Background / History

In her previous life, Xia Wanwan was a twenty-first-century master of mystic arts. She describes herself as the Metaphysics Ancestress, capable of summoning wind and rain, capturing ghosts, and subduing gods. Her death is unusually humiliating: she is blown to death by her ancestral master’s ashes 1 12.

She awakens as Liu Wan’s newborn daughter inside a world she initially recognizes as a novel. In the original plot, servants replace the girl with Xie Huaishan, Xie Jin’an’s son by Xu Rourou, and send the girl to the Abandoned Infant Pagoda. Liu Wan unknowingly raises Huaishan for sixteen years before his recognition of his birth mother drives her to die of rage. He later engineers the destruction of Liu Wan’s birth family 1.

Wanwan’s cries and thoughts reach Liu Wan during the attempted swap. Her mother wakes, removes the cotton stuffed into her mouth, and stops the servants. This prevents the original substitution and gives Wanwan an opportunity to protect her mother from the future she remembers 1.

Previous-Life Abandonment

Before becoming a mystic, Wanwan was abandoned by her previous-life parents after they had a son. She remembers chasing their departing car through the rain and initially believing they were only punishing her for misbehaving. Her master found her after she had gone hungry for three days and took her home. Thereafter, she regarded the sect as her family and her master’s hometown as her homeland 299.

The experience leaves a lasting fear that affection depends on her being a good child. In her new life, wine and a nightmare bring this insecurity to the surface, prompting her to beg Liu Wan not to abandon her. Her parents’ reassurance and the revelation of Xia Siheng’s biological paternity help her accept that she belongs to a loving family 299.

Biological Parentage and Imperial Recognition

Wanwan is initially raised as Xie Jin’an’s daughter, but the emperor already identifies her as Xia Siheng’s child during the dispute over making her a princess. Mama Qing’s hints and Wanwan’s increasing resemblance to Xia Siheng later cause Liu Wan to investigate her conception 41 92 115 127.

Liu Wan eventually tells Wanwan that Old Madam Xie drugged her and sent her to the Ninth Prince’s bed to save Xie Jin’an. Wanwan was conceived during that encounter. Hearing the truth, Wanwan embraces Xia Siheng as her biological father and asks him to protect her mother 299.

Before this explanation, the emperor formally admits Wanwan into the Imperial Family, grants her the surname Xia, and bestows the title Princess Ximing in recognition of her service to Great Xia. The edict explicitly leaves her in Liu Wan’s care. When she refuses to kneel, the emperor permits her to receive it without doing so 123.

True Nature of Her Transmigration

The Grandmaster later reveals that the supposed novel is a historical record he wrote under the pen name Jin Wangwang. Wanwan had read it without recognizing the author’s identity. The world is real, and her transmigration was arranged to help correct history and ultimately confront Jiyan, the Demon God 330.

This revelation connects the present world to the World-Suppressing Tower, the Five Elements Spirit Pearl, and Jiyan, all of which Wanwan knew from her twenty-first-century sect. She is furious that the Grandmaster concealed the nature of the task and placed such a burden on her 330.

While unconscious after receiving the Qilin’s power, she meets the Patriarch in a dream beyond the Heavenly Dao’s reach. He explains that the current Heavenly Dao, Yue Xuanji, discarded her emotions and desires, which became the demon embryo Shen Chuanlian. He also reveals that Liu Wan possesses a lotus sacred body and was the demon embryo’s mother in a previous life 516.

Appearance

Wanwan is a fair-skinned, rosy, chubby baby with large, bright, watery eyes and soft, plump cheeks. Her mother, brothers, the Fifth Princess, and Consort Ling repeatedly remark on her beauty 1 2 3 6 43.

  • Expressive face: Puffs out her cheeks, flushes red, and turns away when angry or offended 14 33 47.
  • Toothless gums: As an infant, cannot chew the meat she steals and instead sucks out its juices. She later develops small baby teeth 21 43 179 265.
  • Wedding outfit: Wears a festive red padded jacket, with her hair tied into two small tufts using red cords and fluffy pom-poms 46.
  • Developing resemblance: Liu Wan notices that her daughter’s developing features resemble Xia Siheng, particularly the face he had as a child 115.
  • Toddler movement: Initially toddles unsteadily and continues to speak with childish pronunciation despite her sophisticated inner thoughts 81 92 110.
  • Qilin horns: Has two small Qilin horns after receiving the divine beast’s power. They are dimmed and blackened after her confrontation with the Phoenix; Yuanbao later notices that they are gone 503 526 544.
  • Disheveled after adventures: Returns filthy after fights and supernatural encounters. After confronting the Phoenix, she is covered in ash and has singed hair 76 92 526.

