Background / History

Gu Wenze married Qiao Hua after a hotel scandal threatened his company’s stock price. He believes she drugged him and arranged for compromising photographs to reach the media, forcing him into marriage. Qiao Hua previously maintained her innocence, but he rejected her explanations. When Gu Junxing later suggests that the incident may have been misunderstood, Wenze continues to cite the waiter’s confession and the circulated photographs as proof against her 1 11 34.

Their marriage has lasted three years when Jiang Nan returns from abroad. During that period, Wenze excludes Qiao Hua from family gatherings and important social occasions and treats their physical relationship as separate from emotional commitment. After learning that Jiang Nan’s family has gone bankrupt, he pays her debts and transfers a property worth tens of millions into her name. Qiao Hua’s attempts to stop their contact only bring him closer to Jiang Nan 1 2 17 40.

Wenze eventually reopens the investigation into the incident that led to the marriage. He orders his assistant to find everyone who encountered him and Qiao Hua at the bar on the night Jiang Nan went abroad. The investigation locates a waiter who admits that a woman instructed him to drug Wenze’s drink and take him to a room; the waiter identifies Wenze’s former secretary, who also resigned shortly after the incident. By the time Wenze confronts You Xiaonian over Jiang Nan’s later drugging attempt, he explicitly describes the circumstances of his marriage to Qiao Hua as a misunderstanding 62 69 86.

His relationships with the Ruan family date to childhood, when the families were neighbors and Ruan Hanli followed him around. The Ruan family moved away seven years before his later visit with Qiao Hua, after which contact became infrequent, although ties between the older generations continued. Hanli possesses childhood photographs of them together and claims that he once promised to marry her 144 151.

Wenze tells his mother that he previously experienced the kind of hardship he imposes on Junxing by sending him away to manage a company. He uses this explanation to present Junxing’s reassignment to Haicheng as necessary training, without revealing their conflict over Qiao Hua 114.

Original-Novel Storyline

The following events belong to the original plot Qiao Hua remembers, not the altered events unfolding after her transmigration:

  • After Qiao Hua announces her pregnancy, Jiang Nan congratulates Wenze but says she will leave the city. Wenze refuses to lose Jiang Nan and forces Qiao Hua to abort the child 2.
  • While trying to protect Jiang Nan, he shoves Qiao Hua into a wall, causing a threatened miscarriage. He never visits during her subsequent half-month hospitalization, remaining with Jiang Nan instead 2.
  • Ruan Hanli successfully steals confidential company documents, causing substantial losses. In the altered storyline, Wenze acts on Qiao Hua’s thoughts and prevents the theft from succeeding 169 170.
  • He does not intervene in You Xiaonian and Shen Zhen’s relationship, and his friendship with Xiaonian does not break down over that issue. His later assistance to Qiao Hua and Shen Zhen departs from this remembered plot 178.

Appearance

Gu Wenze is described as handsome, tall, and physically imposing, with a polished bearing associated with wealth and privilege 1 12 24 32.

  • Eyes: Deep, dark eyes, frequently described through their cold or intense gaze 3 13.
  • Build: A tall, straight figure and broad, solid back 17 32.
  • Clothing: Often wears suits; his dark suit and composed posture emphasize his distinguished public appearance 30 32.
  • Hands: Long fingers 24.
  • Childhood appearance: A photograph shows him at approximately eight or nine years old; Qiao Hua finds his childhood features handsome and almost mixed-race in appearance 151.
  • Appearance during Qiao Hua’s disappearance: When he finds her at her shop, he has lost weight and appears sleep-deprived, with bloodshot eyes, stubble, and a crooked tie 189.
  • Injuries: Sustains wounds to his back while protecting Qiao Hua from Jiang Nan’s attack, and later suffers a gunshot wound to the back while shielding her from Chen Xingjian 136 139 253 255.

Personality

Wenze habitually interprets Qiao Hua’s actions as manipulation. Her earlier jealousy and desperate attempts to preserve their marriage become his explanation for almost everything she does, including her newfound indifference and sincere requests for divorce. Even hearing thoughts that contradict his assumptions does not immediately make him abandon them 1 3 12 30.

