Background / History
Marriage and His Daughter’s Disappearance
Madam Jiang and her younger cousin, Little Lin, both fell in love with Ning Xiaotian. He chose Madam Jiang and cherished her after their marriage. Little Lin’s envy intensified after Jiang bore two sons, eventually driving her to arrange an ambush that frightened the pregnant Jiang into premature labor 12.
Little Lin ordered the newborn Ning Sang-sang buried alive, intending to make her parents suffer permanently. The hired man instead abandoned the infant in the grass, allowing her to be rescued. Ning Xiaotian remained unaware of Little Lin’s involvement throughout his daughter’s thirteen-year absence 3 12 13.
Reunion with Ning Sang-sang
When Sang-sang arrived claiming to be his daughter, Ning Xiaotian questioned her despite immediately feeling a sense of kinship. Numerous impostors had approached the residence over the years, and he withheld the news from his wife until he could verify the claim 2.
He recognized the jade pendant he had given Sang-sang when she was a month old, including the characters “Ning” and “Sang” that he had engraved himself. His caution gave way to tears of joy. He brought her inside, ordered food prepared, and promised to compensate for the years they had lost—even after she explained that she had enjoyed a happy upbringing in Ten Thousand Flowers Valley 2 3.
During the reunion, he discovered that he and Ning Chengxiao could hear Sang-sang’s unspoken thoughts. He silently instructed his son to conceal this. Her commentary subsequently exposed Bai Xinrou’s false pregnancy claim, revealing that the child belonged to Lin Shijie rather than Chengxiao 2 3 4.
Exposing Little Lin
When Little Lin tried to discredit Sang-sang as an impostor, Ning Xiaotian heard his daughter’s thoughts recounting the attempted murder and Little Lin’s other schemes against the family. He confronted Little Lin, but initially had no evidence beyond what he had overheard 12 13.
Sang-sang’s thoughts then revealed that Little Lin’s former guard, Chen Ping, had survived her attempt to kill him and was living at Mercy Convent. Ning Xiaotian used this information to bluff that Chen Ping had already confessed everything. Little Lin’s panic strengthened his conviction; he ordered her taken to the Dali Temple and sent people to seize Chen Ping 13.
At the temple, he asked Pei Xingjian to punish Little Lin severely and accepted the junior minister’s assurance that he would not show leniency. Duke Su and Second Master Su arrived seeking her release, bringing Ning Xiaotian face-to-face with his longstanding rivals 15.
Protecting Sang-sang in Society
Ning Xiaotian and Madam Jiang brought Sang-sang to Princess Yongle’s flower-viewing banquet to publicly acknowledge their recovered daughter. He instructed both sons to protect her and promised to stand up for her himself 17.
After Sang-sang’s thoughts exposed Minister Li’s private habits, Ning Xiaotian recognized that the surrounding officials could hear her too. Concerned that she would unknowingly make enemies, he resolved to arrange several highly skilled guards for her protection 19.
When the family returned home, he waited anxiously to learn whether anyone had bullied her. Walking inside with Sang-sang holding his arm visibly lifted his spirits 42.
Personality
Usually calm and composed, Ning Xiaotian becomes openly emotional where Sang-sang is concerned. He cries over their separation, blames himself for failing to protect her, and prioritizes feeding and comforting her over satisfying his curiosity about her gossip. Her accomplishments and upbringing do not affect his acceptance of her 2 3 17.
His indulgence toward Sang-sang contrasts with his stern treatment of his sons. He scolds Chengxiao’s gullibility, reprimands Hui when his behavior unsettles her, and expects both brothers to keep her safe. Against Little Lin, his tenderness becomes cold determination; he rejects her performance of innocence and pursues formal punishment 4 7 13 14.
