• Energy storage varies: Hayate’s flying Device stores no energy itself; its operating duration depends entirely on her mana supply 39.

Intelligent Devices and Related Constructs

• Devices with artificial intelligence exist, but Huo Lin distinguishes them from the spirit-like intelligence she finds in the Mist Card 17.

Combat and Defense

Known Devices

Background / History

Devices are the product of thousands of years of magical development. Their encoded functions make established spells readily usable, contrasting with Huo Lin’s early approach of designing magic from its basic principles 12.

The Book of the Night Sky teaches Huo Lin about Device-assisted transformations, but its corruption and ownership bond with Hayate prevent her from using it as her own functional Device. Its danger prompts her to pursue independent spell study and eventually construct tools herself 5 12 13.

Graham’s gift of mithril and magic crystals makes her single-function prototype project possible. Huo Lin completes Changing Stage, then confirms Hayate’s magical ability by letting her activate it 14 17 18 19.

Her later work includes a second Changing Stage for Sakura, completed in three days in exchange for Tomoyo making twenty outfits for the twins. Hayate’s safety-focused flying Device takes four weeks to develop. Huo Lin subsequently proposes a Barrier-based protective Device for Hayate, but it remains a research goal in the supplied chapters 28 39 45.

Ownership and Malfunction

• Ownership can restrict access: Huo Lin cannot rewrite the Book of the Night Sky’s corrupted code because Hayate, not Huo Lin, is its master. She lacks access to its administrative interface 30.

• Repair has a deadline: The Book’s core regenerates within three minutes. Its replacement must be entered manually by the master before that happens 37.
• Transfer remains uncompleted: Hayate consents to relinquishing the Book, but by Chapter 50 Huo Lin has suppressed another outbreak rather than completed the proposed core replacement 38 50.