His treatment of marriage is controlling and coercive. He asserts that intimacy is Qiao Hua’s marital duty, makes unwanted sexual advances, and tries to dictate her employment and movements. Although he previously rejected her place as his wife, he increasingly invokes his authority as her husband when she seeks distance or spends time with Yan Yu 13 23 25 33 43 45.

His loyalty to Jiang Nan initially makes him excuse conduct he condemns in Qiao Hua. That loyalty gradually weakens as he notices inconsistencies in Jiang Nan’s behavior. At the same time, he begins defending Qiao Hua against relatives’ insults, without accepting her wish to end the marriage 19 25 28 37 39.

After exposing Jiang Nan’s provocative messages, Wenze recognizes that she manipulated his perception of Qiao Hua and regrets his earlier treatment of his wife. He subsequently trusts Qiao Hua during the Ruan family’s necklace accusation and refuses to let childhood connections excuse Ruan Hanli’s attempted theft of company secrets 64 153 154 169.

His growing affection does not initially bring respect for Qiao Hua’s autonomy. He uses surveillance, electronic restraints, bodyguards, basement confinement, and an isolated estate to prevent her from leaving. He also threatens Yan Yu to deter her from harming herself and removes Junxing from the city after discovering his romantic interest in her 87 113 114 189 190.

Wenze is capable of tenderness and emotional vulnerability, particularly when Qiao Hua’s feelings become important to him. He treats her wound, stays beside her in hospital, seeks reassurance that her care is motivated by love rather than obligation, and sincerely promises Junxing that he will treat her well. Nevertheless, jealousy persists even after Qiao Hua confesses her love 114 162 258 261 262.

His protectiveness can become ruthless retaliation. He stabs Zhu Dejie’s hand, threatens the Zhou family with exposure unless they punish Zhou Qiwen, threatens Jiang Nan with the sexual violence she had planned for Qiao Hua, and orders a harassing guest’s legs broken 140 162 197 292.

Later, Wenze shows greater insight into the distinction between love and possession when advising You Xiaonian to let Shen Zhen leave if remaining with him threatens her life. He acknowledges his own previous failures to protect Qiao Hua and takes practical action on her behalf, although he continues monitoring her and reacting possessively to other people’s attention 275 283.

Abilities & Skills

Hearing Qiao Hua’s Thoughts

Wenze can hear Qiao Hua’s unspoken inner voice. His first documented experience occurs at the hospital, where he hears her criticize him despite seeing that she has not spoken 1.

  • Reveals hidden motives: He hears that she genuinely wants him and Jiang Nan together rather than wanting to compete for his affection 3 11 28.
  • Provides otherwise unknown information: Her thoughts alert him to a prediction about his car accident and expose Tan Ruiyu’s motives and history 3 18.
  • Does not guarantee correct judgment: He repeatedly dismisses what he hears as nonsense or continues interpreting Qiao Hua through her former behavior 1 3 12.
  • Kept secret: He deliberately withholds the ability from You Xiaonian, fearing his friend would think he was mentally unwell 13.
  • Not established as general mind-reading: The documented ability concerns Qiao Hua’s thoughts; the context does not establish that he can hear everyone’s inner voice 1 13.
  • Continues during their workplace arrangement: He hears the mockery concealed behind Qiao Hua’s polite behavior after she becomes his secretary 94.
  • Prevents corporate losses: Her thoughts reveal Ruan Hanli’s intended theft of confidential documents. He orders an investigation, catches Hanli, and conceals the true source of his advance knowledge from Qiao Hua 169 170.
  • Exposes concealed mistreatment: He learns that Xia Feiyan confronted Qiao Hua even though Qiao Hua refuses to complain aloud, allowing him to connect her distress with Xia’s behavior 218.
  • Prompts questions about her identity: Her unexplained knowledge of future events and altered personality increasingly trouble him. These suspicions later contribute to his recognition that she is a transmigrator 169 190 259.

Corporate Authority and Financial Resources

As Gu Group president, Wenze controls hiring decisions and has substantial financial resources 1 12.