Personality

Wanwan is fiercely devoted to Liu Wan. She comforts her mother through her thoughts, condemns relatives who exploit her, and promises to take her away from the Marquis’s household when she grows up. Even the prospect of becoming a princess initially troubles her because she does not want to leave her mother 4 15 39.

Her inner voice is irreverent, blunt, and often mischievous. She delights in gossip, laughs at her opponents’ humiliations, and openly judges the adults’ schemes. Her affection for beautiful women survives transmigration: she wants to cuddle them despite the risks their rank poses to her anxious mother 8 15 23 33.

She is also practical about supernatural power. Although she considers saving Xiao Ju, she weighs the spiritual cost against losing her speech and slowing her development. Rather than immediately pursue the dangerous Taoist behind the ghost, she leaves a scent marker for later tracking 45.

Her infant body increasingly influences her behavior. She sucks her thumb, craves foods beyond milk, and becomes frustrated with her undeveloped speech and thinking. Sneaking donkey-hide gelatin cake causes a severe nosebleed and earns her punishment from Liu Wan 15 21 34.

Food, Fighting, and Mischief

Wanwan’s appetite remains one of her strongest motivations as she grows. She brushes aside Xia Qianlin’s marriage proposal in favor of more meat mush, mourns roast chicken lost during her kidnapping, and demands compensation when an evil spirit destroys her Beggar’s Chicken 76 139 141 210.

She is eager to challenge opponents and takes being laughed at as a serious grievance. Her willingness to enter a kidnapper’s sack comes partly from wanting a fight, while Daoist Wumo’s dismissal of her challenge leads her to beat him unconscious. After returning home, however, she apologizes for worrying Liu Wan and resolves to tell her mother before entering danger again 134 136 141.

Her affection for her family often appears through food: she tries to bring roast chicken home to Liu Wan and buys her mother’s favorite plum blossom cakes during a shopping trip 141 229 230.

Insecurity and Family Attachment

Despite her confident claims of being a powerful ancestress, Wanwan fears being unwanted. Her previous-life abandonment causes nightmares and anxiety over the possibility that a future younger brother could displace her. Liu Wan and Xia Siheng repeatedly reassure her that their love is not conditional 295 299.

As her sense of belonging strengthens, she becomes able to imagine younger siblings without assuming she will be discarded. She later tells Xia Siheng that even ten additional children would not make her parents abandon her and asks him to have another child 450.

Her love for Liu Wan also drives extreme self-sacrifice. She secretly feeds her mother blood from her heart for a month and hides the pain so that no one will tell Liu Wan what she has endured 531.

Compassion, Secrecy, and Vulnerability

Wanwan can be generous even toward enemies. Her offer of an apple and protective gourds temporarily softens the Eldest Princess’s hostility, while she later exchanges valuable pills and herbs for the princess’s promise to protect her secret 139 339.

She recognizes that public knowledge of her abilities could endanger both herself and her family. Although she acts unconcerned when discussing the Demon God, private divination reveals fear that she is not yet strong enough to defeat Jiyan. She binds promises and erases memories to conceal her involvement in supernatural conflicts 338 339.

Her immense power does not eliminate childish fears. She reduces assassins to ashes partly to avoid seeing frightening corpses, then breaks down when Xia Siheng brings her near bodies after his revenge 338 339.

Her concern extends beyond her own family. She helps develop a public-welfare proposal with the emperor and responds sympathetically when Princess Liuli is abandoned after staying behind to help her 251 518.

Abilities & Skills

Audible Inner Voice

Wanwan’s thoughts can be heard by certain people without her speaking aloud. She initially believes she is communicating only with her mother, while other listeners gradually discover the ability 1 12 43.

