History
Foundation and early development
Louis obtains a 300-square-kilometer pioneering territory from Duke Edmund and names it Red Tide, honoring both the Calvin Family’s crimson crest and the homeland he cannot return to. Its fish migrations, geothermal resources, cold iron, and concealed demon marrow vein persuade him that it can become more than a place of exile 6.
To begin development, Louis negotiates for 120 untrained recruits, 30 craftsmen, 10 apprentice knights, and three full-fledged knights. Edmund also recommends purchasing slaves to supplement the workforce. Within the settlement’s early development, a hundred fishermen and local carpenters construct a makeshift dock and ten fishing boats over two weeks, enabling its first organized large-scale fishing operation 6 17.
Urbanization and consolidation
Greenhouses, heated housing, workshops, and an administrative center gradually transform the outpost into a city. Louis proposes additional settlements and an Immigration Dispatch Office when refugee resentment begins to threaten relations with existing residents. His Urbanization Plan prioritizes roads, drainage, heating, housing, and access to schools and clinics 244 258 268.
Red Tide’s expansion combines negotiated dependence with coercion. After exposing Viscount Zachariah’s Evil God worship, human sacrifices, and protection of Snow Oath remnants, it executes implicated noble families and absorbs their lands. Fear also drives innocent nobles to request territorial exchanges. Three months of consolidation incorporate 27 territories and approximately 64,000 people, joining most of Louis’s targeted lands into a contiguous domain. The original fief is formally renamed Red Tide City, while the surrounding territories retain the Red Tide Fief designation 308.
Rise of the Red Tide system
Louis extends Red Tide’s influence through coordinated food supplies, trade, education, military support, and reconstruction. By the time of his northern inspection tour, the southeastern Frontier operates as a complementary Red Tide Economic Sphere, with Red Tide City directing production and distribution. Participating nobles gain reliable income but surrender much of their practical independence 352 357.
Red Tide also becomes economically distinct from the Calvin Family. Louis quietly incorporates 80 percent of the key personnel in the family trading company’s Northern Frontier branch into his system, while major northern commodities increasingly circulate through Red Tide accounts 374.
At the system’s first-year review, 54 of roughly 160 Northern Frontier fiefs are fully integrated. Other territories participate through voluntary admission, disaster-relief arrangements, or dependence on Red Tide-controlled trade routes. Its leadership now functions as the Frontier’s effective central authority 385.
Southern expansion and reconstruction
Red Tide’s mechanized army annihilates the Seventeenth Legion at Frost Glaive City, then exploits Duke Raymont’s absence to invade Greyrock Province. By the capture of Black Iron Territory, it has already quietly seized a quarter of the province 400 411.
Six months after taking Greyrock, Red Tide has integrated approximately 700,000 residents, 48 mining districts, and three glacial rivers into a centralized administration. Louis entrusts the province to Green after reconstruction ends deaths from starvation and exposure and expands local mining, manufacturing, and food production 433.
Over the following three years, Red Tide consolidates rather than expands. Ports, roads, warehouses, and five railway lines support trade, while its administrative system increasingly operates without Louis’s daily supervision 441.
Later campaigns and the dragon threat
A major military parade precedes Red Tide’s southward campaign against the Holy See. Louis presents the offensive as revenge for Duke Calvin’s death and liberation of the Southeast, although the campaign also serves territorial annexation. Red Tide subsequently encircles the Holy Eastern Empire’s capital and breaches the Golden Feather Flower Theocracy’s maritime defenses 455 456 461.
The emergence of metal-attracting dragons exposes a weakness in Red Tide’s industrial forces. Louis orders armor changes, civilian evacuations, workshop shutdowns, and alchemical countermeasures. When August attacks the Southeast, Lambert’s forces injure him with a trap exploiting his attraction field, but his retaliation devastates the defensive line. Most troops retreat while fewer than a hundred elite knights remain with Lambert; Louis arrives before August can kill him 470 475.
