through him to support Luo Mang and prepare the village 9 10 19.
  • Tsunade — Later Hokage. Kakashi questions her sudden removal of Luo Mang from the office and subsequently pledges support for her village-defense plans 119 285.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Receiving the Diary and Investigating Luo Mang

  • Discovers the Diary after initially overlooking it while reading Make-Out Paradise. Its knowledge of Naruto’s concealed identity immediately alarms him 3.
  • Obtains Luo Mang’s name and address from Iruka after learning that the boy has dropped out of the Academy 6.
  • Watches the predicted Pain invasion and turns the warning of his own death into an effort to identify enemy abilities and prepare Konoha 7 8.
  • Follows Luo Mang after reading about a suspicious assignment, intervening when Root assassins attack him 28 30.
  • Luo Mang then explicitly names Kakashi as his guessed Diary recipient, eventually confirming his suspicion 31 40.

Establishing the New Team Seven

  • Secures an early meeting with Sasuke and proposes a sparring match, intending to provide closer guidance than his recorded future self 23.
  • Accepts Luo Mang as the team’s additional member 40.
  • Passes the team when Naruto, Sasuke, and Luo Mang share food with the restrained Sakura despite his apparent prohibition 44.
  • Accelerates practical training through bandit-extermination missions rather than allowing the students to remain sheltered from lethal combat 55.

Land of Waves

  • Uses foreknowledge to reverse the recorded Zabuza encounter: instead of being trapped in a Water Prison, he captures Zabuza himself 80.
  • Recognizes Haku’s staged execution but allows the rescue, concealing his knowledge and conserving his Sharingan 80.
  • Oversees tree-climbing, affinity testing, water-walking, and early medical training during the bridge assignment 87 88 97 109.
  • Captures Haku after Zabuza abandons the bridge battle, treating him as a source of information and possible bargaining leverage 97 98 99.
  • Holds off most of Gato’s hired missing-nin while his students face the remaining attackers. Their injuries renew his concern that their progress is still insufficient for future dangers 108.
  • Returns to Konoha and reports that the supposedly C-rank mission actually involved danger between B- and A-rank 117 118.

Chunin Exam Preparation and Later Instruction

  • Separates training sessions to give Luo Mang and Sasuke focused Lightning Blade instruction 128 129.
  • Continues leading missions while Naruto trains under Jiraiya and Sakura under Tsunade 131.
  • Judges the original three students ready for the Chunin Exams and also recommends Luo Mang’s unusual solo entry 135 140.
  • Later disrupts a stealth-based bandit operation because it was intended as a taijutsu exercise. The resulting fight exposes Sasuke’s imbalance between Sharingan development and physical combat 259 260 261.

Obito’s Identity and the Threat of War

  • Learns that Obito is alive and will initiate the Fourth Shinobi World War, then reexamines the origin and capabilities of his own eye 248.
  • Watches the Kamui Dimension confrontation, which confirms Obito’s identity and reveals his role in the Nine-Tails incident 250 251.
  • The recorded Kakashi rejects Obito’s comforting genjutsu through memories of his teacher and students, then apparently wins their mutually wounding duel 250 251.
  • In the main timeline, supports Tsunade’s preparations concerning Kumogakure and later revises his expectations of Naruto after seeing him battle Toneri 285 328.

Trivia

  • Luo Mang uses “several Kakashis” as a comparison for Naruto’s chakra reserves. Kakashi resents it, attributing his limited available chakra to the Sharingan’s drain 38.
  • His interest in Zabuza’s Kubikiribōchō combines a desire for a suitable sword with determination to avoid the mistakes shown in the Diary video 39 49.
  • Although his recorded future battle deeply unsettles him, Kakashi is unsurprised by his apparent victory over Obito: he recalls that Obito never beat him in childhood sparring either 251.
