Background / History

The Book of the Night Sky was created in the Old Belka Kingdom. After the kingdom disappeared, the grimoire preserved knowledge that no longer existed elsewhere. Successive masters maintained that legacy and added spells gathered during their travels across different planes of existence 19.

One master eventually came to resent the duty of preserving a civilization with no future and turned that resentment into hatred. Its altered programming subsequently caused repeated catastrophes over several centuries, killing its hosts and devastating their surroundings. The Time-Space Administration Bureau lost numerous Mages to the relic; an earlier transport incident killed Chrono’s father, Lindy’s husband 19 30 37 44.

Neither Hayate nor Huo Lin remembers when Hayate acquired the book; it seemed to have been with her since childhood. It chose Hayate because she possessed magical power, then continuously drained that power. When her reserves became insufficient, it began consuming her life force, causing paralysis 2 14.

After awakening as a magical girl, Huo Lin identified the book as the cause of Hayate’s illness. Her infinite mana immediately fulfilled its activation requirement, but the fully charged Device went berserk. She carried it outside and suppressed it with raw mana, leaving a pit more than twenty meters deep near Takadanobaba Station. Fate later identified the incident as a contained dimensional rift rather than an ordinary explosion 2 3.

Containment & Access Restrictions

• Continuous suppression: Huo Lin keeps the book dormant by enveloping it in enormous quantities of raw mana at every moment 2.