Listener Documented evidence
Liu Wan Hears Wanwan’s pleas, family secrets, and warnings from the attempted infant swap onward 1.
Xie Zi Xing, later Liu Zi Xing First mistakes the voice for a ghost; later responds to Wanwan’s opinions of his handwriting. Continues hearing her thoughts as she grows 2 12 110 560.
Xie Zi Mu, later Liu Zimu Hears the account of his original tragic future and resolves to protect his mother 3 12.
Emperor Reacts to her thoughts during the household’s punishment; later recognizes their private connection 13 40.
Xia Siheng Initially wonders where the voice originates, then listens to her supernatural advice while hiding his awareness. Also hears the fears expressed in her nightmare 42 43 299.
Minister Liu Reacts to her inner complaints about beginning lessons 47.
Lady Liu Acts with Liu Wan on Wanwan’s warning about the household’s future destruction 47.
Liu Shi Hears her revelations about Li Duoduo’s deception and is shaken by them. Later explicitly tells Liu Wan that he can hear Wanwan’s thoughts 50 59.
Xia Qianlin Hears Wanwan’s thoughts but conceals the fact when explaining how she saved him, fearing that others might regard her as a monster 75 76.
Her former master / Mystic Sect immortal Hears her thoughts during their reunion through the Glazed Glass Lamp 86.
  • The ability is not universal: Pan Chun cannot hear the voice when Liu Wan first asks about it 1.
  • Wanwan does not consistently know who can hear her; she wishes Xia Siheng could receive information that he is already silently noting 45.
  • Liu Wan asks Liu Shi to keep the ability secret so that others will not mistake Wanwan for a supernatural threat and harm her 59.
  • Wanwan also hears Xia Qianlin’s thoughts during the attack on his Dragon Qi 75.

Knowledge of the Novel

Wanwan remembers the original story’s relationships, betrayals, and disasters. Her warnings allow relatives to question events that would otherwise appear harmless 1 6 47 50.

  • Identifies Huaishan as Xie Jin’an and Xu Rourou’s child, exposing the purpose of the attempted swap 1.
  • Warns that Huaishan will steal Zi Mu’s achievements and kill Zi Xing over their cousin 2 3.
  • Recalls the approaching flood and the opportunity it would give Xie Jin’an to gain promotion and elevate Xu Rourou 21.
  • Reveals Qing Sheng’s original fate, prompting Liu Wan to warn her against accepting food and entering the Third Master’s courtyard 24.
  • Identifies Xu Bo as Huaishan’s grandfather and a spy involved in the future destruction of all fifty-eight residents of the Minister’s Residence 47.
  • Recognizes Huaishan’s attack on Xia Qianlin as an event originally meant to occur much later and suspects that her presence has accelerated it 75.
  • Recalls the future threat to her young cousin and remains alert to Huaishan’s interest in her 110.
  • Limit: Her memory is incomplete. She cannot recall the full circumstances of Consort Ling’s haunting and is confused by unexpected changes to Xie Jin’an’s story 28 39.
  • Unread material: Remembers that there may have been bonus chapters about Liu Wan and the villainous uncle, but she did not finish reading them 54.
  • Revised understanding: Learns that the “novel” was actually the Grandmaster’s historical record, not a fictional world. Her foreknowledge therefore derives from recorded history whose course she has been sent to change 330.
  • Continuing uncertainty: Cannot tell Liuli whether she appeared in the record or what role she had, even after recognizing the pen name Jin Wangwang 490.

Divination and Prophetic Words

Wanwan retains fortune-telling knowledge and identifies “words that become prophecy” as her strongest skill 4 11.

