Background / History

Earlier life and the prophecy

Jiraiya is Hiruzen Sarutobi’s student and a former teammate of Orochimaru and Tsunade. A veteran of major wars, he is widely admired in Konoha and regarded as a possible successor to the Hokage 47 90 122.

He spared the war orphans Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan and trained them for three years before leaving. Nagato’s Rinnegan led him to consider the boy a candidate for the Child of Prophecy and to research other dōjutsu, including the Sharingan. The three later founded Akatsuki 103 202.

His search for the prophesied savior takes him away from Konoha. He later admits that this responsibility, his village duties, and the possibility of dying have kept him from pursuing a serious romantic relationship 83.

Receiving the Diary

Jiraiya receives a mysterious Diary while staying at an inn in the Land of Fire. Its future recordings reveal Pain’s invasion, Orochimaru’s connection to Otogakure, and the planned Konoha Crush. Unable to identify Pain, he initially suspects that someone killed his former students and stole Nagato’s Rinnegan 47.

The information overturns his lingering hope of bringing Orochimaru home. Once the Diary confirms cooperation with other villages against Konoha, Jiraiya accelerates his investigation of Otogakure, prioritizing the village’s safety over his search for the Child of Prophecy 47 49.

Otogakure battle and Tsukuyomi

At Otogakure, Jiraiya confronts Orochimaru and attempts to capture him. Their battle expands when Itachi intervenes, prompting Jiraiya to summon Fukasaku and Shima, enter Sage Mode, and try to capture both missing-nin 63 64.

Itachi exploits the toads’ genjutsu to incapacitate Orochimaru and escape with him. During the pursuit, Jiraiya threatens Sasuke’s safety as leverage. Itachi retaliates with Tsukuyomi, reveals his undercover service to Konoha, and warns that harming Sasuke would turn him against the village. Jiraiya experiences at least three days of repeated stabbing within the illusion 65.

Fukasaku and Shima take turns guarding him during his recovery. After three days, he can move again but remains pale and mentally strained. He decides to return to Konoha, investigate Luo Mang’s foreknowledge, meet Naruto, and question Hiruzen about Itachi’s role 83.

Return to Konoha and the Chūnin Exams

Further recordings convince Jiraiya that Konoha faces overlapping threats from Akatsuki, Orochimaru, and internal political conflict. He nevertheless recognizes that a predicted alliance between Orochimaru and Sunagakure is not sufficient justification to attack another village 90 94.

After returning, Jiraiya approaches Naruto as a prospective student. His fame attracts a crowd outside the Hokage Building, forcing him to enlist Kakashi in a transformation-based escape. He subsequently wins Naruto’s agreement to train by citing Kakashi’s recommendation and promising powerful ninjutsu 118 122 130.

During the Chūnin Exams, Jiraiya suspects that the visiting Kazekage is Orochimaru in disguise. He publicly claims to be leaving on a mission, then privately obtains a judge’s assignment from Hiruzen so he can investigate without alerting Orochimaru. He observes Luo Mang and Naruto’s group from concealment and recognizes Karin’s potential as an Uzumaki recruit 143 144 150 154.

Jiraiya and Tsunade eventually confront Orochimaru, only to discover Danzō’s involvement in the attack. They fight the conspirators, their supporting shinobi, and reanimated Hokage, but fail to capture Orochimaru or Danzō. Jiraiya and the toad sages sustain injuries; afterward, he reports the battle to Hiruzen and helps calm Tsunade 157 158 159 169 173.

Former students and renewed mentorship

The Diary reveals Danzō and Hanzō’s role in the tragedy that killed Yahiko and transformed Nagato and Konan’s lives. Jiraiya is devastated by the possibility that his former students are responsible for the predicted invasion of Konoha. Later footage confirms Konan’s identity through her appearance and Paper Technique 103 106.

He advocates for Karin’s admission to Konoha and invites Sasuke to join Naruto’s training. His planned lesson combines refinement of Naruto’s Rasengan with Sharingan instruction for Sasuke 189 202.

When he unexpectedly meets Konan in Konoha, their reunion is awkward and painful. She expresses gratitude for his past help while acknowledging that he could not protect them forever. Jiraiya accepts her stated purpose of inspecting the Byakugan and discussing trade, but remains cautious about any threat to the village 213.

Hiruzen’s death and the Kumogakure crisis

Jiraiya and Tsunade reach the mountaintop just as the Fourth Raikage and Killer B kill Hiruzen. Jiraiya retrieves his teacher’s remains, identifies Hinata’s Tenseigan as the attackers’ likely target, and fights alongside Tsunade and the toad sages 265 266 267.

The attackers disappear through Luo Mang’s concealed intervention. A new confrontation follows with Orochimaru, Danzō, and Itachi. Jiraiya and Tsunade defeat Orochimaru’s body, but his escaping white snakes complicate the apparent victory. After Orochimaru and Danzō vanish, Jiraiya and Tsunade suspect Luo Mang’s involvement and turn to caring for Hiruzen’s remains 268 269 270 271.

The Diary subsequently confirms Luo Mang’s responsibility for the Raikage and Killer B’s deaths. Jiraiya shifts from mourning toward plans to secure Konoha’s future, including obtaining Kumogakure’s chakra-conducting ore. He also comes to regard Luo Mang as a stronger fit for the Child of Prophecy than his other candidates 277.

