Background / History
In her previous life, Sang-sang was an entertainment reporter—a paparazzo—who repeatedly stayed up through the night staking out gossip stories. She suddenly died on the street and transmigrated into an abandoned infant in the Great Xiao Dynasty 1.
Her abandonment resulted from Little Lin’s attempt to murder her. Little Lin arranged for the infant to be buried alive, but the hired man took pity on her and left her in the grass instead. Yun Zhongzi, master of Ten Thousand Flowers Valley, adopted her and gave her the same name she had used in her previous life 1 12.
Sang-sang grew up as the valley’s ninth disciple, cherished by her master, five senior brothers, and three senior sisters. Meanwhile, her birth family spent thirteen years grieving her disappearance. Her eldest brother blamed himself because he had been entrusted with watching her; her parents later named their youngest child Ning Hui in the hope that she would return 1 3.
Six months before her return to the Ning household, the Gossip System revealed that her world originated from a tragic novel in which she was a doomed “cannon-fodder” character. It offered rewards for gathering gossip energy and eventually a chance to choose a new life. Guided by the system, she traveled to the capital to reunite with her birth family and seek more gossip 1.
Appearance
Sang-sang has delicate, painting-like features and a lively, spirited bearing. Both Chancellor Pei and Princess Yongle praise her beauty 1 18 21.
- Eyes: Large, bright, and expressive 1 18.
- Complexion: Fair skin, with a small mouth 18.
- Build: Madam Jiang considers her too thin and urges her to eat nourishing soup 6.
- Notable clothing: An exquisite pale-yellow ruqun at the Flower-Viewing Banquet 18.
Personality
Sang-sang is inquisitive, irreverent, and intensely attracted to secrets. Her former profession carries over into a habit of inventing dramatic scenarios, including an imaginary villainous monologue for Ning Hui that she knows does not reflect his actual feelings. She enjoys theatrical exchanges and quickly finds a willing partner in her younger brother 1 7.
Her cheerful outward manner often conceals much sharper private judgments. She notices Bai Xinrou’s fleeting jealousy, anticipates Little Lin’s manipulative performances, and improvises elaborate false acquaintances to conceal her influential connections. However, she also mistakes curiosity about her knowledge for romantic interest and confidently misreads Hua Liuli’s behavior through the original novel’s romance plot 3 8 10 13 27 46.
Having worked herself to death once, she wants a relaxed “salted fish” life centered on food, comfort, and gossip rather than responsibility or romance. She nevertheless comforts her grieving parents and accepts the task of saving her world, after confirming that it does not require a romance with Yan Xuanjing 3 4 18 42.