  • Reads darkness and dampness between the Fifth Princess’s brows as a sign of danger involving water 6.
  • Her criticism and subsequent praise coincide with Zi Xing’s handwriting deteriorating and improving 12.
  • Her angry thoughts after being abandoned at Golden Mountain Temple are followed by lightning destroying the departing family carriage 17.
  • Authorial clarification attributes both Liu Wan’s awakening during the drugged childbirth and Wanwan’s early ability to sit up to this skill 114.
  • Promises to help the captured cat cultivate into a spirit; Liu Wan remembers that Wanwan’s words may come true 59.
  • Her word-triggered power prevents the newly transformed Yuanbao from leaving. He also fears that her threat to turn him back into a cat could be fulfilled 211.
  • Inadvertently causes fatal consequences for the Tian Family Elders with her words, then sends their ghosts away rather than destroying them 244.
  • Works through a private divination that indicates she still cannot defeat Jiyan at that stage 338.
  • Limits: A divination attempt fails when she investigates Xie Jin’an’s unexpected fate. Following the lightning incident, she falls asleep; Liu Wan concludes that making her words come true drains her strength 17 28.
  • Unreadable identity: Cannot perceive the karmic ties or divine the identity of the injured boy later revealed as Shen Chuanlian, making her suspicious of his connection to the supernatural battle 455.

Spiritual-Energy Absorption

Wanwan replenishes herself through Heaven and Earth Spiritual Energy. She seeks the palace for its dragon qi and finds particularly nourishing energy beneath Xia Zhao’s coral tree 12 14.

  • Buries herself in soil to absorb earth energy 14 15.
  • Receives spiritual nourishment from yellow rosewood 41.
  • Uses stored energy to force her infant body to speak 15.
  • Returns to the Coral Tree for replenishment, including a shared burial with the emperor and Empress Dowager 75 111.
  • The Coral Tree’s energy supports accelerated cultivation and bodily development 114.
  • Receives spiritual power from Yuanbao while secretly using her heart’s blood to heal Liu Wan 531.
  • Early limit: Saying “Mama” nearly exhausts the energy she replenished at the palace. Saving Xiao Ju would also cost her speech and slow her development 21 45.
  • Overdraft: Excessive expenditure can leave her unconscious despite a healthy pulse. The Begonia Jade Beads require purification and replenishment before helping her recover from one such episode 147.
  • Improved control: By the later evil-spirit ambush, the Begonia Jade Beads obey her and no longer drain her power 281.
  • Continuing cost: Large lightning attacks and prolonged healing can still exhaust her 338 525.

Healing and Rejuvenation

Wanwan’s burial ritual produces remarkable effects on the Empress Dowager, attracting wider palace interest 39 40.

  • Removes the Dowager’s chronic cold-weather leg pain 39.
  • Leaves her skin firmer and smoother, with wrinkles disappearing and her appearance returning to that of twenty years earlier 39.
  • Inspires palace attendants, Xia Zhao, and Liu Wan to try the same pit; equivalent results for them are not documented 40.
  • The ritual’s reputation persists: a black-clad woman later takes Wanwan away at night to be buried alongside her in hopes of becoming younger 472.
  • Uses medicines and spiritual power to stop Liu Wan’s wounds from worsening after the Phoenix attack, collapsing after the immediate treatment 523 525.
  • Secretly supplies blood from her heart for a month to restore Liu Wan, supported by Yuanbao’s spiritual-power transfers 531.

Ghost Perception and Subjugation

Wanwan senses that Consort Ling’s paralysis is caused by a ghost rather than an illness the imperial physicians can treat 39 43.

  • Overpowers Xiao Ju, detaches her head, and rides it before returning it to Xia Siheng 44.
  • Reattaches the head backward, leaving Xiao Ju to correct it 45.
  • Marks Xiao Ju with a drop of milk so she can later trace the Nanmei Taoist by its scent 45.
  • Knows that Xiao Ju’s incomplete soul will perish at dawn 45.
  • Identifies Daoist Wumo as the person who sent the ghost to harm Consort Ling 84.
  • Expels Huaishan’s soul from Xia Qianlin and forces it to return stolen Dragon Qi 75.
  • Captures ghosts with Purple-Gold Gourds, manipulating the rules of the artifacts through questions and silence 138.
  • Burns and disperses an evil spirit’s smoky body with slaps, then forces it to submit to questioning 210.
  • Recognizes the curse preventing a captive spirit from naming its master and explains that harm to the spirit will rebound on the caster 210.
  • Casually handles evil spirits and disperses one with a single hammer blow during a battle in which other practitioners struggle 245.
  • Collects attacking spirits into a cloth bag when simply killing them proves difficult 281.
  • Disperses Xi Cha’s baleful aura when the Demon God’s Right Guardian attacks her 470.

