Background / History

Departure from Konoha

The deaths of her lover and younger brother devastated Tsunade, leading her to leave Konoha and develop hemophobia. Her refusal to return was longstanding rather than a temporary reaction to grief 72 118.

During her travels, she frequented gambling establishments and hot springs. She is shown relaxing after another day of gambling losses when the Diary enters her story 46.

Return and Search for Luo Mang

Luo Mang’s criticism of her gambling, hemophobia, and suitability for leadership enraged Tsunade. She returned to Konoha with Shizune to find the writer, but the Diary’s secrecy rules prevented her from explaining her real motive 62 72.

She rejected Hiruzen’s suggestion that she become Hokage and instead requested Kakashi’s team roster. After identifying Luo Mang, she visited his empty home and learned through the Diary that he was away in the Land of Waves 73 74.

When the team returned, Tsunade seized Luo Mang in the Hokage’s office and took him away despite Kakashi’s objections. Their confrontation became a combat session, which Luo Mang regarded as an opportunity to gain experience under a Sannin 118 119 120.

Protecting the Village and Training Sakura

While waiting for Luo Mang, Tsunade helped investigate Orochimaru’s preparations for the Konoha Crush. Shizune uncovered foreign spies, but their search initially found no trace of Orochimaru 104.

Tsunade then approached Sakura to assess her medical-ninjutsu talent and took her as a student. Watching Sakura struggle to keep pace during the Chunin Exams made Tsunade reconsider teaching medical skills before taijutsu: she recognized that Sakura could not always rely on others for protection 130 135 152.

Alongside Jiraiya, Tsunade confronted Orochimaru and was shaken when he reincarnated Hashirama and Tobirama. The subsequent battle involved Danzō and his guards, and Tsunade blamed delayed reinforcements for their failure to capture the attackers 158 159 173.

Hinata’s Tenseigan

Hinata’s unexpected eye evolution surprised Tsunade despite her access to the Diary. She accompanied Hiruzen and Jiraiya to the infirmary and examined Hinata after she regained consciousness 179 181 183.

Tsunade found no serious injury, only weakness. Looking directly into Hinata’s eyes left her dazed, convincing her that the transformation was exceptionally powerful even though she could not fully explain its state 184.

Election and Hiruzen’s Death

Hiruzen repeatedly encouraged Tsunade to succeed him. By Sakura’s victory over Temari, Tsunade was beginning to consider herself suited to leadership, while Hiruzen promoted her candidacy to the Daimyo 73 191 222.

Konoha’s next Hokage was to be selected through a five-day public vote between Tsunade and Jiraiya. Tsunade was widely favored because of her reputation, strength, and connection to the First Hokage, and the final count strongly favored her 236 237 265.

Before the result was announced, the Diary warned that Hiruzen was in danger at a meeting with Danzō. Tsunade and Jiraiya rushed to the location but arrived after the Fourth Raikage and Killer B had killed their teacher 265.

Tsunade activated the Strength of a Hundred Seal and attacked in grief-stricken fury. After the Cloud brothers mysteriously disappeared, she turned on Danzō. She and Jiraiya later suspected Luo Mang’s involvement in the unexplained disappearances, but believed such power might carry limits or a substantial cost 266 269 271.

Fifth Hokage

Before the formal announcement, Tsunade challenged Koharu and Homura over village records and demanded access to Konoha’s accounts. Their resistance exposed an immediate struggle over the elders’ entrenched influence 278.

Tsunade was officially announced as the Fifth Hokage after Hiruzen’s death delayed the result. At her inauguration, she resisted demands for immediate retaliation against Kumogakure, calmed the crowd, and had Shizune document a speaker she suspected of being a Cloud spy 283.

Her response to Kumogakure combined negotiations, demands for resources, and military readiness. She proposed using Sunagakure’s poison and puppet specialists at the front of any campaign, with their share of the spoils tied to their contribution, while also pursuing cooperation with Amegakure and other villages 285 286.

Later, Jiraiya presented intelligence on Kumogakure’s competing factions and options ranging from supporting peace-minded leaders to destroying the village. Tsunade had not announced a decision before Iwagakure’s delegation arrived; she proceeded with talks despite the elders’ unwelcome attendance 323 324.

Appearance

  • Hair: Long and blond 46.
  • Build: Voluptuous, with a notably slender waist 72.
  • Complexion: Youthful-looking; the text attributes her smooth skin to the Strength of a Hundred Seal 62 125.
  • Usual clothing: A sleeveless top, loose pale-green coat, shorts, and ninja sandals; she also wears high-heeled sandal boots 72 118.
  • Distinguishing detail: Red-painted toenails 46 72.
  • As Hokage: Wears the Hokage’s robes while conducting village business 285.

Personality

Tsunade is blunt, quick-tempered, and forceful. She repeatedly kicks open the Hokage’s office door, openly criticizes Hiruzen’s smoking, and pursues Luo Mang over his insulting Diary entries. Her gambling losses do little to weaken her confidence that she will win the money back next time 62 73 104 119.

Her personal grudges coexist with strong loyalty to Konoha. She considers Danzō a destructive influence and refuses to excuse threats to the village even from someone who might lend her money. She also challenges the elders’ use of their positions for private advantage 104 278 323.

As a teacher, she is protective and demanding. She revises Sakura’s training when field experience exposes weaknesses and takes pride in her apprentice’s progress, though she is irritated when Sakura looks to Luo Mang rather than her after winning 152 222.

Her battlefield anger can undermine her judgment: after Hiruzen’s death, her powerful attacks become predictable. As Hokage, however, she demonstrates restraint, refusing to risk the village in an impulsive war and seeking allies to reduce Konoha’s casualties 266 283 286.

  • Trains Sakura in medical skills and later broadens her combat instruction 130 135 152 222.

Monster Strength and Taijutsu

  • Uses devastating close-range blows; even an angry strike against a tree demonstrates her destructive strength 104 266.

Strength of a Hundred Seal

  • Already possesses the seal when watching Orochimaru’s battle footage; its effect is associated with her smooth, youthful skin 125.
  • Activates it against the Fourth Raikage and Killer B, then renews it when attacking Danzō 266 269.

  • Nawaki — Deceased younger brother. His death contributed to her departure from Konoha, and she later thinks of him while observing Naruto 72 148.

  • Luo Mang — Diary writer and frequent source of irritation. She resents his insults but recognizes his value to Konoha; contemplated punitive missions are explicitly not intended to endanger his life 62 119 283 337.
  • Hinata Hyuga — Patient whose Tenseigan awakening draws her medical and strategic interest 181 183 184.
  • Konan — Diplomatic visitor whom Tsunade hosts. Their initial politeness gives way to disagreement over whether outsiders should judge Sakura and Luo Mang’s relationship 197 198 200 204.
  • Orochimaru — Former companion and enemy. Tsunade investigates his invasion preparations and fights him alongside Jiraiya 104 158 173.
  • Shimura Danzō — Enemy she associates with corruption and Hiruzen’s death. She attacks him rather than allowing him to redirect the confrontation 104 269.
  • Utatane Koharu and Mitokado Homura — Senior advisers whose resistance to oversight and interference in negotiations bring them into conflict with her 278 323 324.