Serving as an adviser to Hokage Tsunade, Jiraiya undertakes a mission concerning Kumogakure and returns with Itachi’s intelligence on its conservative and hardline factions. He recommends destroying the village rather than risking renewed aggression—a proposal, not a completed operation 298 323.

He later learns that Orochimaru survived and approached Luo Mang for information about aliens. Anger mixes with reluctant relief at his former teammate’s survival, though Jiraiya rejects the suggestion that he deliberately spared him. After watching further footage, he is astonished by the existence of aliens and the Tenseigan’s full power 336 337.

Appearance

  • Hair: Very long and white 122 130.
  • Equipment silhouette: Carries a huge scroll on his back 213.
  • Everyday bearing: His sleazy appearance and casual manner make Naruto and Sakura initially struggle to reconcile him with the legendary Sannin 122.
  • Sage Mode: Develops toadlike facial features and red markings around his eyes, with Fukasaku and Shima positioned on his shoulders 64 65.

Personality

Jiraiya’s joking, theatrical manner frequently obscures his seriousness. He strikes poses when introducing himself, trades insults with Naruto, and enjoys the Diary’s criticism of his teammates until it targets his own habits. His voyeurism is explicit: he visits hot springs to watch rather than bathe and reacts defensively when Luo Mang mocks him for it 47 63 130 202.

His loyalty centers on Konoha and Mount Myōboku. He is willing to fight Orochimaru despite their history, but affection repeatedly complicates his judgment. His decision to threaten Sasuke during the Otogakure pursuit is presented as an exceptional breach of his usual principles, driven by concern for the village 47 65 336.

Jiraiya generally restrains his grief in public and focuses on practical responsibilities. Following Hiruzen’s death, he collects the remains, steadies Tsunade, and considers Konoha’s security. This pragmatism can become harsh: he favors eliminating Kumogakure as a future threat and extends blame for its aggression beyond its leaders 271 277 323.

Despite his reputation, he is uncomfortable with overwhelming public attention. When villagers surround him with praise, gifts, and calls for him to become Hokage, he chooses to escape rather than enjoy the adulation 122.

  • Uses Sage Art: Goemon, combining oil, fire, and wind into a large advancing wave 64 159.

  • Toad Chant briefly dazes the Fourth Raikage, but Killer B is unaffected and rescues him 266.
  • The Toad Couple use Genjutsu Frog Call to help stop Orochimaru’s chakra-bearing white snakes from escaping 270.

Elemental Ninjutsu and Evasion

  • Offers Sasuke instruction based on his Sharingan research 202.
  • Previously trained Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan for three years 103.

Equipment / Items

  • Mysterious Diary — supplies Luo Mang’s entries and future recordings. Jiraiya can store it within his mind and summon it into his hand; ordinary bystanders cannot see it. Rules and penalties prevent him from disclosing its existence 47 49 118 122.
  • Diary protection — rejects some outside interference and provides protection during the battle against Danzō’s group. It does not make Jiraiya immune to all genjutsu, as his earlier Tsukuyomi defeat demonstrates 65 173.
  • Large summoning scroll — carried on his back and used when summoning Gamabunta 63 213.

Relationships

  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher. Jiraiya worries over his predicted death, challenges his judgment concerning Danzō, and mourns him after witnessing his actual killing 90 173 265 277.
  • Naruto Uzumaki — Student and the child of Jiraiya’s own student, making him Jiraiya’s “grandstudent.” Their relationship combines affectionate teasing with serious preparation for Naruto’s possible role as savior 83 130 202.
  • Tsunade — Former teammate, battlefield partner, and later Hokage. Jiraiya helps steady her during crises and becomes someone she consults instead of the village elders 173 271 298 323.
  • Orochimaru — Former teammate turned enemy. Jiraiya repeatedly tries to stop him, yet retains affection for their shared past 47 63 336.
  • Fukasaku and Shima — Long-standing mentors and summoned partners who watched him grow up. They guard him during recovery and support his major battles 83 271.
  • Gamabunta — Summoned ally. Their blunt, familiar exchanges continue even in combat 63.
  • Konan, Nagato, and Yahiko — Former pupils. The Diary’s account of their suffering leaves Jiraiya guilty and alarmed about their connection to Akatsuki 103 106 213.
  • Uchiha Itachi — Initially an opponent who severely injures him with Tsukuyomi; later an intelligence contact whose findings Jiraiya brings to Tsunade 65 323.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — A potential pupil whom Jiraiya invites into Naruto’s training. Jiraiya also reassures him about Karin’s admission and teases him about her affection 83 202.
  • Kakashi Hatake — The student of Jiraiya’s own student. Kakashi recommends Naruto for his instruction and helps him evade an admiring crowd 122 130.
  • Luo Mang — Diary writer and a candidate for the Child of Prophecy. Jiraiya secretly watches over him during the Exams and later favors him as the prophesied figure, while recognizing that his attachment is chiefly to those close to him rather than Konoha as a whole 150 277 336.
  • Karin — Prospective village recruit whose Uzumaki heritage and healing constitution Jiraiya recognizes. He advocates for her acceptance into Konoha 154 189 202.
  • Hinata Hyuga — A strategically important Konoha shinobi. Jiraiya studies the Tenseigan’s applications and recognizes both the danger of her chakra absorption and the threat of outsiders targeting her 181 235 266.
  • Danzō Shimura — Internal enemy whose collaboration with Orochimaru and role in his former pupils’ tragedy provoke Jiraiya’s anger 103 159 173.