Talismans, Magical Crafting, and Artifacts

Wanwan retains advanced talisman knowledge and access to objects prepared in her former life. Her creations include explosive, concealment, movement, and protective effects 92 179 415 416 419 457.

  • Uses an Exorcism Talisman against the soul attacking Xia Qianlin 75.
  • Retrieves Explosive Talismans from her Cosmic Bag and activates them with incantations. An enhanced version releases spiritual energy capable of seriously injuring an undying divine soul 92 179.
  • Copies a difficult, golden-glowing talisman in a single stroke after seeing it once, astonishing Daoist Qianyun 415.
  • Learns the incantation for enlarging a magical boat simply by hearing it and applies it to her Brass Boat 415.
  • Supplies invisibility talismans for herself, Zi Xing, and Qianyun during the Death Warrior Camp infiltration 416.
  • Uses a teleportation talisman to extract the group after Qianyun is stabbed 419.
  • Creates the Stabby Sword, capable of attacking people, ghosts, and evil spirits that touch Liu Wan. It does not strike when Liu Wan initiates contact 457.
  • Designs the Phoenix Tail from the Phoenix’s spine and identifies its feathers as materials for defensive clothing 526.

Spiritual Control and Concealment

  • Binds the Eldest Princess’s promise of secrecy by placing spiritual power in her forehead 339.
  • Erases guards’ and attendants’ memories to hide her role in the destruction of Xia Siheng’s enemies 339.
  • Activates the Soul-Control Technique within Shen Chuanlian, interrupting his baleful-aura attacks and compelling his movements 467 468.
  • Casts a barrier around a room to prevent others from spying on a sensitive conversation with Liu Wan 535.
  • Gives Liu Wan a small wooden gourd intended to protect her against bad people and evil spirits through a spoken invocation. Its demonstration briefly dims the daylight 331.
  • The protective gourd proves important in surviving the crisis at the Divine Temple 407.

Lightning and Direct Combat

Wanwan’s supernatural strength increasingly enables her to fight both physical and spiritual opponents despite her small body 92 136 265.

  • Defends herself against Huaishan’s attempt to push her into a lake with an improbably heavy iron hammer, chasing and beating him 92.
  • Channels power through the Begonia Jade Beads to overwhelm Daoist Wumo, then incapacitates guards with punches, a knee strike, and a hammer 136.
  • Holds Noble Lady Snow’s fully empowered blade immobile despite the opponent’s divine gu and Red Ghost Demonic Art 265.
  • Calls down lightning powerful enough to turn assassins into ashes 338.
  • Wields lightning through her shovel against Ci Mang, openly rebuking and threatening the Heavenly Dao when it restricts her attack 428.
  • Strikes Shen Chuanlian on the head with an iron shovel and disperses his guardian’s attacking baleful aura 470.
  • Her unconscious body still swings the shovel at Shen when he tries to wake her 516.
  • Uses the Phoenix Tail as both a flexible weapon and a straightened thrusting weapon, pouring her spiritual and divine-beast power into attacks against Yue Xuanji 558 559 560.
  • Limits: Shen’s newly acquired Phoenix wings repel her attack and injure her with the resulting shock wave. Her earlier threat to seal him inside herself is an intended method, not a completed feat 524.
  • Heavenly consequences: Xia Siheng senses the heavens’ anger after her mass lightning attack and tells her to avoid further public disturbances 351.

Divine-Beast Power and Spiritual Medicine

  • Supplies a Third-Grade Elixir during Yuanbao’s hundred-year Cat Spirit tribulation, helping him survive and take human form 210.
  • Treats Yuanbao with beast medicine that heals his wounds and restores him, while explaining that the same medicine is unsuitable for humans 220.
  • Carries fifth-rank spirit pills that she regards as failed-refining leftovers, although Southern Mei considers comparable pills irreplaceable treasures 338 339.
  • Gives Qianyun a potent unfinished pill that rapidly begins healing both his old and new wounds 419.
  • Is acknowledged by the Qilin and receives its accumulated power 504 525.
  • Absorption limit: The Qilin power initially causes severe pain and unconsciousness because her young body cannot bear it all at once. Liu Wan’s blood eases the danger, allowing gradual absorption; Yuanbao identifies a comparable outside power as a possible way to accelerate her awakening 503 504 507.

