| Pinnacle of Legendary rank | 12 | Explicitly placed one step below Epic. She can sustain herself by absorbing mana without ordinary food. The same chapter also calls her an “epic dragon,” but records no promotion. |
| Continued ability refinement; no confirmed rank change | 36 | Reveals that she has spent her imprisonment continuously strengthening and exploring her abilities, despite appearing inactive. No new realm or specific technique is named. |
Background / History
Valentina’s mother drove her out of the nest while she was still a hatchling. She subsequently wandered alone, claiming temporary territories and abandoning them when bored. She never established a permanent nest or maintained the company of other dragons, believing that strength meant solitude 13.
She entrusted necessary dealings with others to a human sorceress she had “captured.” When the sorceress was hunted down and killed while away, Valentina became furious and wanted to destroy the killers and their families. Only much later, when Herbert proposed friendship, did she consider whether she had regarded the woman as a friend 13.
Valentina destroyed four cities, each with ten thousand inhabitants, using Dragon Breath. The Archbishop of Mist personally subdued her. Her recollection describes mistaking him for an ordinary old man and attacking him after failing to drive him away; he defeated her overwhelmingly but did not kill her 2 36.
During centuries of confinement, she endured hunger despite no longer requiring food to survive. With little to do besides sleep, she explored her abilities and continued training. A premonition that Herbert might offer a new opportunity eventually prompted her to approach him 6 12 36.
Appearance
- Build: Tall and slender, with a healthy, shapely figure and refined, strikingly valiant features 2 20 28.
- Hair: Fiery red; initially a wild, tangled mass obscuring her face. Herbert cuts it to medium length, leaving loose wisps across her forehead 2 21.
- Eyes: Lava-red, with slit pupils that widen into circles when she is startled by Herbert’s scent 2 5.
- Voice: Husky and magnetic, although her frequent profanity makes it grating to Herbert 2.
- Human form: Has no visible scales or obvious beast traits. Her strength, eating habits, and preference for sleeping curled up on the ground reveal her inhuman nature 28.
- Self-image: Initially prefers her powerful Dragon form; seeing her newly groomed reflection makes that preference waver 21.
Personality
Valentina is proud, quick-tempered, and openly defiant. She initially tries to exploit Herbert’s humiliation by offering to kill his enemies in exchange for freedom. When he refuses to engage, she responds with insults, sulking, and threats. She can hold a grudge overnight, but food often dissolves her anger just as quickly 2 5 20.
Her fierce exterior conceals a capacity for concern and a lack of experience with companionship. Herbert interprets her warning about the deeper prison as kindness and treats her differently from prisoners who deliberately attack him. She tentatively accepts friendship and becomes unusually cooperative when he tends to her hair and cleans her face 6 13 14 21 28.
She is instinctively perceptive rather than formally knowledgeable. Raised without guidance, she knows little about sealing arrays, yet readily suspects hidden motives and detects changes in Herbert. Her lifelong isolation also leaves her inexperienced with romance: his staged confession overwhelms her judgment before its actual purpose becomes clear 17 28 36 37.
Abilities & Skills
Dragon Breath
- Destroyed four cities of ten thousand inhabitants each 2.
- Used against the Archbishop of Mist, but could not overcome him 36.
- Her destructive capabilities rank among the highest of the monastery’s prisoners, despite her placement nearest the entrance as the least threatening inmate 2 44.
Dragon Might
- Radiates overwhelming draconic pressure even through multiple layers of restraints 2.
- Merely speaking with her initially leaves Herbert feeling suffocated 2.
- Herbert ceases to notice the pressure after receiving the Evil God’s mark; he suspects the change comes from his blessing rather than deliberate restraint by Valentina 6.
Strength and Physiology
- Her hands contain enough strength to tear metal apart or crush Herbert’s skull 13 28.
- Easily consumes wooden skewers and chicken bones. Dragon digestion can also process ore to strengthen scales 11 21.
- Can survive on mana alone, although this does not remove hunger or the pleasure of eating 12.
- Remains hungry after eating half a roast pig 28.
Forms
- Possesses both a Dragon form and a fully human-looking form 21 28.
- Herbert requests a half-human, half-Dragon transformation so he can touch her tail, but the encounter does not establish that she performs it 37.
Scent Detection
- Notices Herbert’s newly appealing scent immediately after his supernatural marking 5.
- Later distinguishes an additional, ancient scent after he acquires the Dragon King inheritance 28.
- Detects an unusual “fishy smell” shortly before the prison intrusion becomes apparent 40 42.
Bloodline Intuition
- Instinctively seeks opportunities and avoids lethal danger; her survival rule is to flee threats that can kill her and confront those that cannot 36.
- A premonition encourages her to speak with Herbert in hopes of finding a new opportunity 36.
- Does not reliably distinguish safety from suffering: she senses no lethal threat from the Archbishop, but is still defeated and imprisoned 36.
Hair as a Monster Material
- Herbert secretly collects her cut hair and later swallows one strand 21 28.
- Through Nenasya’s material-based method, it provides access to the Dragon King inheritance, granting Herbert, not Valentina, fire immunity and the ability to strengthen his body through flames 27 28.
- Valentina detects the resulting scent change but does not discover its source 28.
Equipment / Items
- Hand mirror — Given by Herbert after her haircut. She uses it to examine her transformed appearance 21.
Relationships
- Herbert Albert — Her warden and tentative friend. Their initially hostile exchanges develop through meals, teasing, and personal care. He genuinely responds to her kindness, but also conceals his plan to obtain monster materials from her 2 13 14 21 28.
- Archbishop of Mist — Defeated and imprisoned her after she attacked him. His lack of killing intent exposed a limitation in her danger-sensing intuition 2 36.
- Unnamed human sorceress — A captive who handled Valentina’s interactions with others. Her death provoked grief expressed as anger; Valentina later wonders whether their bond was friendship 13.
- Mother — Expelled her from the nest as a hatchling, beginning her solitary upbringing 13.
Story Role / Major Arcs
| Chapters | Development |
|---|---|
| 2 5 6 | Establishes the danger of Herbert’s reform assignment. Her failed escape bargain gives way to curiosity about his scent and an ambiguous warning about the deeper prison. |
| 11 12 13 | Herbert uses honey-glazed meat skewers to build familiarity rather than force submission. Valentina tentatively accepts friendship and refrains from attacking his offered hand. |
| 17 20 21 | Accepts Herbert’s grooming and experiences being cared for as something new. The haircut simultaneously supplies him with dragon material. |
| 27 28 | Her hair contributes to Herbert’s inheritance. When she notices his ancient scent, he deliberately provokes her to divert further investigation. |
| 35 36 37 | Herbert seeks refuge near her, then stages a romantic-sounding request that turns out to concern her tail. She erupts in embarrassment and anger; he interprets her reduced profanity as evidence that she still honors their agreement. |
| 40 44 | Detects an unusual smell during the intrusion sequence. Herbert later infers that she battered the defiler before Freime’s singing further destroyed its body, sparing him a dangerous confrontation. |