Geography and Resources
| Resource or condition | Importance |
|---|---|
| Severe northern climate | Spring arrives late, with lingering frost and snow. Heating and protected cultivation are central to settlement planning 244 258. |
| Seasonal fish migrations | Support organized river fishing and food production; the first major operation uses boats, seine nets, shore nets, harpoons, and traps 6 17. |
| Geothermal vents and hot springs | Provide warmth and support cold-resistant crops, greenhouses, and geothermal housing systems 6 244 303. |
| Cold iron | Common in the founding territory; later used for reinforced gates and armored military equipment 6 285 303. |
| Demon marrow | A concealed vein is identified at foundation. Louis recognizes its potential for explosive weapons but initially lacks the means to mine it 6. |
| Frostblood Redberries | Cultivated near residual hot-spring warmth. Their concentrated magic strengthens battle aura and assists Bloodline Knight breakthroughs 166. |
| Shadow Moss and Soul-Eater Lizard Beasts | Recovered from an ancient tomb in northern Wheatwave Fief and developed into sustainable training and psychological-warfare resources 258 274. |
| Magical Beasts | Kept for explosive ingredients, heavy transport, and knight-enhancing resources. Snowfield moss is designated a military resource to support their growth and breeding 336. |
City Layout and Landmarks
| Location | Description and function |
|---|---|
| Administrative Center / Council Hall | Government headquarters containing household registers, tax ledgers, decrees, maps, and blueprints. Its vaulted hall uses cold iron supports and hanging Red Tide banners rather than ornate decoration 303 385 391. |
| Red Tide Castle | Louis’s residence. The earlier Tulou castle is considered practical but insufficiently prestigious; a later main castle has seamless-looking walls, four towers, copper domes, and warm, dry interiors 268 394. |
| Central residential district | The first district renovated, recognizing the former slaves, refugees, and natives who built the settlement’s foundations 268. |
| Red Tide Domed Houses | Uniform rounded homes with insulation and heating. Later communities use dark-red and deep-gray domes, partially sunken foundations, geothermal piping, shared wells, storerooms, and assembly squares 268 303. |
| Greenhouse district | Semicircular timber-framed greenhouses coated with lightstone film, built near geothermal steam. Greenhouse cultivation and spell-controlled conditions support early harvests 244 258. |
| Artisans’ / industrial district | Organized production area overseen by Chief Artisan Mike; hosts the Artisan Management Group’s weapons-development discussions 268. |
| Fierce Tide Plaza | Planned for civic and military gatherings; later hosts a large bonfire celebration attended by residents from across the city 268 378. |
| Recreation Plaza and Market Plaza | Planned respectively near schools and the theater, and near commercial districts 268. |
| City gates and walls | Eastern and western gates receive ironwood and cold iron reinforcement. Their upgraded construction can withstand two bombardments from Large Demon Explosive Bombs 303. |
| Dawnlight Harbor | Red Tide’s first coastal-city project, incorporating warehouses, workshops, housing, markets, and shipbuilding facilities rather than serving only as a port 333 439. |
- Street infrastructure: Heated stone roads, drainage, hardy trees, and clean streets distinguish the city to arriving visitors 268 301.
- Refugee longhouses: Communal shelters include heating, kitchens, wells, and medical stations while permanent housing expands 303.
- Public health: Improved residential sanitation prevents infectious disease in the renovated district from the preceding winter onward 268.
Government and Law
Central administration
Louis proposes seven specialized offices, measurable performance standards, and evidence-based five-year plans. Centrally appointed local officials must submit monthly and quarterly reports, while inspections and a directly controlled, rotating Inspectorate monitor corruption and neglect 304.
| Office | Assigned responsibilities |
|---|---|
| Agriculture | Farming, food production, and storage; performance is judged by the ability to feed more people 304. |
| Craftsmen | Workshops, weapons, tools, construction, repairs, and technical innovation 304. |
| Trade | Commerce, market taxes, supply movement, roads, caravans, and waystations 304. |
| Education | Schooling, training, and the cultivation of administrative talent 304. |
| Defense | Specialized military administration within the centralized government 304. |
| Civil Affairs | Specialized civil administration within the centralized government 304. |
| Health | Medical services, including stations and mobile clinics 304 385. |
Authority and enforcement
- Noble restrictions: The Snowpeak Reconstruction Pact requires nobles within Red Tide to obey its edicts, surrender private military and administrative interference, and cooperate with reconstruction. Defiance is punishable as rebellion 239.
- Territorial oversight: Incorporated territories receive resident officials, civilian and knight administration, and inspection teams subordinate to Erin 308.
- Anti-corruption work: The Inspectorate opens 71 cases during the system’s first-year review, including theft of relief supplies, illegal taxation, and Evil God worship 385.
- Local participation: Erin proposes trial town councils with limited commoner participation; Louis also views them as a means to identify capable or potentially threatening individuals 308.
- Unequal early justice: Zachariah’s trial permits no defense, public attendance, or pardon, and his entire family is executed, including children 308.
- Later legal practice: Greyrock adopts posted laws, public oversight, and trials of hundreds of former officials. A visiting former imperial official witnesses a knight compensate a farmer for damage to a field 433 435.
Population and Civic Life
Refugee reception and labor
- Registration: Newcomers are documented by name, origin, relatives, health, and other details, then assigned care or work according to their circumstances 301.
- Priority assistance: Women and children receive sheltered accommodation and centrally supplied food; able-bodied adults enter construction crews 301.
- Skilled placements: Blacksmiths, carpenters, apothecaries, and leatherworkers receive priority workshop or military-supply assignments in exchange for food and lodging 301.
- Household contracts: Registered subjects receive protection, reasonable taxation, education, and opportunities to purchase freedom. Contracts also bind them to Red Tide’s institutions 303.

- Youth Corps: Imperial and Barbarian trainees learn together under Bruch, with emphasis on technique, formations, obedience, and responsibility for comrades 342.
- Merit-based careers: Former refugees and orphans can become knights and commanders; Mia and Gray are documented examples 419 455.