Spiritual Investigation and Learning

  • Enters Xia Qianlin’s sea of consciousness and discovers a sealed golden sword associated with his protection at birth 251.
  • Senses his connection to metal and suspects a relationship between the children’s destinies, the Five Elements Divine Pearls, and the World-Suppressing Tower she once guarded 251.
  • Plans to examine Zi Xing’s sea of consciousness as well 351.
  • Learns written characters at a glance and studies classical passages with Liu Wan. Although her mother worries that fear of abandonment drives excessive diligence, Wanwan privately also uses books to help herself sleep 472.
  • Works with the emperor and judicial officials to turn her public-welfare ideas into a formal proposal 251.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Black-jade dragon pendant — Delivered by the Crown Prince on behalf of an unnamed imperial elder. Later revealed to be one of two pendants made from Xia Siheng’s protective dark jade, which is described as warding off evil and calamity. His use of the Crown Prince as intermediary also helps discourage the Xie family from harming Wanwan 9 44 127.
  • Phoenix Hairpin — A gold hairpin given directly by the Empress Dowager. Wanwan tests it by biting it, then wonders why she leaves no tooth marks 15.
  • Gold, silver, and jade ornaments — Gifts presented by Xie Jin’an at the Love Evening Pavilion. Wanwan regards them as inferior to what the original story reserves for Huaishan 7.
  • Two bolts of Shu brocade — Rare fabric given by Xia Zhao; Wanwan remembers that it will later help expose the mistress as a thief 47.
  • Rejected gifts — The silver longevity lock engraved “Zhaodi” humiliates her mother; she later throws away and breaks the Old Madam’s gold-and-jade neck ring, considering it Huaishan’s leftovers 4 10.
  • Cosmic Bag — Storage for former-life resources, including talismans, medicines, and weapons. Wanwan retrieves an Explosive Talisman from it and repeatedly searches it for items suited to supernatural problems 92 179 220 457.
  • Begonia Jade Beads — Spiritual beads through which she channels combat power. Their depletion is implicated in her spiritual overdraft; purification and replenishment help revive her. She later gains control over them so they no longer drain her power 136 147 281.
  • Iron hammers — Small-looking but formidable weapons used against Huaishan, guards, and evil spirits 92 136 245.
  • Little shovel — A pink shovel retrieved from her Cosmic Bag, also described as an iron shovel. Serves as a lightning focus and direct weapon, including against Ci Mang and Shen Chuanlian 428 457 470 516.
  • Exorcism Talisman — Used to drive the attacking soul out of Xia Qianlin 75.
  • Explosive Talismans — Stored talismans that release destructive explosions. An enhanced version incorporates spiritual energy to damage a persistent divine soul 92 179.
  • Invisibility and teleportation talismans — Used during infiltration and escape at the Death Warrior Camp 416 419.
  • Paper crane — Left with the unconscious Pan Chun before Wanwan willingly accompanies her kidnappers 134.
  • Purple-Gold Gourds — Specially made ghost-trapping artifacts whose activation rules Wanwan manipulates. She later gives the two occupied gourds to the Eldest Princess as protective treasures 138 139.
  • Small wooden protective gourd — Given to Liu Wan with the invocation “Mommy mommy hum.” Protects against bad people and evil spirits and becomes a vital resource during the Divine Temple crisis 331 407.
  • Spirit pills and herbs — Includes a Third-Grade Elixir, beast medicine, fifth-rank spirit pills, and powerful unfinished pills. Wanwan’s assessment of their value is far lower than that of contemporary practitioners 210 220 339 419.
  • Brass Boat — Enlarged with a magical incantation and used to fly with Zi Xing and Daoist Qianyun toward Phoenix Mountain 415.
  • Stabby Sword — A hairpin-sized protective sword of Wanwan’s own design, given to Liu Wan. Attacks unwanted contact, reflects attacks, and stores a wisp of Wanwan’s spiritual power that later protects her mother’s heart meridians 457 525.
  • Peace-Blessing Pendant — Selected by Liu Wan and tied with a cord for Wanwan to wear around her neck 483.