  • Hires Jiang Nan as his personal secretary, citing her overseas training in human resource management 12.
  • Can offer Qiao Hua a position at his company, though she repeatedly chooses outside employment 15 33.
  • Directs his assistant to investigate Qiao Hua’s hospital visit 23.
  • Gives Gu Junxing a black card and intervenes with their mother to help restore family relations 25 26.
  • Dismisses Jiang Nan after proving that she used her mother’s phone to send messages provoking Qiao Hua 64.
  • Later employs Qiao Hua as his personal secretary, with an agreement that they act like strangers at work 94 144.
  • Orders Junxing to manage a Gu Group subsidiary in Haicheng and forbids him to return without permission 113 114.
  • Hires Ruan Hanli as an intern after pressure from his mother, while assigning her to work with Lin Chao and the other staff rather than sharing Qiao Hua’s office 144.
  • Recruits Xia Feiyan from overseas and pursues expansion into the medical market. He acknowledges her successful negotiation with a difficult foreign client but refuses to treat that achievement as compensation for her mistreatment of Qiao Hua 226 240.
  • Uses his standing to obtain access to residential security footage and threatens legal action against a maid who accuses Qiao Hua of theft 153 176.

Investigation and Security Operations

Wenze employs Lin Chao, other assistants, and bodyguards to investigate past events, monitor people, and locate Qiao Hua 62 111 183.

  • Protective deployment: Takes Qiao Hua’s warning about Fang Yuqing seriously and sends men to protect his grandfather, preventing a fatal fall from a cliff 97.
  • Surveillance: Has Junxing followed after connecting his hospital visits, rental of the adjoining room, and Wenze’s missing phone to Qiao Hua’s escape 110 111.
  • Search coordination: Investigates transport records, surveillance footage, taxi movements, and boat passenger lists when Qiao Hua disappears with Shen Zhen. A Weibo photograph eventually provides a lead 183 186 189.
  • Threat response: Orders Lin Chao to trace Zhou Qiwen’s call after Qiao Hua is kidnapped, then recognizes her location signal and directs him to find Wanlong Factory 201 203.
  • Locating Qiao Hua without her ring: Reaches Chen Xingjian’s hideout despite Chen having removed the tracking ring he believes would allow Wenze to find her 253.

Physical Intervention

Wenze repeatedly uses force to interrupt attacks on Qiao Hua. He kicks away the man assaulting her at You Xiaonian’s party, intervenes during Jiang Nan’s kidnapping plot, and stops Zhou Qiwen’s assault before carrying Qiao Hua away 127 128 135 203.

His protection also involves placing himself between Qiao Hua and weapons. He takes a knife wound during the confrontation with Jiang Nan and later shields Qiao Hua from Chen Xingjian’s gunfire 136 253 255.

Equipment / Items

  • Audi: Its hood is badly dented in a minor collision while Wenze is traveling to see Jiang Nan. He is uninjured, but cancels the visit because the car needs repairs 3.
  • Gift necklace: Gives Jiang Nan an expensive necklace that she later uses in an unsuccessful attempt to frame Qiao Hua for damaging it 14 19.
  • Electronic ankle monitor / Electronic Shackles: Keeps Qiao Hua under electronic monitoring and refuses to remove the device for his grandfather’s birthday gathering. Junxing’s hospital escape plan depends on preventing Wenze from receiving its alert on his phone 87 100 106.
  • Forged divorce certificate: Uses a false certificate to deceive Jiang Nan; later confirms to Qiao Hua that they were never actually divorced 137.
  • First-aid kit: Uses it to apply ointment to Qiao Hua’s untreated wrist wound after returning her to confinement 114.
  • Hillside Manor: An isolated, heavily guarded estate where he orders Qiao Hua confined until the baby is born. Security is later doubled after Zhou Qiwen’s attempted assault 189 190 197.
  • Tracking ring: A ring used to track Qiao Hua is removed during Chen Xingjian’s captivity of her. Chen assumes its absence will prevent Wenze from locating her, but Wenze still reaches them 253.
