Qiao Hua froze, then slowly looked up at Gu Wenze. Something in her eyes seemed to flicker back to life. "You believe me?"
"You have no reason to lie to me."
Those simple, direct words swept through her heart like a gentle breeze, leaving a trace she could barely detect.
Qiao Hua had only said it in passing. She had never expected Gu Wenze to believe her.
Yet he had believed her without a moment's hesitation.
Gu Wenze casually tucked the blanket around her. "I'll investigate this. Focus on recovering, and don't worry about anything else."
Qiao Hua murmured an acknowledgment and settled back against the headboard. The nausea rising in her throat had eased considerably.
Not long afterward, a nurse came in to examine Qiao Hua.
Qiao Hua glanced at Gu Wenze, who was speaking to the doctor by the door, and asked quietly, "How is the baby I'm carrying?"
Thinking Qiao Hua was worried about her baby, the nurse reassured her with a smile. "Don't worry. The fetus is doing well. There are no problems."
Qiao Hua couldn't tell whether she felt disappointed or relieved. But then she thought that if anything really had happened to the baby, Gu Wenze certainly wouldn't have let the matter rest.
Being pregnant was better than being locked in Gu Wenze's basement and forced to make a baby day and night.
When Gu Wenze returned after taking a call, the nurse was just leaving. He sat down beside the bed and asked casually, "What were you talking to the nurse about?"
Qiao Hua feigned composure. "Nothing. I was just asking a few questions."
Gu Wenze didn't give it much thought. He opened the cabinet's top drawer, took something out, and handed it to Qiao Hua.
Qiao Hua gave him a puzzled look.
