Background / History
Ning Hui was born after his older sister, Ning Sang-sang, disappeared. During her absence, Madam Jiang raised him in a manner he describes as treating him like a girl. His mother later worried that Sang-sang might resent him, but their immediate affection reassured her 5 19.
Three years before Sang-sang’s return, Yan Xuanjing saved Hui’s life. Hui subsequently became an enthusiastic follower of the hostage prince, repeatedly seeking his company and calling him “Brother A-Xuan,” despite Yan’s reserved responses 35 37.
When Sang-sang returned to the Ning household, Hui joyfully embraced her and soon discovered that he could hear her unspoken thoughts. His family signaled that he should conceal the discovery. He quickly became her companion on outings and promised to protect her from further harm 5 6.
Appearance
- Pretty, youthful features: Sang-sang calls him a “pretty boy” and remarks that he is attractive enough to resemble a girl 5 6.
- Dark eyes: His eyes are described as blazing with fury when he learns that Little Lin harmed his mother and sister 12.
- Expressive face: His delight at Sang-sang’s praise regularly appears as an uncontrollable smile, sometimes followed by a smug glance at Ning Chengxiao 10 17.
Personality
Hui is mischievous, theatrical, and quick to join Sang-sang’s jokes. His complaints that she has displaced him as the family favorite are playful rather than genuine resentment. Ning Chengxiao considers his continued childish performances a headache, while Sang-sang readily matches his mock drama 7 9.
His affection is backed by action: he punches Chen Zihao for disrespecting Sang-sang, removes her from Chu Aotian’s presence when the prince becomes angry, and follows her into a brothel because he fears for her safety. Praise from his sister delights him and fuels a childish rivalry with Chengxiao over her attention 6 8 17 31 45.
Hui enjoys gossip and public scandals almost as much as Sang-sang. He encourages her to continue gossiping inwardly and eagerly accompanies her to watch Little Lin’s case unfold. Nevertheless, he can recognize another person’s distress: he stops teasing Chengxiao when his brother becomes visibly upset over Bai Xinrou 11 13 19.
He is also trusting and impulsive. He accepts Sang-sang’s improvised explanations for her influential acquaintances, fiercely defends Yan Xuanjing against Chengxiao’s suspicions, and becomes conveniently evasive whenever his brother mentions repayment 8 34 38 46.
Abilities & Skills
Hearing Ning Sang-sang’s Thoughts
Hui can hear Sang-sang’s inner voice even when her lips do not move. He first discovers this during their reunion 5.
- Access to hidden information: Her thoughts reveal family betrayals, threats against Pei Xingjian, and the people responsible for Yan Xuanjing’s poisoning 12 14 36.
- Indirect prompting: He introduces Pei’s investigative achievements and praises Duke Chen’s public reputation to draw out further commentary from Sang-sang 10 14.
- Recognition of other listeners: He infers from Pei’s and Yan’s reactions that they can hear her thoughts too 14 37.
- Enforced silence: A mysterious force blocks attempts to disclose the phenomenon to Sang-sang or ask certain questions about what he hears 5 14 34 46.
- Unreliable warning signals: His attempts to interrupt her thoughts through coughing fail when she interprets them as illness and urges him to seek treatment 45 46.
Physical Confrontation
- Hui strikes Chen Zihao when Chen makes disrespectful advances toward Sang-sang 8.
- No named martial technique or ranked combat level is documented. When Chen boasts about his hired warriors, Chengxiao supplies the threat of stronger opposition 8.
Finances & Possessions
- Allowance: Hui considers a 3,000-tael meal at the Fragrant Drunkard Tower equivalent to half a year’s allowance and worries that his purse cannot bear the expense 8.
- Debt to Chengxiao: He owes his second brother money; Sang-sang identifies the amount as 30,000 taels in her thoughts. Chengxiao can silence his teasing simply by mentioning repayment 34 38.
- Wish to provide for Sang-sang: He resolves to earn money so that he can treat her to meals himself 9.
- Purse: At the Hundred Flowers House, he carries only a few pieces of silver. When Sang-sang considers buying attendants as maids, he wonders about credit or borrowing from Yan Xuanjing 47.