Celebrations and identity
- Red Tide Games: Temporary sports grounds host tug-of-war, relay races, stone throwing, and a firewood relay, followed by knight exhibitions and a controlled Magical Beast fight 140.
- Public loyalty: Flags, school stories, bard performances, and relief ceremonies associate Red Tide with warmth, food, education, and security 357 378 385.
- Approachable patrols: Residents greet knights without fear; Mary observes a patrol knight helping a refugee and recognizes the soldiers as civic protectors 301.
Economy and Industry
Red Tide Economic Sphere
The economic system coordinates formerly competing fiefs through shared resources, centralized accounts, transport networks, and complementary production 357.
| Regional component | Function |
|---|---|
| Northern mining districts | Supply raw materials 357. |
| Eastern plains | Supply grain and livestock products 357. |
| Southern workshops | Manufacture and process goods 357. |
| Red Tide City | Directs allocation, distribution, and accounting 357. |
- Trade instruments: Participating territories use Red Tide Vouchers or voucher tokens in place of gold coins for trade within the system 357.
- Political leverage: Grain discounts favor allies; unaffiliated nobles receive no special rates. Agricultural assistance is tied to contracts, inspections, and standardized storage 371.
- Agricultural scale: An autumn harvest reaches approximately 340,000 tonnes, with reserves sufficient for three years across the Northern Frontier 371.
- Manufacturing: Hamilton’s steam-powered Loom Model One leads to Red Tide’s first textile mill, managed by Heaton 340 342.
- Commercial goods: Northern resources, weapons, fabrics, furs, and Red Tide glass products reach external markets 372 390.
- Transport results: At the first-year system review, major trade routes have increased from seven to twenty-one, taxes have fallen by 30 percent, and goods move at nearly twice the previous year’s speed 385.
- External trade: Red Tide seeks joint commerce with the Harvey Family and mineral trade with the Jade Federation; later it sells equipment to the Empire and materials to the Federation simultaneously 375 441.
- Specialist recruitment: More than a hundred specialists from the southern provinces join Red Tide, strengthening its institutions while weakening those of the old Empire 439.
Military and Research
Knight development
| Development | Chapter | Results and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Founding knight contingent | 6 | Ten apprentice knights and three full-fledged knights supplied by Edmund; they obey Louis while remaining loyal to the Northern Frontier. |
| Spirit Forge trials | 274 | Seven knights reach Elite rank; three are attempting Transcendent breakthroughs. Twelve can train simultaneously, potentially twenty with greater potion supplies. |
| Projected Spirit Forge output | 274 | Estimated thirty to thirty-five new Elite Knights in three months; this is a forecast, not a completed result. |
| Established breakthrough procedure | 346 | Shadow Moss fumigation, a honey–redberry catalyst, and Tide Breathing Technique guidance form a three-stage process. |
| Young Transcendent formation | 456 | More than three hundred young Transcendent Knights appear in the military parade. |
Strategic facilities and inventions
- Shadow Trial Ground: A concealed ancient tomb renovated into the Spirit Forge’s central base. It contains moss cultivation, lizard-beast breeding, psychological-weapons research, and a Will-Breakthrough Altar 274.
- Shadow Moss catalysts: Improve concentration and battle aura circulation; excessive concentration risks hallucination. Louis sets 1.3 as the mass-production standard 274.
- Demon explosives: Progress to high-explosive shells using compressed magical-beast crystals and demon energy. Advanced stabilization designs require consultation with Magewood Archmages 329.
- Psychological weapons: Mental Shock Bombs and Frostbite Soul-Shaker Bombs disrupt enemy minds and formations; the latter counter the Sorrowflame Vine Court’s rage link 274 285.
- Alchemy Workshop: Merian develops medical agents, interrogation compounds, and beast-calming treatments. Louis orders medical mass production and restricts harmful interrogation agents through authorization and oversight 353.
- Beast Corps: Successful white-bear taming leads to the Red Tide Beast Corps and its first White Bear Knight Order 371.
Armed forces
- Army strength: Lambert reports 8,650 troops, including 5,000 former soldiers of Duke Edmund 389.
- Combined arms: Knights operate alongside armored wagons, steam war vehicles, artillery, explosives, flamethrowers, demolition units, and mobile support troops 285 389 400.
- Mass-produced firepower: The later army fields rifles, machine guns, rocket launchers, steam tanks, engineering vehicles, and organized logistics columns 456.
- Naval forces: Dawnlight ironclads establish Red Tide’s maritime strength; later steel warships defeat controlled pirate fleets and the Theocracy’s regenerating bone ships 348 447 461.
- Specialist protection: Frostleaf Type III Gas Masks protect knights against the Theocracy’s mentally corrosive environments 463.
- Civilian conduct: Soldiers are forbidden to steal from or mistreat civilians. Occupation and relief units provide food, medicine, quarantine, sanitation, and reconstruction 389 411 419 460.
- Limitations: Fishmen can clog warship propellers with their bodies, while dragon attraction abilities can lift and crush metal vehicles. Industrial superiority does not eliminate supernatural vulnerabilities 447 475.
